I am pleased to hear that it is good. Hopefully I'll be able to find time to pick up my pre-order tomorrow. "Sigh" I'm not going to say that people are wrong to complain about the pre-order DLC, but it just feels wrong that so many people are not going to buy the game and the developer could suffer financially over something that apparently got carried over by THQ's decision and really doesn't feel too big compared so some of the other things that, say, EA does.

Couldn't people just buy the game but not buy the DLC? That would still send a message. It wouldn't be as loud of a message but...God the world really isn't fair sometimes.

I think it's great that this game has made so much progress considering how buggy the last game was, at least when I played it.

However, I have to call this game out on the pre-order shenanigans.
Seriously, what the hell?!

No way in hell I am paying 5 bucks for Hardcore mode.

If you can't be bothered to play the 8-hour game, I'm not going to assume you're willing to read the entire novel that it's based on, that's all ;)

On the topic of length, how long was the campaign of Last Light?

Well, this convinced me to buy the game. I was going to put it off until it was cheaper but I want to support these developers as they are probably our only hope at getting S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 at this point.

This is nothing against the review or the article itself, but having found no other forum to post this in, I must say:

The web code used for the Galleries in any article is complete crap. On multiple web browsers, the picture appears full-sized and runs off the right margin, with other content in front of it. Clicking on the picture presents it in a window that reduces the size, and doesn't even allow one to scroll through other pictures in the gallery, meaning that a viewer must open up each and every picture individually.

Again, nothing against you Mike (great article BTW :)), but perhaps you can pass on to the web team at The Escapist that they should use some gallery code that's less than half a decade old, especially after the much-touted recent revamp of the site.

That was going to be my question, actually - are these games at all like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games? I'd love to have a new game with that same vibe, and would gladly get the first one if it is.

The post-Apocalypse in Russia setting is the only similarity this game has to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I am afraid. It is completely linear in term of levels and you only get the opportunity to get new gear maybe four times and there are about ten guns.

Awww, nuts- that's too bad. I might still try this, but I really liked the sandboxy freedom that S.T.A.L.K.E.R gave us.

If it's any consolation, 4A is made up of a handful of folks who left before Shadow of Chernobyl was released. Though it isn't sandboxy, it's the current king of that distinctly Eastern European post-apocalyptic survival feel.

Yeah while the gameplay might be different Metro 2033 comes about as close in atmosphere to STALKER as anyone has any right to hope for. You're already interested but here's another wee nudge. Play Metro! It has its issues but is a damned fine game. That recommendation always comes with the addendum that you will know rage near the end when you hear of amoebas. Shoot the spawners.

Looks pretty amazing. I might pick this up once I get some scratch.

Should I pick up the previous installment as well or just read a quick plot summary?

Aptspire:

It's my understanding that is isn't. It's true that there's a sequel to the Metro 2033 book, with the excessively imaginative name Metro 2034, but Last Light isn't based on that in the same way as the first in the series was.

Dont care. Will rent it. PLay it. An send it back. The hardcore mode isnt an issue. Its an issue for people who doesn't buy new. I play it because i like the story, like the last game, i like the story.

This x 9001! Seriously, what the hell is up with that..!?

I'm a huge Metro fan, and I've been waiting for this for quite some time now, but I too will not stand for this bullshit! I do not encourage pirating at ALL, but it's like Joe in the video said, it's things like this that will get a lot of people to pirate it. Personally I'm not going to play this at all, I think it's absolutely appalling what they're pulling off here

As someone who pre-ordered this before seeing reviews this is a big BIG relief. WHEEW!

Never really played the first one so I can't see myself jumping into the second along with the creator slagging on the U so not really going to dive into this anytime soon.

To bad I have to wait till friday, bloody European release dates always 3 days behind USA's release date =w=

I haven't read the sequel (I want to play the game first) but Metro 2033 novel was pretty great. The translation isn't the best, but you can tell the author is a very competent, talented writer with a knack for analyzing the modern world. He takes the extremes of mysticism, science, politics, culture, etc. and develops them into a microcosm of a world where every extremity exists. It's pretty great.

That being said, there is almost NO action. Or perhaps I should say, there's almost no gun fire. I'm not sure I can recall Artyom shooting his gun once in the entire book. There isn't even a lot of sneaking - he either gets lucky or intuitively finds a way through checkpoints and the like.

Which is why I prefer to play the game first. I personally like to combine the two stories into one narrative, thinking of how a hybridized version would play out.

It's certainly worth the read.

DO NOT BUY THE PROLOUGE/PREQUEL! It is a complete sham and there is not ONE word that adds any new detail you won't learn in the first few chapters of the game.

In Metro 2033, I got stock because I didn't have enough gas mask filters. It was very upsetting because I looked all over the place for them - throughout the ENTIRE game I looked for them, not just at parts when I knew they were coming up. At any rate, I got stuck and would have to restart the entire game if I wanted to "fix" the problem. Is this also a possibility in Metro Last Light, or should I not be concerned?

Metro 2033 was BRUTAL, but I still loved it xD

for some reason, the ambiance was enough; it just felt so driven

I tried Stalker for an hour, and couldn't handle it for some reason. It felt really bumpy shoddy. Maybe I wasn't playing it the right way?, because I heard a lot of good things about it.

i dint really like the first game and i highly doubt i will get this one either. and yes, what joe says is a reason as well not to get it.

I literally just finished the first one for the first time. I thought it was entertaining, but a lot of the selling/trading system was a bit annoying (unable to sell a gun...really?). I still enjoyed it enough to decide to pick up the new one. I'm really glad to hear they tie up a lot of the loose ends since the ending of the first one left a lot to be desired.

I've been having high hopes that this game would turn out well and 'lo and behold that it didn't disappoint, according to most reviews thus far (84% on metacritic).

Really happy this game is good and I can't wait to get my hands on it in the next few days and start playing it.

So are you saying that you are alright with game companies removing CORE FEATURES of the game to sell you as DLC?

You do know that the Ranger mode DLC was promised by THQ and Deep Silver inherited it when they bought the rights to Metro, because retailers had been promised it already, therefore they couldn't back out? Basically, Deep Silver and 4A inherited THQ's blunder. Not to mention that this really isn't new. Ranger Mode was added after the original 2033 was released for 3 bucks on the 360 and for free on steam, so I hesitate to call it a core part of the game.

Just saying, devil's advocate.

*pokes head around corner*
so, it's good then?

To the Steam Mobile!

I don't get how a so badly optimized game can get 4.5 stars. Seriously, this runs worse than Crysis 1 on release.
The game is awful from a technical standpoint and it simply can't be "near perfect". And please stop telling people to pre order games. The review just sounds less professional.

What you are saying is just not true :P . Works well on High DX11 settings on an ATI HD 5770. Just turn of PhysX. It should have been turned off by default... apart from that it runs extremely well.

I personally find that it runs quite well. SSAA is a real hog so try turning that off. It doesn't really make a visual difference and really bumps up the FPS.

Based on the drawback outlined at the end, I'll wait until Last Light is on sale.

It would have been a day one purchase if I had beaten Metro 2033... unfortunately, a game-breaking bug (new filters would always be as depleted as the one removed before it) prevented me from doing so. Three times.

I'm sure this'll appear in the summer sale.

I should probably play this o.O
