That last panel is kind of a joke....

Man, she has a lot of space within her walls. Rats can barely fit two abreast in my drywall.

dymne thats sad, still, it got me thinking how many of these rats have been with her. In any case good bye Suchong and good luck Suchong #2

Well... this took a bit of a left turn from the expected arc...

Truly a masterpiece Rydell
we shall call this arc: A Suchong of Mice and Fire.

Wow the cult of Erin. Also the torch has been passed.

Well, I sure hope someone picks up that phone...'CUZZ I FUCKING CALLED IT!! ^_^

You had to do this the day one of my mice died

I worry about Erin that it wouldn't occur to her at some point that her rat is impossibly old... at the same time, I like the idea that the rats care so much to go through all of this.

So in other words she will never learn how it is to lose someone you truly love.
She will learn this lesson with the hard way.

Well without Erin they'd have a much harder time out on the street with the alley cats.

Anyway, I have a 21 year old cat, so this arc got to me a bit. Sadly, I don't think Pumpkin has a secret society that worships me. That's not really a cats style.

We just said goodbye to out pet rat of three years last week. Yup, this arc was a bit difficult to read.

I got a big Secret of Nimh vibe from this arc...

Not that its a bad thing...

Also, I want Skittles.

So she doesn't think its odd that her rat pet has a life span the same as her?

Oh. I didn't think of that, but yeah it does kind of remind me of Nimh.

Also Skittles are great!

Then again, who hasn't?

Although in this case, Suchong didn't get an entire town to mourn his loss, although he more than deserves that kind of treatment.

Whole cities, states, countries and even continents should mourn the loss of our favorite fancy rat.

Believe you, you've tried?

They've got the procedure down. It's gotta be at least Suchong #5.

The Suchong is dead! Long Live The Suchong!

DTWolfwood:

This is Erin we're talking about. She's probably put no thought into it at all.

Urgh76:

I don't think I've watched Recess at any age.

It makes me feel a bit sad that Erin doesn't know her pet well enough (or pay enough attention to him) to notice when he's been swapped. :/

She feeds her rats Skittles. This has to be Suchong #17 by now.

So was it one of Suchongs kids who succeeded him, he was a father after all, or will he now retire and live out his days along side his family?

Yep, I'm definitely getting a "Secret of Nimh"/"Redwall" vibe here.

And now I can't help but thing of my own pets, including my late cat Arthur and his brother Merlin.

...Yea, Arthur and Merlin. I was four when I named them, what do you want from me?!

Why are you APOLOGIZING? This was a brilliant little story arc. I feel a bit more invested in this comic now. Is that a bad thing?

Thank you for taking chances. Don't stop. No one is going to eat you.

I hate to nitpick, but that should be "of Mice and Fire."

Don' worry Cory, this mini arc was a fine addition to Erin's story, BUT I must stress that I DO expect this to return one way or another in the future. Since you know the rule of writing something into a story "If you made it then you have to use it."... Okay so that's MY rule but it should still stand it's ground just because it wasn't made by a guy decades ago. :p

Ummm... just a question, but did you miss the previous page where the old Suchong fell over, everyone seemed sad and got a painting of himself put on the wall? That KINDA implies that he died. :(

What exactly is new Suchong getting painted with? Magical paint? Strange, rat-made chemicals? Normal paint shouldn't burn like that.

What's the exclamation mark for?

Erin's eyes in that last panel... TOO CUTE!!!

Well, remember, Erin isn't exactly the brightest of bulbs, but I think the mere presence of a Suchong is enough to keep her grounded.

As sad as that may be, I knew parents who've replaced dead hamsters/frogs, ect. so their kids wouldn't be heart broken. They search in advance once they know the signs of a pet dying and find the 'match' looking very similar. Kids might pick up, but most of the time they will not if it's simple as say, a frog.

OT: Huh.. well I should feel sad but maybe this rat will act just like the other one. Still sad though Erin couldn't tell lol.

That's a bit silly. Kids have to experience grief at some point.

When my first hamster died (I was 9 years old at the time) my mum used it as an opportunity to talk to me about death. She helped me wrap up the hamster (her name was Harriety) and put her in a cardboard box while my dad dug a grave. I even wrote a goodbye letter to Harriety and put it in the box with her. I don't remember what I wrote, except that I hoped she'd had a happy life. Then we buried her. My mum told me it was OK if I wanted a bit of time to myself to cry. So I sat on my own next to the grave in the garden and I had a little cry.

Looking back, I really admire my mother for how she handled that.

You know what, one thing that confuses me is that if there are tons of Rats in line for becoming the next Suchong and the intelligence of keeping the masquerade up...why not just simply hide the Skittles? I mean if they're dieing at such a rapid pace because of the consumption of skittles, wouldn't it make sense for them to avoid eating them in the first place...

...Unless there's some sort of secret agenda with the elders, possibly involving keeping the worthwhile mates in circulation and giving the "blessing" of being the next Suchong as a way of getting rid of them to a chocolate death? Only other option is that they avoid telling them that chocolate is poisonous to ensure that Suchong always looks as young as he is, due to more young rats to take his place?

EDIT: Dear god, what if he always looked that young because the rat was replaced on a weekly basis, we could be on Suchong Two-Hundred-And-Six by now.

and so, generation upon generation, many ancestors later, all the rats died in the fire that will occur in the next story advancement :\

no but seriously, i like the idea of generation upon generation of rats succeeding each other, and vieing for the position of... um...

Knight of the Skittle?

a pity he couldn't include the trials page he had in mind.

And there was also kinda the funeral pyre, directly mentioned in the notes of the 3rd strip; very respectful of the rats.

Great, great arc, connects with anyone who has ever lost a pet, as well as further characterizing the rats as one of the most kind hearted and noble creatures in the whole comic.

Also I imagine this is only Suchong #2 seeing there was only one picture on the wall behind the Erin Shrine.

Considering the world's oldest cat was 36, Pumpkin could live another 15 years, and for it's sake and yours I hope it does.
