Stolen Pixels #4: Epic Message

Stolen Pixels #4: Epic Message

In this installment of Stolen Pixels, Shamus Young takes sides in the console vs. PC war. But he figures Epic beat him to it.

It's so true... *sob*

Oh jesus, don't remind me. I played Unreal Tournament 3 at a tech camp recently, and my computer crashed so much for no reason at all.

Excellent comic. Boy am I glad that I'm on the PS3 end!

Epic makes though one "Epic" thinking error: The PC market made them what they are now so they literally bite the hand that fed them. Oh well, there are others to take their place :D

I already argued the point to death on Twenty-Sided Tale, so I'll make minor notes of it here, but being a primary console gamer I still found UT3 to be ridiculous. I hate their interface, even as a console gamer, and I hate the reduced multiplayer modes, even as a console gamer. UT3 was just a series of bad design choices.

As for the market moving against PC gamers, over the past several days I've seen a lot of trailers pop up on GameTrailers.com of several games that are PC exclusive, so maybe the problem is PC gamers aren't looking hard enough for games for their platform.

That's right. Who's my bitch?

And to think I switched from Mac to PC just in time for the game market to dry up. *sigh*

At least there's Steam.

PC Lamerz. That phrased doesn't get used enough.

Wait... people actually own a PS3?

Me :D? alright, seriously now. I played UT3 on a PS3, mainly because the 360 version of it was doa until just recently now, but I have to say I'm not impressed. It was like someone put together everything bad about halo3, cod4, and gears of war and put it all on laggy servers with a bunch of shit weapons. Epic seems to be doing quite well in the failure department but who knows, they may need help sooner or later.

As a long time Mac-user, I say that it is about time PC gamers learned what it's like to wait for games. I have a console! I'm getting games before you without those damned CD Keys and online verifications and so forth.

Do you have any idea what it's like to the Mac user who had to wait a full YEAR beyond the PC release for the various Civilization Titles to make their way to the Macintosh? I guess maybe now you do. Mass Effect, console, then PC with an activation code. Same with Bioshock, and doubtless others that I'm not listing.

So maybe it's petty, but also maybe people now know how I felt for more than a decade while the games I desperately wanted kept coming out for PC and either not at all for Mac, or for Mac a year later.

Ooh, Shamus, you almost have a taker for your console-baiting there! Except it's Mac vs. PC, which is the most boring discussion flacidly being fought out on the internet ever..

Is this new? How did I miss this on escapist before?

Anyway, I like it, and I'll be looking for MOAR!!!

It's hard not to blame companies for moving away from the PC, but there's no excuse for crappy design.

Halbert speaks the truth. I don't blame them for moving away from the PC. But I intend to bitch about it anyway. It doesn't help but it's very satisfying and way cheaper than just going out and buying a console.

Also, consoles don't have a mouse. Macs do, I've heard. Decisions..!

Good thing I stuck to classic Unreal. Still loads of fun to be had on UT2004 anyway.

Shamus Young:
. . . and way cheaper than just going out and buying a console.

Said the Wii owner. ;-)

2004? Nothing compared to the original Game of the Year Edition ... I can *still* have fun on that one.

Surely that suggests the market didn't dry up, it just evaporated...?

Actually, that's a surprisingly good metaphor, as the PS3 and X360 are both large enough to be condensers...

Don't know if you've got something against PC gamers or anything but lets hope it stays that way, Otherwise we will start hearing the terms:

Console Lamerz

Casual Lamerz

Hardcore Lamerz

[game system goes here] Lamerz

[insert gaming related term here] Lamerz

Your first paragraph in this "article" illustrated it perfectly, especially with the "just friends" thing - and in the first panel "like how you have to murder someone in a gang". It wouldn't have been so bad if they made a different version for PC or something but no all 3 versions of the game got the short end of the stick, and EPIC has the rest.

Seriously UT is about how expansive, huge, and moddable it is, and the 360 just got some new maps. The PS3 version has mod capability but the mod tools are on the PC so that's a bust - and then last but not least, hate to use the term but UT3 was heavily "consolized" and now we have "Stolen Pixels" making awesome comics about it. -and the Wii didn't get it.

Everyone lost!

ElArabDeMagnifico:
Everyone lost!

Not everyone!

Epic still has my fifty bucks.

UT3 sucked so badly, at least from a pc fps standpoint. Whoever thought up vehicle capture the flag and decided to get rid of assault should die. UT classic rocks though. I wanted UT classic 2 but instead they took all the recent additions from the series and made them worse... somehow...

Uhm.Hi. =]

So, basically I can't post a thread, so I wanted to come into this one and see what it's about. Even though I don't understand what you're talking about. It seems interesting enough.

:]

Shamus, great work here. Seems a fine descendant of DM of The Rings (and Chainmail Bikini).
Keep going!

This is exactly what most companies are doing except VALVe. Business wise it is a smart move. Activision/Infinity Ward is a prime example of PC gamers getting duped like what happened to UT3. Oh well, going to go play TF2. Great job Shamus.

(Sorry mods, didn't look at the date of the original poster or the last post.)

It's funny cause it's true... *sob*

I would love to hit Marc Rein in the face right now.. Mostly because his smug grin makes me want to hit him...
