Anonymous Source Posts: 8 Joined: 29 May 2008 | I don't feel like reading all 10 pages in this thread in order to see if anyone else noticed this, but CALIBUR is actually spelled RIGHT (as far as the celtic origin of the word and visibly the developper's use of it ; i'll explain later) Why CalibER anyway? Sorry if I'm being finicky about this detail, but I've allways thought that Soul Calibur is actually an excellent name for a game, and definately ALOT better than the standard fighting game's "MortalK(yes, with a K)ombat or other "Street/Ultimate/insertrandomword Fighter". Let me elaborate a bit : Excalibur (and not excaliber) deviated from the french Escalibor is king Arthur's legendary sword, word that means "cut-steel" in celtic. As for the review, yahtzee doesn't like fighting games. Right. You could replace all instances of Soul Calibur with Street Fighter (or any other fighting game actually) and it wouldn't bother you ; it's not a game review "per-se", it's a GENRE review. It really was an entertaining review though, and you can't argue with mathematical demonstration... but WHY soul caliber?? |

Seriously just 'cause yahtzee's not into fighting games that doesn't give him the right to say that it's not fun for ANYONE despite the stupidity of people whom have never seriously played it and TRIED to like it's constant opinion and blind rallying behind yahtzee croshaw... whatever, the point is that the review was biased, and that's his right as a journalist to BE biased but overgeneralizing and stereotyping such as to say that NOBODY WILL EVER ENJOY THIS GAME is a twat move in my opinion. |

"Even if they do they will probably still be defeated by the random button masher at some point anyway." No. Never going to happen no matter how many times you lick Potzhees balls. Unless of course you suck and are just pushing buttons yourself in which case you have two button mashers hoping to luck into a win even though in the end you are both losers. "Fighting games are only meant for this VERY small group of gamers who imo play because when they eventually learn all these moves and can beat anyone in it they can pet their ego" Fighting games are made for people who like fighting games, asshole. Yes, generally the people who like them play them to fucking win, duh. Very small group of people who are any good at a particular game? Maybe, seems to be a whole lot of suck asses out there crying about getting lolpwned so you might just be right. User was banned for: Zero Punctuation: Soul Calibur IV. (Permanent) |

I could deal with the bias. Thats to be expected. What I cannt deal with is him being an easy mode bitch and not even playing half the games he reviews or doing the most pants on head retarded thing he can and then calling a game broken because he is doing the most pants on head retarded thing he can. Anonymous Source Posts: 2 Joined: 24 Aug 2008 | Well apart from the stats part, i disagreed with a lot of things he said, usually i find myself laughing at his reviews, because i feel the same way about many of the points he'll make - but this is just about his personal disliking for fighting games. And as for the grabs, if he really had put the difficulty up - he wouldve found grabs DONT always work, that part of the video was just for comedic effect, of which it had none. Oh and yeah Calibur comes from Excalibur, you know, the Celtic myth? Why are you complaining its misspelt. I've lost some respect for you now Yahtzee. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 7 Joined: 19 Aug 2008 | i agree with bodiddly83, even if he is being an overzealous cunt he's still right for the most part. It's not exactly fair to say that yahtzee's an easy mode bitch or that he doesn't play the games he reviews but he still has to kick and scream like an 11-year old girl getting her first period EVERY FUCKING TIME he has to review a game from a genre he doesn't like. I mean really, nobody held a fucking forty-five to the base of his temple and made him play SC4 he just did it because he knew he could make a few closet homosexuals living in their mother's basements titter slightly at the curse words and funny remarks. If he's only going to bitch about something that ACTUALLY BRINGS JOY to some other people because it's not his fucking cup of tea then to hell with him. If it's not his bag, then it's not his place to criticize. |

Well I have to agree with you there, my only reason for quoting you is to elaborate upon the meaning of the word "Excalibur" and it's alteration in use for the term "Soul Calibur". While there are several definitions of the word "Excalibur" due to the fact that Celtic is such a loose and perversable language, the term generally means one of two things: 1. "Ex" from the Latin root meaning "without" or "removed from" and "Calibur" being an indo-european Celtic Latin hodgepodge meaning "measure of power" or "standard of power". This first definition implies that the excalibur is, in essence; a sword for which there is no mortal equal. A weapon of the gods. (Or God, in the non-druidic version of the tale.) 2. The other meaning is the Celtic derivation of the term to mean something to the effect of "cutting blade" or something of the sort. The developers could easily have used either of the derivations in the title of the series, but with grandly differing meanings. I wouldn't know which exactly they meant by it, but I'm sure that information exists at their website or somewhere on the internet. |

I agree that the game is really reaching out for more fans and money. I mean honestly, Yoda? Darth Vader? they should have added in Johnny depp if they wanted a worthwile backstory and character. |

Its also true theat he does the dumbest things he can on them to act like the shit is broken. if he likes interactive movies than whats with his beef with MSG4? It seems like your feelings were hurt with this review little boy. ohh, and btw, anyone who takes yahtzee seriously is retarded. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 67 Joined: 9 Mar 2008 | well... he could've just said "I don't like fighting games and the japanese 'art style' overall just pisses me off" and get over with it. The only thing I agree on is that the Star Wars franchise tie-in is weird and pointless. The rest of the review is just a pretty pointless rant about the nature of fighting games and how he doesn't like them in general. |

They just think the people are so fucking stupid(not knowing the diference between a game and a fucking movie) that they have to repeat dialog over and over again. My feelings are hurt that easymode bitches talk shit about shit they dont understand and cannt do. yutzhee takes himself seriously, and thats the fucking problem. Im a little boy. Anonymous Source Posts: 5 Joined: 8 May 2008 | Well after his review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I angrily said that none of his arguments were in fact directed at the game, but rather at the genre. I said he doesn't really get the genre. And well, looks like I was right. It's too bad, too, but I can understand it because I've got a friend like him. He doesn't like fighting games because he doesn't like competing with other people and thus losing, and he feels that practice can be surmounted by button-mashing, which isn't true for most fighting games. So well, can't say I'm surprised. But I can say that I'm glad he reviewed a great PS3/XBox360 fighting game so that the crowd that used his previous review of SSBB as a rallying cry against the Wii and that game can shut up. Bent, he probably stopped with the old music style to avoid getting sued. |

I think you have the wrong reason for why Yahtzee dislikes fighting games. Fighting games are designed to be multiplayer games. Obviously, it's going to be easy to defeat a computer that uses the same types of attacks as the player, since computers aren't yet as smart as people. This means that the real challenge comes from playing against other people. This is where Yahtzee has problems. You see, Yahtzee is a misanthropic shut-in. He doesn't have friends in the same sense that you and I have friends. What he does have are lines of code, which make a poor substitute. Thus, Yahtzee becomes bitter and takes out his frustrations on a game that he perceives as inferior because he doesn't play it the way it's meant to be played. |

For the record, I'm not a fan of either. I recognize that the SC games are below average, and I don't really like playing fighting games most of the time. The problem is that Yahtzee here gives the entire genre a load of shit that it doesn't really deserve based on a few limited experiences with a lesser game. While I generally get bored with the SC style as well, it does have its strong points, and it's somewhat closed-minded of Yahtzee to overlook them entirely. Then again, that is what makes the review entertaining. |

Paperboy Posts: 11 Joined: 23 Apr 2008 | Well the main point of this game IS to make you a Mary Poppins character, going online, and beating the crap out of everyone. Now that's fun. So the fact that someone's ethernet cable is once again missing from the console, and afterwards delivers half a story, makes this whole thing kinda meh'ish. The tidbits about the rest of this games is spot on though. |
