I'm lucky that my mother (for the most part) leaves me alone to play my videogames as much as I want. But with the story of that guy's wife in mind, I think it's sad that he married someone that doesn't understand or accept his enjoyment of videogames. Besides family members, who you don't have a choice with, you shouldn't sorround yourself with people that don't understand you or what you like, and certainly not marry them. Or if you do, don't complain about it.

thanks mum ^w^
XD its not really fair for me, my mum was hooked on the Tomb Raider series, she's still trying to finish the latest one, plus my mum is younger than my friend's mums, so she's closer to this generation

I think I have a pretty good plan worked out with my wife. We spend a few hours a night after work together to have dinner and watch tv/spend time together. After that we usually have a few hours to ourselves so that she can watch her reality show crap (that I refuese to watch) and I can play my games.

Strategy guides ruin the fun of exploration, besides the internet probably has the same information for free.

Agreed. Why would you recommend anyone purchase one when there's a spoilernet available for all?

Unless you're part of some underground strategy guide conspiracy or part of some covert guerrilla marketing campaign on behalf of the Kabal of Gaming Strategists.

I'm able to play in peace, as long as I remember headphones when others are sleeping. That minor inconvenience is the prime reason I'm looking at investing in property, once we feel the true impact of this housing crisis down here.

The only problem I have with the girlfriend is that when I have a game she doesn't want to watch (Shooters, GTA, Survival Horror) it is very hard to find time to play it.

I thank the good graces above for my family everyday, each and every one of us understanding of some aspect of gaming. My sister is a rabid insta-gratification shootathon junkie. My little bro, only 5, already shooting his way through Sonic Adventure levels with gleeful ease. My mum loves racing games and wii-games, but she's willing to try others, she even wants to start playing WoW soon if you can believe it. Dad, talks about potentials of gaming consoles with me once a week in an evening debate, I look forward to it.

...I feel bad for people with game hater families =( I got real lucky. <3

While I will say this, some people veiw strategy guides as a sign of weakness...she may of blown you off for the wrong reason but maybe that's how she saw it. Me...depends on the game, I cave if I'm stuck for a week... And in which case it's probably already aaalll over the internet.

My wife used to heap rations on me if I decided to play WoW for 4 hours on a weekend at any given sitting. She just couldn't see how or why....not the fact that Saturday and Sunday are my only two days off, and after I do chores about the house (laundry, vacuum, etc...) how coudl possibly anyone want to be left alone for a few hours in peace and quiet and enjoy a world outside of my own.

Then she discovered FaceCrack.

Now she realizes she can't grief me anymore for my playing habits as she herself admittedly is now addicted to throwing 'virtual snoballs' and handing out 'virtual drinks' and dreaming up captions for pictures of friends. It's like a high school lunch break that never ends.

HA!

My Girlfriend can be like that about games but since we started playing Soul Calibur together she's got better. I've got her Fable 2 for Xmas so hopefully she'll enjoy that and realise what I like about games.

I doubt I'll get her playing Left 4 Dead any time soon, but it's a start.

Thanks Vivian! (my girlfriend)

Actually, she usually joins and helps me. We tend to share video games, even 1 player ones (taking turns or simply watching the other one play). Unfortunately, we only get this way when it comes to video games. She despises the fact that I play warhammer, and almost goes out of her way to make me feel bad when I do. but other than that, we get along well with gaming. I remember way back when Kingdom hearts 2 came out, she was out of town. She called me up mere minutes after I put the disc in:
"Hey honey, what are you up too?"
"Just bought Kingdom Hearts 2 and I just started it.(pause game) What's up?"
"Oh, nothing, I'll let you get back to your game. I know you've been waiting for it. Just wanted to say hi. Don't ruin any of it for me!"

My parents use to bug me about gaming, saying it was a waste of time. Then I won $500 in a smash bros. tournament, they tend to bother me less now. (unless I'm playing rock Band really loud)

You know, normally I found little asides of this sort to be somewhat off-putting, and often decidedly random. Perhaps because I've been antagonized so often in recent past that I find these little treasures even more enjoyable when I get them.

So, excellent writing, Susan. I shall celebrate my peace by enjoying my escapism.

Yea, I'm pretty happy with the situation. I get my game time in and I also get to spend time with my wife. Plus she's happy with how it works as well.

I recommended the strategy guide because I find it particularly useful (maps are your friends) and the guide for Fallout 3 is particularly well done. And she wasn't saying she didn't want it because he wouldn't need it - I have absolutely no problem with that - she didn't want to do anything that might facilitate him playing the game.

You lucky humans :( I come from a family of technophobes, none of them game, or even use the internet unless it's to book flights or a concert on ticketmaster. At the worst of times they've told me that they're worried about my "internet addiction" (spending up to five hours online between gaming with friends, chatting with people on MSN, and watching videos and doing college work amounts to an addiction apparently), and at the best of times told me that I'm wasting my life in front of a screen. They disapprove of basically everything that involves a computer.

Lucky people. Whenever anybody I live with comes in they will bitch and whine for me to stop playing. Gets quite annoying really. Even when I refuse they will sit next to me annoying me until I just turn it off.

Good point. I never really thought about that. My parents used to be a bit dodgy about me playing games, especially my dad was always telling me to get outside. But now, since I've become good friends with another gamer and attended a couple of tournaments they're fine about it. They let me game in peace. They don't really understand it, but they let me get on with it. I should really be more grateful for that.
If only my brother was the same. Of course, he only doesn't let me play in peace because he always wants to play Guitar Hero.

That's what spurred me into saving up my pennies and buying my own awesome TV and sound system. I could lock myself away and immerse myself in gaming, without anyone bothering me, unless the house was shaking due to bass. After seeing the lengths I'd go to feed my addiction and create the perfect gaming experience, added to the fact that I'm employed and not living form paycheque to paycheque, they finally learned to live with it.

Also, when I bought my awesome TV, I also bought my mum a less awesome, but still pretty special TV. That kinda shut her up.

The moral of this story is, the best way to shut people up is expensive gifts.

I think my family tolerate my game playing in the same way I tolerate their watching the TV at 2am with the sound on full, or vaccuuming at 6am.

In other words, not very.

They've learned that nothing short of a crowbar gets me off if I don't want to be moved, so they just call me 'anti-social'. I can live with that.

my house mates are pretty good. none of them play much (they have had the odd go in the while growing up but it hasn't gone further than that) but they know i do play more than they do and they let me get on with it. a couple of times they have joined in and its been great fun

Seriously. Winning anything at any tournament really helps get everyone off your case. Just find a local gaming haven and try to convince them to host a tournament.

My parents, having been persuaded to actually attempt to play games before they pass judgment, now make sharp distinctions between "good" and "bad" categories of games. Talking loudly on Ventrilo instead of going to class? Bad. Having friends over for a little System Link action? Good. Desktop Tower Defense? Guilty pleasure.

When I purchased my copy of Oblivion, the GameStop salesman suggested I pick up the strategy guide as well, because the world was so large and complicated. It didn't help that my friend was there with me, had played it all before and has no concept of saving money. Basically it was a tag team. So, there I was spending forty bucks on a game with another forty for the damned guide. And I did buy it, which I've always regretted. Yes, maps are helpful, but then again, maps are included in the game...

And they overlooked the existence of Mr. Internet.

When I played Fallout 3 I did so without a strategy guide, except for the occasional foray onto the internet to check how to do something that I didn't want potentially screwing my game up for the long term. At that time, the Internet didn't have very much information, because the game was brand new. And I have to say, I'm glad that was so. It definitely made me enjoy my experience with the game a whole lot more. A lot more than my experience with Oblivion.

As to the case in hand, a woman totally anti-gaming refusing to buy it in order to not facilitate her husband's gaming, well, what the hell is she doing buying him Fallout 3? She ought to get him Scrabble or Monopoly or something like that that he'll get bored of after two days.

My girlfriend actually encourages me to play videogames, since she knows I'd rather spend time with her, and most of the time if she asks me to stop so we can do something, I will.

I live on my own and I support my gaming habits with my own money ... However in the past my parents have always been pretty cool with me playing games, but then again my "addiction" only kicked in when I could afford it myself.

About girlfriends none of my previous was really positive about it, including one I lived with for 3 years who made an effort to be ok with it, but it always proved to be against her nature to allow me to enjoy games in peace ...

I still long for the gamer girlfriend :(

My girlfriend is pretty good about games. She really doesn't like playing them (though I can get her to play Rock Band after a few drinks), but she likes watching them if there's a good story going on and she likes giving me suggestions on what to do. I don't think she's ever complained about me playing so I guess that makes me lucky.

Watching me play Resident Evil 4 scared the hell out of her. If a villager started to get close to me, she would yell, "SHOTGUN! SHOTGUN!" Good times :)

There are people who don't want others to be happy. They just want constant attention. Luckily my boyfriend is as bad as me. He just hints that he'd quite like some attention, every now and then.

If your computer has speakers, just put on some music they wouldn't like. Even if you hate it to, it's worth it to not deal with them.

My friend's girlfriend's father used to play a lot of games and somehow she associated the sound and visual as being a relaxant. Now, whenever she is stressed or sad, she asks him to play Call of Duty 4. I wish some day I find a super hot girl friend who lets me relax her by shooting nazis...some dudes have all the luck...
