I get the general impression that Yahtzee doesn't like Web Comics all that much, but its OK because I'm with him on that. Also, its always fun to see who gets banned first in here for shouting first post. (Don't those guys ever learn?)
I read CAD for the once-in-a-blue-moon funny comics, but it can't stand up to PA's constant hilarity or comics like Concerned, C&H, Perry Bible Fellowship, XKCD, and Order of the Stick.
That's horrifying! | |
And that is exactly why we love him.
Yes he was talking about CAD and yes the recent story arc with the tragic miscarriage was a very bad idea but there have been some CAD comics that did get a laugh or two out of me which is really all I ask from something that is meant to be funny. As John Cleese of Monty Python said, "If people aren't laughing it isnt funny." I dont care what the source is, as long as I am entertained then its funny to me.
Oh, wait. It's back up | |
Somehow missed the huge wave of bans, thread deletions and censorship that's gone on in CAD's past because of criticism?
Quoted for truth. I was also looking forward to a game review. This intra spection on gaming culture isn't why I watch zero punctuation. The whole thing seemed like a bit of a waste.
Brilliant Fund it | |
That was really funny, I'm just disturbed at the fact that Yahtzee is apparently one of the shallow readers, like most of the people on this forum, who believe that web comics can and should only deliver the random humor that most do. Personally, I'm quite opposite of him: I haven't found any entertainment in Penny Arcade, I still love CAD and was impressed by Buckley's recent ability to pull of such a tragic and dramatic story with the characters I've grown to love over the years, and the only other webcomic I've actually been impressed with it VG Cats, though on an entirely different level than my love for CAD. I don't know what to say about the fact that so many people here hate CAD: that all comes down to personal opinion, I suppose. But consider this: if you really want nothing more than shallow, random humor with no creativity or meaning to be found, just keep watching Napoleon Dynamite and catch all the Spongebob reruns you can, lest you get sick from overexposure to intelligence.
Nice... This inspired me to take a look at some web comics, and man, are they horrible. I made a web comic to illustrate the main problem with web comics, check it out: http://bp1.blogger.com/_if1EyZzJ54M/SGu2Q2eRxII/AAAAAAAAAC0/KFu47sINGpw/s1600-h/my+web+comic.bmp
Excellent video as always, Overlord Croshaw. I personally like webcomics, including Ctrl-alt-delete (or CAD for you people who feel the need to abbreviate EVERYTHING!). However, the humour has declined as of late, and the whole miscarriage angle was an act of Tim shooting himself in the foot as far as I'm concerned. But the important lesson is this; abstinence is the only 100% effective contraceptive...just ask Mary the Virgin.
LMAO I love how nobody noticed this one! Well played pun, sir/ma'am!
What game would he review? The only one I can think of is Ninja Gaiden 2 that's popular and out.
... CAD had a miscarriage plotline? Holy crap, I thought Yahtzee was joking. Who the hell thought "okay, let's do an arc of losing a child"? That is just... mindblowingly stupid. In other news, I'm very happy to see Mac Hall, Dinosaur Comics, and the wonderous XKCD on his list of comics he likes.
As a large crockpot of malice toward the bullshit masquerading as a webcomic that is CAD, I enjoyed the latter half of this review. The whole thing was pretty entertaining, though, and certainly rang of truth as far as gaming comics are concerned. As for Tim Buckley, he needs to forcibly remove his head from his ass. When you have such a large contingency of people who hate your work with a passion, it takes some serious arrogance to think that nothing is wrong with your comic.
All I have to say about the CAD hate is this: why is it that when someone likes something you do not like, they are not human?
This one wasn't very funny IMHO. I think Yahtzee made a lot of good points, but it just didn't really come together right. It'll probably be back to normal next week.
I was honestly referring to Yahtzee in particular, as he isn't a member on the CAD forum and therefor the only possible way to retaliate would more than likely be to make a comic about it. I also normally try to avoid forums of such sites, as they seem to be full of rampant fanboyism and blind followers, and, while I'm sure such is the case for CAD as well, this forum is no exception to the rule.
And that is shocking that you laugh at other peoples shock.
I completely agree with yahtzee on this one. Has anyone ever read VG cats? perfect example.
cats? what the crap!? | |
Also, threads have been deleted (or at least closed) that were full of Yahtzee haters. Doesn't seem like a retaliation to me.
I found this review funny up until the miscarriage reference. While I like CAD and Penny Arcade the reason why I didn't find the comic particularly funny after that is that the article just sorta degenerated into a hatefilled attack on one comic in particular and ceased making valid points, oh sure they are valid if given the context of all second and third rate comics as a whole but Ctrl-Alt-Del is hardly crap, sure not everyone finds the same things funny but here's whats needed to be considered: -People do find it funny. I do find the current review "funny" but only really if I can convince myself that its not directly meant to bash one particular comic with only a flimsy reference to other comics to give the illusion of a fair and objective review. So, people who don't like CAD *shrug*, and so Yahtzee doesn't like CAD also *shrug* as Tim said "everyone is entitled to their own opinions" and so it will. But personally speaking, that CAD actually does have drama and a story line is why I like it it has more deph to it then the 90% of crud out there and to me in my entirely personal opinion if Yahtzee ever got a story line to go with his reviews I'ld be all over it like shit on Velcro.
the anti- B^U video. i loved it.
Right... well www.vgcats.com is kinda funny... sorta...
Hey, boyo, he apparently likes VG Cats. http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/features/goodcomics.htm As do I. :D It's my favorite stupid-funny webcomic.
It is one thing to make a serious webcomic. There are several out there and some of them are actually quite brilliant. It is however a idiots stunt to suddenly switch your shallow, random humor comic into rape-mode. Especially in the style of "Oh my fiancee had a miscarriage, probably the worst thing that can happen to a woman. And instead of visiting her I pity myself cause I now have to play Halo with my robot again instead of my baby"
A gaming comic goes off topic with a miscarriage comic rather than the gaming references and humor, while a game review movie goes off topic grinding an axe against a webcomic artist rather than reviewing games with his usual humorous and hate filled insight. *shrugs* whatever, slow week for the internet gamer who still actually plays games.
Why not another "retroview" or whatever. I loved the Painkiller vid.
If you think that webcomics just suck (I know most of them do, most of the web sucks, but that hasn't turned you off to the internet now has it?) then you probably aren't aware of the sheer vatriety of what's out there. Allow me to demonstrate: boltcity.com - Copper: A boy and his dog discuss life and love while wandering lush and whimsical landscapes. drmcninja.com - Dr. McNinja: a send-up of superhero comics that just keeps getting weirder. So far he's fought Ronald McDonald, banditos riding velociraptors, and a Danish action hero with an army of ninjas, to name a few. gunnerkrigg.com - Gunnerkrigg Court: two girls explore the mysterious Gunnerkrigg Court, a school with many secrets where magic and technology collide. xkcd.com - XKCD: stick figures having amazingly geeky conversations and graphs describing the effects of bacon on health. seraph-inn.com - Inverloch and The Phoenix Requiem: not one but two high fantasy adventures with beautiful artwork. As an added bonus, Inverloch is finished so you could go read the whole thing from beginning to end now and never have to wait for an update. shortpacked.com - Shortpacked: the tales of a dysfunctional toy store. This one's interesting because it touches on another kind of geekery altogether and because it sort of deconstructs the whole "drama in a comedy strip" conflict. pbfcomics.com - The Perry Bible Fellowship: A mix of surreal and often macabre humor that plays with a variety of art styles. I know video games and tech humor are where webcomics started, but the whole community has come a long way in the past 10 years and there are a lot of other things out there now too.
This review made me go through my webcomics list, and I came to the realization that there are no good gaming based webcomics. There's a few nice ones with gaming refrences, but any webcomic about games or gaming (of the video kind) always seams to suck bullocks. Now where does the tiff between Yatzee and Buckly come from? As this is the first of heard of it, or does Mr. Croshaw just dislike CAD; a lot!
I find this entire argument sort of odd... A friend of my brother's from highschool is good friends with Tim, and I've always heard good stuff from him. I think my brother met him at a party, along with Gabe and Tycho. What is this about him being an asshole? And about the miscarraige thing... Sure it's depressing and an odd turn for a normally funny comic. But without intense drama, is the comedy even noticeable? I'm sure there was a Terry Pratchett book where a beloved character died, and I'm sure that some of the best comedies have their sad moments. The whole video was a thinly veiled attack on CAD. Ethan is the first guy, Lucas is the second, and Lilah is the third. Yes Ethan is stupid, Lucas is the straight man, and yes Lilah is like a mother. But name me a sitcom in the last 20 years which doesn't contain a main male character infatuated with breasts/the promise of sex? I'm not the world's biggest CAD fan, in fact I like Penny-Arcade much better. But criticizing a writer for writing what he want's because it's not what you expect? Seems kind of wrong.
Given Tim's record, that last comment of his surprised me. I've gone off CAD, now the only thing that makes me genuinely laugh webcomic-wise is the fantastic xkcd.
If only he could review movies. (Mind wanders off into the laugh fest that will sadly never be.)

Normally, I think Yahtzee is funny, even when I like the game he's bashing. I like CAD, and I didn't think this was funny at all. A few true statements were made, but that didn't make them funny. It all just seemed childish to me...the same with a lot of the comments made.
