Another quality review. Well-placed jibing at the Japanese fixation for surreal physics and angst-ridden hermaphrodites, balanced out by some excellent criticism of botched user interactivity and overly-lengthy gameplay retread. The obligatory penis joke was well-inserted and your deliver was solid (puns not intended). I can see where your sequel issues arise from, but I think you can give at least some leeway to the developers who are desperate to capitalize off of their idea and make lightning strike twice.

Even so, though, The Amber Spyglass was a stinking piece of poo compared to the Golden Compass.

Hilarious review, can't believe he didn't complain about the music though. I like DMC4 but it is what it is, a game mostly built on combat and style. Everything he said was right though, especially the red and green gummy bears. That made my day.

lol i find it funny he hates on games that i love so much ( devil may cry 4 , bioshock ) but i never get pissed off at him and thats what makes yahtzee so awsome.

but nero wasn't that bad to compare to raiden in mgs ( raiden pissed me off but nero diden't so much )

Very awesome.

Totally overshadowed by the fact that after slating it for four and a half minutes, I'm treated to an advertisement meant to encourage me to purchase it.
More awesome than a midget riding a liger.

I loved this review and fully sympathize. I lament how Devil May Cry has been treated after they got the genius idea that sequels were a good thing.

LOL The MGS 2 was right on the money. Although i thought the game was fun the Main char was a girl lol.

Series where at least some of the sequels were better than at least some of the earlier games in the series:

Civilization
Grand Theft Auto
Half-Life
Heroes of Might and Magic
Might and Magic
Team Fortress
Ultima
Wizardry

For extra fun, add your own. The rule about film sequels sucking more than the originals doesn't apply to computer games.

I had that bar experience happen to me once, except it wasn't with Strongbow, but rather with Miller Genuine Draft. Lets just say they're no longer my friend.

Also, hilarious review.

I take exception to the His Dark Materials reference.

Fun stuff though, even though most of the issues have become 'hallmarks' of DMC since the first game.

Wellllllllll...Just because it played utterly to my tastes doesnt mean it was an example of good writing. The plot really zipped around, lost all proportion, and things got really, really weird in short otder. It simply wasnt as good as the other two, despite my personal philosophical feelings; I can still remain objective enough to see a less-good book.

What was that sequel icon with the big eye? I didnt recognize that one.

so when can we expect to buy a ZP DVD, full of episodes, extras, art etc? id buy that shit, much better than just archiving the FLVs

Speaking of putting a wasp next to a spider, here's another Japanese pastime that makes me say WTF?

No Slipknot though. Or Gummi Bears.

I liked the way it started by I feel like the review got a little long winded. You'd basically nailed the game and were done and I felt you kept it going for a bit too long. When you went into other sequels that destroyed franchises I felt like the skit was over and you should have cut it just before that.

Just my opinion, otherwise loved it.

Likewise, I hope it was just a random inclusion

LOL hard at the Yaoi jab there.

~From a Yaoi Fan. ^_^

Thank you for reviewing DMC4 (Playing this next, after Gyakuten Saiban 4) ZP!

Yeah, combat (and, in DMC3, ability to be entertained by pure cheese) is pretty much the only reason to buy a Devil May Cry game. Good enough for me. (Although I didn't know about the dice game before, and that just sounds retarded)

Oh, and the gummy bear line was great.

A well-ungrammered and enjoyable review as always yahtzee. I must say, for the last few reviews you have been reviewing the same games that i find in my roommate's repertoire. And like a good sheep, ive been criticizing his choice of games ever since i laid eyes on his ps3, xbox... oh yeah he has a wii too. Our other roommate is even worse, he's afraid of voicing his opinions when he is and i quote "talking smack about the game cuz the designers worked hard at makin it"

sometimes i wish people would stop being afraid of being cynic, or being afraid having high standards in fear that they would hurt people's feelings otherwise.

aww man i remember that timed, jumpy, fixed camera, infinate enemy battles room!! argghh! memories =p

I don't smell like old meat...
I think.

Half Life is debatable.

Ultima improved consistently from 1 to 7, and then went off the cliff with 8 and 9.

Wizardry for the most part improved with each successive iteration. Was 8 better than CotDS? Tough call.

HoMM. The series really went up and down quite a bit, made by different developers and so on. Not that clear cut.

I don't have enough experience with the others to comment, although I have played GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, and I'm not sure there has been a clear improvement.

What about System Shock?

Same, it's one of my favourite books, and definitely the best in the series.

Anyways, on topic, another cracking review from Senior Yahtzee.

The review itself was Yahtzee in pretty fine form after the "oh crap there is nothing to make fun of let's break out the racism card" of last week. It had praise for elements that deserved it, castigation of shitty design decisions, absurd imagery lovingly bought to life, and an apologia for anime. But what really tickled me was the fact that somebody thought it would be a great idea to have an ad for DMC4 directly after a review which compared it to an ocean of feces. Wonderful, just wonderful.

Is there a sword that seriously turns into a motorbike in the game?

Sequels that are better? 7DAS > 5DAS.
Or is that too fan-boyish of me?

really good review again! well done!

"Am i the only person who caught the Advent Children reference at the very end, where he gives his email address?"

Most likely. Considering he hates japanese rpgs in general, why would he refer to a hideous movie based on one of them unless... unless he takes a poke at it just like he did this game ^^ They are actually very similar now that I think about it : / Compare the cutscene combat to the combat in AC...

Personally I'm currently playing DMC 3, never having played a DMC game before. The gameplay is okay, but the camera is making me nuts. I dislike the idea of a game being hard because I can't see when an enemy is about to bolt at me so I have to jump constantly to be safe ~~

Oh, and I'm off to buy gummi bears for my spider.

I cracked up when I heard the intro song, brilliant choice lol

As always, great review. He does point out some annoying aspects, like the camera, but that Torture chamber jumping section isn't that bad, even on Dante must Die mode. Just don't touch control stick, and it's fine. I'll also admit that Nero was just a bit Emo at time (And he was far cooler then Raiden, though Raiden isn't that bad). Either way, still a greta review.

Being a fan, and at the same time sane, i cant really help but agree on most points, the ones i dont being the ones that are a part of the series and make it fun. But the retreading of everything i already did just annoys me, the adding of a "replacement" when Dante is only 29, the fact that they took Dante's moves and tried to "mix it up a bit" by cocking them up and made him react so fast that my fingers got cramps stringing combos together. But my biggest gripe of all is its too dam EASY! Devil Hunter is what Human mode should be, its an insult to play this after DMC3, where i fought with every ounce of my being to prove my gaming caliber, only to be thrown some twats "idea" of what the next game should be. I would have settled for a half assed story with just Dante and the difficulty double on what i would call the easy mode.

And as for Nero, why did they make the dam arm of his so ridiculously effective? Every move it does knocks off insane amounts of health on otherwise fairly tough enemies. The lack of new weapons is sad too, the gloves and boots are shoddy copies of BeoWulf's ones, the weird dart throwing shoulder majigger (i cant even be bothered to remember its name) is barely useful, Pandora is cool but takes too long to transform and leaves you vulnerable.

Sorry if i annoyed anyone with this rant, i was just so disappointed in it, especially since it took so long to come out, they had more than enough time to design more levels and weapons!

The difference is, Nero's a "p*ssy", Dante's a "c*nt"! Lol. Great review!

I like how I always find myself totally agreeing with everything he says, in the reviews he's done of games I own, or have watched other people play. As stupid as it is, I find this actually steers me in the direction of not wanting to bother buying most of the games he chooses to review.

Also, is everybody here stoned? How come they don't seem to be able to spell this week?

(I don't literally mean everybody.)

Just a tip: most enemies won't start attacks if they are outside of the screen, meaning you don't have to worry much about those you can't see. Also, every attack in the game is preceded by som kind of audio clip (a growl or suchlike). Once you get used to that you can dodge pretty much everything by jumping or rolling when you hear the sound.

More on topic, I love DMC4 but the dice game is stupid as hell. Still, love how Dante just cuts it in half and keeps on walking when he gets to it. It's just what you would have liked to do the first time around. =)

I will admit that the DMC series as a whole isn't exactly Shakespeare (especially DMC2...), but I still like DMC4. I liked 3 too, but I never finished it, just because I couldn't get past a boss because I was the genius that decided to play the damn game on a hard setting. -.- But, yeah, I really enjoy DMC4. It's fun to play and some of the cut scenes are funny as hell. (Lucifer, anyone?). Not only that, any game where I pretty much get to play Vash (from Trigun. Nero and him have the same voice actor) is an instant win. XD

A bit of a problem with women this week, I take it? Good, good.

Someone should explain this Advent Children reference to me. I've watched the movie several times and all I can think of when he mentions the motorbike is the fact that Nero can rev up the handle of his sword.

Great review and all but seriously, saying the amber spy glass is bad seriously isn't cool. Take the mic out of the movie when it comes out *shudder*
