Anonymous Source Posts: 4 Joined: 4 Oct 2008 | Yahtzee has made several good points. I wish I could sympathize with him on this one (as I do in most of his reviews), but I have to say that it is the borderline childishness that makes it GOOD. I'm personally tired of bad fighting games involving a obsessive compulsive strategic requirement just to pick the right character. The casual play makes it easy to get into, but it also allows the game to be undeterminable up until the last second. Unless of course you are THAT GUY... Which I am. |

How did the thought of a "." or a "," slip your mind? There's neither in that entire wall of text. I really don't consider myself a grammar nazi, but that is unreasonable. There's not even an attempt being made! |

I won't get that money back, and I honestly haven't played this game for more than 10 hours... probably way less than that. Too similar to Melee, and not worth having when all my mates are off at different uni's. |

OK. That was quite possibly the poorest grammar I have ever seen in a piece of writing longer than a sentence. I do not attack your opinion, but allow me to redo that for you. Every time I correct or change something, I will put a tally. Like this 1 I1 think that2 Brawl3 sucked,4 Melee5 was a better6 game,7 which8 I9 did love and he's10 right about11 button mashing.12 My13 cousins14 have this game and played it for weeks before15 I16 ever17 saw18 it and I19 won every time we played20.21 Don't22 and 23 think that24 it's25 because26 I27 play the28 Wii29 a30 lot31, because32 I33 don't34 own one.35 I36 just randomly flailed37 about,38 pressing things and won.39 I40 think that41 it was stupid and pointless,42 Nintendo43 are beating44 a dead horse with a baseball bat.45 You46 know what I'd47 and 48 play on Wii49?50 One51 where you play as52 a Mississippi53 redneck that beats54 his wife and has sex with his mum55.56 That57 is an58 entertaining game.59 Not only are your views rather warped, but I found 59 spelling and grammatical errors in that. I'm sorry, I allow for things like typos and occasional misspellings, but that was appalling. You fail. F. See me after class. The first MG game for PS was Metal Gear Solid, not just Metal Gear. Nitpicky, but I'm kind of that way. Not exactly that they didn't *trust* Nintendo, it's just that Sony's system was riding the wave of the future with CDs while Nintendo was trumpeting the advantages of cartridge-based games. Seeing as PlayStation basically won the last two console generations, I'd say their choice was apt. And anyway, I vaguely remember hearing that the MGS developers (including Kojima) were literally begging for Snake to be included. And if Snake really was "stolen", I imagine Konami would be suing Nintendo silly for copyright infringement and intellectual property theft. |
Beat Writer Posts: 210 Joined: 27 Dec 2008 | I got the game just recently, I think it's awesome, and I play it frequently. However, I don't disagree with Yahtzee or anyone else on the forums. The adventure mode is way too damn long and repetitive, half of the game needs to be unlocked, and some characters can easily win a game by mashing random buttons. I think it's perfectly OK to use characters like Snake and Sonic in Nintendo games. However, I do see two big problems with this. Two, I'm deeply afraid that because two non-Nintendo characters got into a Nintendo game, the floodgates have been opened wide. Who's next to join Nintendo? Mortal Kombat? Final Fantasy? Batman? |
Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 3 Jan 2009 | Alright here it goes....I love Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. There I said it, it's out in the open so here is my take on Yahtzee's review. He is correct about single player sucking. When you play the single player from beginning to end all that is going through your mind is, "So this is what Sakurai (creator of Brawl) decided to do instead of putting more characters and stages in the game." I do have a problem with Yahtzee saying that even a button masher can beat as he called it "that guy". Maybe this is just in my experience with the game but when someone with no knowledge of the game tries to play, they are awful. No amount of button mashing in the world can make you good against a player who can dodge the moves like nobody's business and who knows all the ins and outs of the game or their character of choice. Yahtzee also mentioned the time it takes for you to unlock Snake and Sonic. This comment is very late so you probably know this by now, but all you have to do to unlock Snake is play 15 matches on Shadow Moses. 15 matches can be played in one night of playing with friends. Now Sonic might take you as long as Yahtzee mentioned, but who cares because you have Snake and he is the best in the game or the cheapest, but hey what is a couple of Snake Final Smashes to the face. Oh yeah and I am not a Smash Bros. Brawl fanboy..................oh wait, yes I am :( |

I knew from the start that Yahtzee was going to rip this game apart, so I didn't despise him for the things he said. In fact, I was just surprised he had even gotten a copy of the game, since it was only released in Japan and America at that point. Anyway, my take on it:
Professionals vs. button mashing? Don't care, I just play the game for what it is.
I could see the characters just fine, except on bigger stages like New Pork City or 75m.
I DO enjoy the spectacle of it, just seeing all my favorite Nintendo characters in one place is satisfying for me, especially King Dedede, Wario, Sonic, and Diddy Kong.
Unlockable characters... It's never really bothered me... Until Mario Kart Wii, that is. :|
It IS weird how Snake and Sonic are supposed to be "secret" characters, yet they're advertised on the back of the box.
I liked the Subspace Emissary, for the most part, though there were several things that didn't add up for me... But hey, this is the first game in the series to actually HAVE a story to it, so it's a start.
Also, which Billy Murray does Yahtzee mean? The American actor or British actor?
This review made me realize that I might be "thay guy", though when people DO come over and play with me, I'm not that competitive.
Actually, that DOES happen with Smash Bros. Brawl (see www.smashboards.com)
I like obscurity, actually. BTW, Marth is the main character of the first and third games in the Fire Emblem series. There's a new game released for the DS in Japan that stars Marth, too, though whether or not it will be released overseas remains to be seen.
Nice Mother 3 comment, BTW! The fan translation is almost done, I've heard.
Also, about the Mario Kart thing, notice that he says "in the next generation". I know what he means by this. How many people are buying Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64 these days?
I didn't defend the name Nintendo Wii. In fact, I outright flamed it! But I still loved this game.
