Movie Trailers: Elysium - Official Trailer

Elysium - Official Trailer

The director of District 9 puts you in the middle of a interstellar class war.

Meh, it could be entertaining, but on a lot of levels it looks like someone did a movie based around half the concept of "Gunnm" or "Battle Angel Alita" in the US (I've read both the Manga, and seen the Anime which didn't do it justice). I almost expected them to start making some crack about Zalem during all of that. Of course the lack of actual cybertech means that it's doubtlessly missing the twists and the rest of the points that one made.

That said, I'm pretty much a poor slob, forced to live on social security due to brain damage. I'm exactly the kind of guy whose supposed to empathize with a movie like this, but going by the trailer and it's rather heavy-handed point, I must say that as entertaining as I might find it I'm never likely to agree with the central message it's selling. I have no real problem with a minority of people enjoying the fruits of their success, and the benefits that come with it, even when there are poor people out there who have less than nothing. If I won the lottery (unlikely since I don't typically play it unless there is an unusually huge jackpot) I'd probably move someplace nice like Hawaii, which I guess is the real life version of "Elysium" and enjoy myself with my money and wouldn't feel especially guilty about it. Someone who earned that money or inherited it from someone who did (I believe in providing for one's family, and the family sharing in one's success, as family is one of the motives for pursueing it) has even more of a right to be there than someone who got there from dumb luck.

In short I'm not a communist, or a socialist to that extent, and to be fair on some levels this movie, and to a lesser extent the beginnings of "Gunnm" smacked almost of Khymer Rogue propaganda, where the big enemy and victim of torturous genocide were the "city dwellers" who were portrayed as being much like the elite of Elishium or Zalem. Fiction from more developed companies tend to draw a line between ghettos with extreme urban blight and nice, developed areas, though it winds up in the same place as "farmers and those in rural areas are entitles to torture and murder those in the cities with more than they have and take their stuff".

Just some thoughts looking at the trailer and blurb about it being a class war. It also makes me think that a big budget Gunnm movie ( I wouldn't be surprised if Japan did a "B" movie version at some point) might be cool, especially given the way the reveals kind of subvert the initial message (though not entirely). :)

I thought that as well. James Cameron was supposed to do a CGI Battle Angel movie, but it keeps getting pushed back by all his other projects.

So this is Iron Man 2099 basically. Should be fun to watch.

Wow, did anyone see this trailer and *NOT* go 'ooh, Zalem/Tiphares!'

So it's Battle Angel Alita, but instead of a spunky cyborg girl we get Matt Damon in a silly looking robot suit.

Looks like it could be good. I'll probably go see it.

I'd rather watch the cyborg girl. I also think that if we see one or more characters who are exiles from "Elysium" who're working to get revenge on their former place of residence then we can safely write this movie off as having exactly zero original ideas.

Looks great! I'd love to see another sci-fi film from Neil Blomkamp.

But...

A story about a world where a privileged elite live on a sky paradise called Elysium hovering over a junkyard world where the rest of the population live in squalor? Is it just me, or does this sound like a non-comedic adaptation of Deponia?

Was that a flying Bugatti in the 2:00 minute mark?

People who fail physics, engineering, psychology, economics, and ####ing geography this badly should not be allowed to make movies.
1) You can only build something like that in orbit if you hae endless cheap energy.
2) If you have endless cheap energy, you will never again have a water shortage. You can also easily fix the climate.
3) People living in 'third world conditions' do not fight for everyone in the world. They just don't have the energy.
4) How the hell are the people up above in any way rich if they don't sell their kit to the people down below?!
5) There is more than one country in the world. It would only take one nation to nuke that orbital out of the sky.

Unless there's some kind of twist ending that the Elysiums have been trying to help Earth for decades, but keep failing because almost everyone down below are dumb arse luddites who ignore good advice and hate science because their leaders tell them so (you know, kinda like parts of Africa, and parts of America) this is going to be a really sucky movie.

A really pretty one, but still also a really sucky one.

Dude, there is a reason this is a science fiction movie, because like most science fiction movies it explores those "what if?" questions by creating an hypothetical world. Most of the time what matters is exploring the humanity of people in those hypothetically extreme conditions, like Blade Runner and District 9 for example.

This movie can still suck but that judgement should only come after actually watching the movie.

Reminded me of District 9, then it said "from the makers of District 9"

Then it reminded me of this short I saw a long time ago [link], then I saw that it was also from Neill Blomkamp.

I don't know what it means, but I will be cautiously optimistic.

I did really enjoy district 9. I think i'll give this movie the benefit of my doubt and just hope it can deliver an experience worth at the very least comparing to district 9.

I loved District 9, I'll probably at least like this. Though I almost stopped watching immediately, because I'm really sick of BWAAAAH... BWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAHHH...

1-2) I'm assuming the rich space-dwellers do have vast energy/technological resources, they just choose not to share them with anyone else (or they have just enough for all of them to live in the lap of luxury on their space station, and refuse to risk giving up any of their privileges).
3) I got the impression from a synopsis that the hero wanted to get access to Elysium's medical technology to save his own life, not that he necessarily set out to save the world. Similarly with the other rebels/freedom fighters/whatever, they may just want a better deal for themselves or their families/country/ethnic group.
4) Presumably they're materially wealthy in the sense of having access to just about anything they want (including super-medicine), effectively a post-scarcity society for a small group of people.
5) Presumably Elysium has technology so far ahead of the rest of the world it can defend itself from anything that anyone on the messed-up Earth can do.

The best thing I can say from the looks of the trailer is this: "Because of the tone the trailer set, I don't think it will be another generic action movie." Since I've never seen Gunnm or Battle Angel Alita like most of the other commenters here, I can't really add anything else.

Can we just let him make the Halo movie already?

He's proven time and again that he can get the tone and the aesthetic right, hell check out Landfall and see what he has already done.

Yes I know that there are those who might say that a Halo movie isn't a good idea for whateveer reason. But I think that not only would it be commercially successful it would be well written, visually amazing and dramatic as hell.

Couldn't we all do with a major game movie franchise that doesn't suck AND doesn't have a limited theatrical release.

Blomkamp is an amazing director but I will always see his movies and think "Why do we not have a Halo movie yet?".

As a quick two cents, I got the feeling this was basically a mash up of District 9...and In Time.

...The Trash-O-Meter is at Defcon 5.

So...another movie I'd have to shut my brain down to enjoy?

I'm getting sick of that requirement becoming mandatory in cinema.

Y'know, I'm by no means a "have" but by the looks of things, this film's solution to wealth disparity is to blow up all the rich people's stuff so that no-one gets to have it.

Yeah, sure, that'll help...

Captcha: Oh Brother.

Well it seems like the site itself agrees with me.

Or blow up all the rich folks and STEAL their stuff? Who said they had to nuke the ring? :D

Just going from what I'm seeing here, and from what I'm seeing, they're not leaving much intact enough to steal.

This is what I have to watch instead of Battle Angel Alita? I mean I loves me some Matt Damon and Jodie Foster but dammit: I WANT THE BATTLE ANGEL ALITA MOVIE!!! Or the fucking Astro Boy sequel someone said we were gonna get. Or you know how about either the Fatal Frame film or American McGee's Alice feature film?! WHERE ARE THE MOVIES I HAVE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR?!?!?!?
