Zero Punctuation: SimCity

Hilariously scathing, as usual. Seriously, anyone thinking EA doesn't care about the players anymore?

Also, I got a real kick out of the credits sequence this week.

In my opinion keeping the Sims import feature would be a great way to show off how individual sims in your city have their own lives with their own jobs and houses and how they go to movies and other crap. I wonder why they decided to remove it?

This one was less of a review of Simcity and more an comprehensive argument for why EA are shit.

EXCELLENT

And...they're using that advert that screws up the video. Great work, guys.

He keeps teasing us with that FTL review he didn't do.

Bad Jim:

Actually their stock price hit its nadir last august and has been rising since. It's still no higher than it was after the 2008 crash though. There is hope that with John Riccitiello gone we may see a smarter CEO in charge. Completely abandoning DRM is too much to hope for but maybe they'll think twice about gutting the core game in order to implement it.

Well, I was going by news that EA stock prices had ended up falling another cumulative 8% or so, given news of a slide after Riccitiello left.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-03-20-ea-stock-plummets-as-markets-reassess-riccitiello-departure

Of course, take the news with more than a few grains of salt, but reporting the most marked loss of over a year and a half is not likely to make shareholders happy with the effects of a year's time and several big title launches effectively being nil, considering EA's reporting stock prices being not far off from what they were a year ago.

Finally, on the point of DRM, there's this statement made by EA the day of this ZP release, which comes off as either covering their tracks and/or bases, more PR spin, or morbidly amusing, depending on how you want to view it.

SimCity

This week, Zero Punctuation reviews SimCity.

Wow. I like how you blame EA for the way the game is set up. Maxis made the game, they are the ones for the DRM stuff. EA just handled the funding. No reason to get mad at them.

And who do you think vehemently demanded the always on DRM be included?

EA did. But the multiplayer designed came from the people at Maxis. EA just doesn't want more pirates stealing from them. Would you like it if someone stole from you? Maybe DRM wouldn't happen if people in the community controlled themselves and just bought them. There's no reason to complain if your the one causing the problem.

Microsoft please note that if you think having a console with DRM will work please let this train wreck teach you otherwise now if only we had a simcity senario to so them that the kinect is a bad idea.

That being said, he does amazing FTL poetry!

I haven't played a SimCity game in years...

Maybe I should get 4, since that's widely considered as one of the best?

You'll hear from a lot of old-school SimCity players that say 2/3000 was the pinnacle of the series, but I don't quite understand why. SC4 did everything those games did better and did it's own things well too.

SC4 still has an active modding community, and still manages to look pretty good (minus the silly portraits of the advisers). A big complaint is that it's pretty hard, which it is at first.

I'll explain why.

I don't recall zones refusing to populate unless a road was on a specific side of them in SimCity 2000, the best SimCity.

I do recall this happening in 4.

And you had no control over which side the the zone wanted its road on.

And if that fucked up your plan, well that's just too damn bad.

Fuck you, SimCity 4.

I hate you.

And your retarded arrows, too.

Well yeah, but you have to consider the fact most if not all pirates I knew wouldn't have bought the game anyways. Heck I used to pirate back in high school when I didn't have much money to buy games, but even then if I liked the game I actually bought it when I could. I don't pirate now, but then again I don't buy a lot of new games either. A part of that is BS like this. I feel exactly the same as Yahtzee about merely installing Origin on my computer just because I've been so disgusted with EA's customer service. So, why should they continue to be jerks and punish the PAYING customers? All this does is give people an incentive to pirate because what extra benefit do they get for actually paying for it? I believe it's a matter of attitude. The company needs to accept there will be pirates and try to find ways to be more consumer friendly, not the other way around. In the end they will just alienate their consumer base and demonize themselves. Fault is a two way street.

Punish paying customers? I got a free $40 dollar game because they accepted they did wrong from launch day. Also companies wouldn't put guidelines for anti-piracy if they wasn't none! As I said, back in the 1600s merchant ships had to carry less supplies and more guns because of pirates. Settlements starved and towns became abandoned or dried up because of the lack of food. Pirates are nothing but lazy jackasses that detriment the community and society.

a poo map...now that's innovation

all we need now is a minecraft sequel where we can build plumbing systems :P

Haha! Great video, so true.

Now that I've had a chance to look around, I think I'd better say something before somebody else does.

Hey, buddy? I think that on here...you are the vocal minority. Can't say for sure about other places, 'cause I don't go there, but I would hazard a GUESS that there are alot of unhappy people who aren't just a hate crowd. They're the torches-and-pitchforks crowd with a burning effigy and some grenade launchers. They're not being 'smug'. They're getting ready to lynch some people hardcore for being assholes. And by assholes, I don't mean the REAL vocal minority, which are those who might defend the assholes for...whatever reason.

Your position...makes you sound like you just want to be disagreeable to screw around with 'em, not necessarily because you believe in the other side. I mean, honestly, what kind of reason is that? Because you thought people were smug. Does the irony of your actions here not strike you as funny even? Well, this may come as a big shock to you, but sometimes it doesn't matter what others think about the hammer's ability to hit the nail on the head. THEY GOT IT. The game is terrible, the developer's a handpuppet, the company has no legs to stand on, and you're arguing the point on a board that hates them.

This is the part where you just live and let live, not comment. It doesn't help to linger and debate in the Valley of Snark.

You're right, to a degree, but you can't really compare the pirates who torrent games to pirates who board ships shoot people and steal supplies and luxuries both. No lives are lost, no one loses vital life sustaining resources. Besides, my original point was that most pirates probably were not going to buy the game anyways. Unlike the old time pirates who were true parasitics and just lived off of stealing food and luxuries from others. These guys now don't live off of stealing video games. It isn't moral and people shouldn't do it all the same, but there are enough selfish pricks who will and that's something game companies need to realize. Considering that most the people (in my experience) who steal games wouldn't have even bought them in the first place, so where are the lost dollars? Not that huge of a percent, so it really isn't a problem worth nuking. Make it hard to steal but don't make your customers go through extra hoops as a result. I'm glad you were reimbursed, I hope lots of people were and EA's big wigs will learn from this whole thing. Plus, I hope they learn not everyone ogles online features...

Extruding Arseholes, ahhhah oh man I can't breathe...

Best video in a while, but then I haven't watched any for awhile since I tend to wait till I've actually played the game before watching the corresponding ZP. I didn't mind the fact that Maxxis wanted more multiplayer interaction with the regions and stuff, but I still find it surprising the extent to which it's forced on. I mean I loved building a whole region of my own with neighboring cities, what if I don't want to link up with someone else. And terraforming to meet the different needs was excellent, why would they take that out, it's only the boundaries that need to match up.

Anyways, last sim game I tried (Sim City Societies) was also a train wreck, I'm quite sad to see this franchise go into the ground, for me at least.

I wonder how yahtzee decides when to use an imp as a representation of a woman and when to draw a zero punctuation type woman.

Actually Origin is fairly inoffensive. SimCity on the other hand, is absolutely horrible.

Although I did get a free copy of Mass Effect 3 from EA, so not all bad.

not letting any of ea's filth any where near my pc, you can keep your games and I'll keep my money guys cheers <3

I'm just happy of the universal consensus that EA is evil and deserving of an enema.

hahahahaha

My favourite ZP in a while. Well done, Yahtzee!
Because everyone loves hating on EA. Though I still remember their glory days (around the time that all their logos whispered "challenge everything" at the end) or even earlier, when their logo was just a square, circle, and triangle.
But I loved the whole depiction of Origin in the first minute of the video. Bravo indeed.

"THY TOWN HATH TOO MANY BLACKS

Just as funny? Still love the show, but you went a bit far with this one Yahtzee Croshaw.

well I'm not white so sooner or later (sooner) there will be jokes coming in at my racial expense.

I could be offended by it, but I really don't have the time for it...

The joke in question wasnt made at your "racial expense" in the video. I was merely using it as an example of how homophobic jokes or comments are more acceptable in media than racist ones. If the joke in question was about a city being assaulted by the hand of God because it had too many Blacks, Asians, Jews or whatever. There would be an out cry to have the video removed or altered. I know Yahtzee Croshaw isnt some gaybashing maniac, but the joke was made in bad taste.
