Funny as hell review. I STILL want to know who the guy is in the pictures. It's making me BATTY. Every review has it and I've NO idea who it is. I beg for assistance! |
Paperboy Posts: 18 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | Suprised to see such a negative review for a game whose play style I thought would be somewhat similar to a series that Yahtzee liked so much(relativly speaking of course). Namely the Prince of Persia Series. Ok not that suprised. Still it was an experiment and glad to see somethign new for a change. So how about some improvements for the game, I can think of a couple: - Introduce some stealth elements. In fact add all these things together and you have!!! TRILBY: THE ART OF THEFT 3D :P (p.s Yes, I am a horrid fanboy twat) |
Beat Writer Posts: 210 Joined: 18 Mar 2008 | I almost bailed on this review half way through, too wordy with his metaphors, and he's all over the place, it is a bit of a mess. I think Yahtzee phoned it in this time. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 672 Joined: 17 Sep 2007 | I'll admit, the game was pretty short, but I'm quite endeared to it. Now I know what it's like to *totally* disagree with Yahtzee about a game. :) I mean, at 8 hours, you think he might have gotten the story aspect. What was in the packages or who the contacts were wasn't the problem. It was unmonitored information/matterials transfering. Basicly, what could happen in (just an example) a world twisted by fear from terrorist attacks like 9/11. Think Patriot Act taken to the next level. The government wasn't nessessarily evil. Some of the politicians sure as hell were though. They did a good job at keeping everyone safe, and their intentions are decent enough. The cost however is sacraficing freedom. The real evil bastards are the one politician guy (no, not the dead one), the body guard, and what'shisface runner guy. But hey, the concepts of this game focus on Freedom (life, movement, enviroment, etc etc), and then the world being robbed of it. It's on the verge of Cyberpunk without the fancy cyborg implants and dystopian world. It's not for everyone, obviously, but Yahtzee's opinion of it does not do it justice to me. |

I'm not so sure about the grappling hook thing. I mean, the style that Faith uses is Parkour, which utilises momentum and requires you to be light on your feet. Bad enough she's gotta lug a bag around. :) Still, sprucing up the enviroment a little with those awning (I forget what their called) door cover dealies. Make them absorb fall imapct or something-- I can see that enhancing the freedom of movement that the game promotes. :) |

So please, do not ever take his reviews as an indicator on wether or not you should try the full game! Enjoy his hate speeches like I do, but don't believe he's right on the money everytime or because he is right on the money on something (very little information about the government in ME indeed), that doesn't mean the actual game isn't any good. ME is good, not without its flaws and certainly not for everyone, but give it a chance. |

[/quote] Actually, they should have simply ditched the shallow storyline based in a completely unexplored game world and just made the game about beating your best time on a level. Think about it. Just about every review that's mentioned the time trials has said it's the best part of the game and a lot of people will get a lot more run for their money from the game from that, but if you're playing it just for the story you might as well not. It's maddening. Everybody hates having to replay the same checkpoint over and over because there's a stupid jumping puzzle in the way while a bunch of guards perforate you. Yet everybody loves replaying the same level over and over because they're trying to beat their best time. I do love the game, but it's been a while since I've seen a game shoot itself so comprehensively in the foot as this. They pinned everything on the story mode experience when that was the most poorly executed representation of what was fun about the game, and they didn't even put a huge amount of effort into making the story interesting. |

It's actually not that bad, and the reason your chased is explained on the first chapter and from then on, about how your a suspect for a mayors death. In fact his billboards are everywhere, and I have a good bet that yahtzee got the game on the 360 cause I did not have a single problem he listed. There is even a button that lets your head spin in a 180 degree angle. Well this is also true for fallout3 but there really wasn't much a review here and no story mechanics, he even left a major part of the story out about how you have a sister and she is a cop put in jail cause she is a suspect also. If yahtzee had played the main story in fallout3 he would have found out Liam Neeson comes back due to the fact he is the entire plot of the freaking game!!!!!!!!!!! |
Press Junketeer Posts: 373 Joined: 4 Dec 2008 | This is actually not the first game to do this idea of "everything in first person shooting. Even cutscenes." I can actually think of a game where it was all in First Person that even Yahtzee may have liked if he played it. Does anyone remember the game Breakdown? (Sometimes called Project Breakdown.) Refresher: Mirror's Edge reminds me of that, but the story is not as in-depth, the controls are tighter, the movement is more...precise. Derrick was a bit sluggish in movement. Yeah you don't get super powers, but Faith still kicks ass in FP. I agree that the story in ME could have been better, but this might be part 1 of the story and they might make a sequel. |

If Saab's sell like watery ejaculate between two slices of cardboard because the cars are overpriced in comparison to their attractiveness you can't blame GM for that until you can prove that GM required everyone at Saab's Trollhättan factory to wank all over the cars before shipping them and then trying to use this as the main selling argument. If DICE made a bad game, the only thing you can blame EA for is funding it, but that still doesn't take away the fact that all the creative decision makers are DICE and not the mother-company. /S |
Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 4 Dec 2008 | To be fair this game isn't for everyone and I can understand the criticims, its by no means the best game i've ever played but the gameplay was original if flawed and found it a promising start, hopefully a sequal will improve things. The platforming was highly entertaining, story was shite, though suprisingly I found the combat extremly enjoyable, the fights were like a puzzle on how best to seperate and take down your enemy. all in all a very enjoyable weekend was had playing this. on a side note: why souldn't some games be shorter? I generally find a sub 10 hour game the optimal time for a title. When they are this length you don't get the padding phenomenon |

This review has given me a good hour to get away from my boring job (55 minutes of page refreshing, and 5 of watching the video). I do have one concern, though. If you live in Australia, why are you releasing your videos at 2 to 4 o'clock in the morning? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2068 Joined: 5 Jun 2008 | Another great review. I could tell this game would be short when I saw the amazing graphics on the trailer, but I guess some people can just play it over and over trying to beat their previous time. I actually got vertigo on some of my falls! |

Beat Writer Posts: 135 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | I sense harsh feelings at being bad at a game. Yahtzee, that's not professional. Using "I didn't jump at the right time" and twisting it to "The game obstructed my view of being able to jump" is a wee bit lame. You're in the eyes of the person you play, look down as you run at the edge, like you normally would jumping. You probably wouldn't get very far if you jumped off something in real life, and didn't watch to see where the ledge started heh. As for the story, it's lite, agreed. Though it is all explained, not sure how you missed that actually. You're clearly told in the cut scenes that the goverment has taken away the rights of most people living in the city. That most people are to much in a rut to even notice it. Those who do resist are driven to the very edges of society, unable to communicate or live like normal human beings. The runners delivers packages, messages and what else to these people. These people being activists and rebels fighting against the cities oppresion. More of the story is told during the games story as you complete it, for spoiler reasons, I won't go into it. You probably switched off due to the "OMG ANIME STYLE CUTSCENES!!!". I liked the game. It was fun, fast paced, and worked well. I didn't really see the problem. |

Three counterpoints: 1. You imply the EA suits don't interfere with decisions made at one of their subsidiaries. Not working as a suit at DICE I can't say for sure of course and I doubt you can either (unless you are one of course) but considering EA's usual demeanor even in a developer publisher relationship I very much doubt that. 2. If GM would found a subsidiary Evil Corp. tomorrow which murders kittens and dumps toxic waste in a Captain Planet fashion all over the world, you can be sure that the shit - both morally and even more importantly legally - will come down on GM. 3. If you follow your argument logically to it's conclusion then NO game is actually made by EA as all their games are made by subsidiaries. Everything else would be a double standard born out of your liking of the games by DICE, Bioware or Maxis but general despise of anything else made by EA. While the latter would make you a hypocrite, the former might hold some weight if you regard all that money for branding (cause to take your example, a Saab is still a Saab, not a GM or GM Saab) as leftovers they want to burn before all those poor suckers come begging. But then again, any further discussion would be pointless. If you don't even believe EA that it is their game - and they tell you that in more then one way - what can I do to change that? |

What I was trying to say was that a game can be pretty flawless and you may still dislike it. And a game may be full of flaws or shortcomings and you still may like it. Yahtzee liked No more heroes, I kinda did too, but I dont know why. The story was just a mess, the combat repetitive, the graphics terrible and so on, but I still liked the game. But for some reason I found Okami a bit boring, even though it is better game than no more heroes in just about every way. Therefore, using the word standard, and saying that as long as yathzee really hates a game, he wouldn't like it either, was what I reacted at. And I really liked the game, all its flaws considered. No problems with platforming at all. I though it played better than many third person platformers. |

I'll stand for that now the Aus dollar is a steaming piece of shit(*clap, clap, clap* I said Keven Rudd would do this but no one listened.) but go back 3-4 months and that's when we all had a reason to be pissed, the Au dollar was worth somewhere around 94cents Us and we still payed $100 for a game. It's like Trent Reznor(Nine Inch Nails)said, just because Australia has dedicated fans(apply's to most things from my view)doesn't mean we should have our prices jacked up. |

I really disagree with Yahtzee on this one (again). The story wasn't overly involving, but at the very least there were unconventional game mechanics that made for some interesting problem-solving. It was somewhat repetitive, but so is every other first-person game to a degree. It also seemed to me that his Mirrors Edge review contradicted some of his own statements in other reviews (ie: the compliment he gave Painkiller- the simplicity).
I think that he missed the point of this game, which is to find the fastest breakneck-speed pace through every level. I've beaten it four times now, and I'm at the point that I can go through nearly every level without slowing down. I think it's pretty exhilarating.
