Yahtzee, if you ever deign to read this; understand that people deliberately pause the video to read the small text.

Putting in something like "Send me your knickers girls" will be acted upon. Many times. Many Scary times.

I loved this review, twas funny. Keep it up Yahtzee!

Ah and how many comments? Jesus Christ all fucking mighty.

Does nobody find it strange that 6 months after Yahtzee bags out Halo 3 only 389 comments were posted, yet within 12 HOURS of Yahtzee bagging out Brawl, the comment count has reached 488?

Never doubt the power of fanboys and haters. Its a perfect storm.

No, this is just plain... strange. Halo 3 has the entertainment record for the most copies sold on the first day.

On the other hand, Brawl is most likely gonna get the record for the game with the highest attach rate to a console (excluding bundles of course). Also, most Halo fanboys are banned (not to say fans aren't welcome, they just have to be sensible, like everyone else).

Edit: Root, I don't think Yahtzee, or anyone for that matter, wants the panties of rabid internet fangirls...

I just think its a testament to the advertising campaign of nintendo that there are this many conflicting opinions and discussions over one of their games, its actually being fueled by hate, the only other things i know that do that are the multiple trolling alts i make on numerous gaming forums (none on escapist, surprisingly enough, the mods are quicker on the daw than Eastwood himself) and violence in games.

and thats my thoughts... also it ups this truly titanic post count

Imagine when he reviews MGS4: GotP.

That will be a day of reckoning.

I'm guessing the site will just crash.

No, I think that Nintendious Fanboious is far more protective and rabid compared to its Sony breed, Sonius Fanboious. Though, the the Sonius might be in larger numbers, or be louder. Much louder.

Metal Gear Solid actually isn't as popular as SSB. I also don't think he'll need to be forced to review it, and there won't be so much controversy over it, because he'll probably make a good ol' funny review instead of a rant.

There aren't this many posts on the other nintendo games reviewed. I think it's more that this review wasn't that great; Wasn't that funny, and wasn't that review-ish. Not to mention the slew of anti-nintendo fanboys... there goes the bandwagon.

I hate to say it, but Yahtzee kind of sounded like a fanboy himself...

edit: no he didn't

Well I gotta say, I agree with his point about unlockable content, with the new TF2 update featuring nigh-impossible achievements the average casual player is never going to be able to get.

Also, everyone head to the smash bros brawl wiki page and fight for a mention of this review to stay on the page :P

Sorry, I'll clarify. It sounded like something an xbox or playstation fanboy would have said. It was more of a rant against nintendo and its fanboys than a review.

edit: I take it back!

Like every other review Yahtzee has got it right on the head. I do love beat'em up's and i love the skill based one's like the old street fighter alpha series or VF were you need skill to win and not just another button masha like soul cablier , dead or alive , or SSBB .

Thank you Yahtzee for once again driving nail A into Slot A were it should be and not into Slot B cause a fanboy told you to do it XD

This was pretty much an average ZP imo. There've been worse, there've been better.

Comments after reading this gigantic clusterfuck of a thread..

A)People bashing Nintendo for "milking the same franchises" with Brawl. It's the third game in the series. That practically means it's a new and interesting franchise. GTA, including spinoffs, sits at what now? Halo is at four counting Halo Wars? It's interesting how it's acceptable when someone else does it, but it's bash-worthy when it's a Nintendo franchise. Also, as has been said, without milking we would've never gotten Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time.

B) Jigglypuff is an awesome character. Yes, really. People who make tier lists are odd people. I play Jigglypuff and Peach and I kick the snot out of my "that guy" friends who go by tier lists and limit themselves exclusively to one "top-tier" character. I also play random quite often and I can still beat my "I play only Toon Tink and perhaps Meta Knight" friend about 50% of the time.

C) Peach's Final Smash is an instakill to anyone who are outside of the stage when you perform it and it's a guaranteed kill on anyone who has a high % when you perform it since you can just walk up to'em and forward smash them to oblivion.

Where was the review? There was a comment over the camera and the particle effects but that was it. Rants are fine, but when you've heard the same rant before from someone else it becomes rather boring. We get it. The game isn't the kind of game you enjoy.

Actually there were a few rants in there, all of which we've all heard before.

1. Nintendo uses it's franchise popularity to push games.

2. Fighting games are lame.

3. Unlockable content sucks.

In regards to #3, that one is simply lazy. All it takes is one run through the single player game to unlock all but some 3 characters with only one of those characters actually being unique. You can go through that single player game in a few hours by yourself without a hitch nor does playing through that make you any better at the game to begin with.

Another thing that put me off about the review is the sheer "What?" factor of the whole "You turn into one of those guys" comment. One of those guys? What, you mean the guy who will, most obviously, play the game more because he owns it? Yeah, what a shame being that guy is. Of course, this is completely forgetting the handicap features, different fight modes, and non-seriousness of the actual gameplay.

But this seems to be a trend with Yahtzee reviews. If a game is an absolutely serious FPS action/adventure game (Bioshock, Beginning of Condemned 2, some others) then he can't get into it or really enjoy it. Despite his distaste for people who love games like Halo, he's one of them... and it's a shame.

Of course, this opinion stems from his reviews.

Great review as always, probably one of the best. Its good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks Nintendo are going to shoot themselves in the foot by re-releasing the same games time and time again with virtually no difference apart from a gimmicky pad.

As for Yahtzee sounding like a fan boy, that really makes no sense. A fanboy is when someone ditches logic for a brand name or character(s). Yahtzee is saying that releasing the same games again and again is a disastrous idea & will cause all but the fanboys to stop buying/using the wii. Thats not what an xbox/sony fanboy would say, it's common marketing sense.

I'm not saying Yahtzee's a fanboy, just that he ranted like one. But you're right, it is a stretch from the true meaning.

edit: Not going to dig myself deeper into the hole, I'll retract the fanboy remarks, lol. I stand by this being more of rant than review though.

I'm sorry, so so sorry, but do people remember anymore about the principles of a balanced debate? Fanbois lover/hater emotional logic aside, whose comments will be remembered as the most factual and accurate summary of the current events when all the excited passion has drained from the game?
I do believe that will be YAHTZEE for presenting an unbiased, unemotional and ingenuous review of what many thought was a game designed to be "preaching to the converted". Close and in 2nd place is Indigo_Dingo, who presents arguments backed up by FACTS not emotional plea's. Well done to most replies, perhaps others could read the basics at http://onlinelearn.edschool.virginia.edu/debate/thenine.html before posting. Please. Please read.
Now let's all say THIS IS SPAAAARTA!! sorry (deep voice) GAMETRADERS ROBINA !!

Like Halo? Or Grand Theft Auto? Or Gran Tourismo? Or Medal of Honor? Or Call of Duty?

And to the above poster.. sorry. Yahtzee's review this week is anything but unbiased. He even said at the start that he went into it with a negative disposition.

Wow this must be the most people to have replied to a Zero Punctuation review! Wonder why?

Then again., if he decides to pull it apart and call it crap just for his own sadisitic pleasure...

Never doubt what a person will do if they are goaded. We have 5000 years of war to serve as proof.

And I, ashamedly, went in with a genuinely positive one, this being one of the few titles that ever managed to survive me following its every move from a year before it is released, and still looking really good (Rock Band is the only other one. Guitar Hero III did not survive...)

Angry Yahtzee + Forced reviewing + nintendo + fanboys + a fighting game + multiplayer + overhype = A ZP review worth 500+ posts, I guess.

i wish i was that guy x

There's a big difference between the Halo 3 (and every other reviews he's done) and the SSBB review. Yahtzee actually loves FPS and has obviously played enough of them to justify his review. Also, although he didn't LOVE the game, he said that it was not bad. In SSBB however, the forced the review, used more negative than positive and stated that he doesn't like fighting games. Like I said in my long review of this review (page 5 I think), this is not about not liking SSBB, it's about not liking fighting games in general. He shouldn't reviewing fighting games any more than JRPGs if he doesn't like these genres because no positive can come out of them.

Half-Live sucks, Halo Sucks, Bioshock sucks, but then again, I HATE FPS, so is my opinion a valid one? Fuck no!

I personally think all the bile and hatred makes it all the funnier, but then again I'm not insulted by someone I've never met criticizing a corporation that don't give a shit if i live or die.

But hey, thats just me.

the_importer:

I disagree. As long as he makes it funny and an actual review I don't care whether it's biased or not, really. The SSBB rant just wasn't his best stuff.

And down with your non existant authority, you fan boys. You are worth nothing in the real world, for what strange reason anybody should listen to you on the net either.

Sorry. but you can't make a decent review of a game for which you don't like the genre. You said it yourself, it wasn't his best stuff and the reason is that he doesn't like fighting games and it shows. Most of his rant are criticizing fighting games in general.

Although brawl isnt a bad game, i think the campaign is hours too long and sonic and snake should have been made easier to get
Awesome review. One of the best. On par with tomb raider for my faveroute

Mike

Loved it...ty Yahtzee

Ouch Yahtzee, call me a fanboy but that review was less articulate and funny points and more witless flaming, I agree with some of the things you say except the button mashing.
I have played Brawl once or twice and it seems good, worse then melee due to the character unbalance but still...

Melee was a shining star for me and It's been in and out of boxes since it came out, it represents what a GOOD fighting game should be; Large dynamic stages, plenty of variation in the characters, cheerful and colourful, amazing multiplayer and the added fact that button mashing always loses you the match.

SSB is meant to be a multiplayer game, I recieve no enjoyment from the single player modes in melee, I think I am a "That guy" because I never lose while sober. However, I was only good with one player which I think is the attraction, rather then games like say... Soul Caliber, where any button launches an attack that covers the screen, SB has short ranges attacks and is all about timing and reflexes as opposed to memorizing long attack sequences(DOA! GRRR) It's a great game for parties and just having friends round, the campaign on Brawl having the co-op feature is one of my favourite things.

All in all, you're right, Nintendo does have a habit of remaking things constantly.

Mario- the SNES ones rocked, Mario 64 was ok-ish, everything after? Shit.
Zelda- Ocarina of time was epic, after that the series went downhill (Particularly wind waker).
Metroid- The sequals aren't actually too bad.

Maybe I'm just speaking out of my love for the game, but I think it's worth more then Yahtzee gave it, it's not a serious competetive game like 360 games, it's made for people who enjoy social gamers, I know he hates multiplayer but considering how good the game is, he should of put more effort into the review.

I love these reviews, even if they utterly MAIM the games I like, but when it's just a mindless rant I something get scared that Yahtzee is running out of "The funnies"... I hope that never happens.

(Sorry if I screwed up some spelling or grammar but I'm a tad rushed)

People whine at him to review Brawl, then acted shocked when he (A guy NOT interested in Brawl at ALL) hates it and rips the game and the stupid fanbase to shit?

Nice.

the_importer:

You don't have to like a game's genre to review it. What counts as "decent" is a matter of personal opinion.

No, but if you are automatically biased against said genre then you are not the sort of person who should be reviewing the game, as any review you make will be biased by this.

OK, so if I say that Halo, GTA, Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect suck because I don't like these genres, then my opinion is a valid one >_> ?

bob_bob0:
sonic and snake should have been made easier to get

Sonic? Yeah, that's stupid. You COULD technically just beat Classic Mode 10 times really fast on Very Easy mode though.

Snake? He's technically very easy to unlock.

Play 5 brawls on Shadow Moses: Unlock Ness (5 brawls to unlock, or 10 deflected projectiles in one match)
Play 5 more Brawls on Shadow Moses: Unlock Marth (10 brawls, or beating Classic once)
Play 5 more brawls on Shadow Moses: Unlock Snake (needs 15 brawls on Shadow Moses).

Considering that you can make matches last for literally 1 second by playing a Stamina Flower Brawl with Stamina set to 1, that means you can unlock 3 characters in under five minutes.

Then just play Classic without having to use a continue (piece of cake) to unlock Luigi, and if you do it on Normal Mode or higher within 12 minutes, you also get Captain Falcon. If you haven't already unlocked Marth, then you'll get him for clearing Classic.

In around half an hour, you've unlocked 5 hidden characters. To break up the monotony a bit, take 10 minutes AT THE VERY MOST to clear 100-Man Brawl (which you can do with a friend!), and you'll have Falco.

Then, play Classic on Very Easy-Normal with 7 more characters (to familiarize yourself with the controls). Then play it on Hard with Link or Zelda, and you unlock Ganondorf. Guess what, you've played Classic Mode with 10 characters, you've unlocked Sonic.

Congratulations, you have more than half of the hidden characters unlocked in less than three hours of gameplay.
