Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Watch Video

Sailing was already the best part of AC3 so I'm kinda glad they made a game about it.

Edit : Wait did Yahtzee get himself banned?

This series is yet another example of neither the fans nor the Publishers/Developers knowing when a franchise needs to be laid to rest.

His join date is 1969 and the ban link leads to a site for teen girls. I have no idea what's going on.

Might pick this up soon, I liked the sailing in AC3. The rest of the game, not so much.

Those bloody tailing missions, i swear every story mission started with a tailing prod. In fact i am even stuck on a particular one right now. Fuck you tails! And yes i mean that friend of sonic too, with his whiny, high maintenance bullshit!
Gimme that stapler!

Here, have a youtube link in case you (like me) have never seen the Bittersweet Symphony music video and had no clue what Yahtzee was talking about:

Good to see everyone knows what Ubisoft is doing with the Assassin's creed franchise. They don't care about the story, the plot, the narrative, or resolution. They just plan to milk it until the milk runs dry and then maybe they will reboot it or something.

It's like the video games version of Lost.

Uhhh, ok, if you haven't played AC3 yet, DO NOT WATCH THIS. At least warn people before you spoil the fuck out of something THAT major, Jesus Christ...

Ok I am confused, is this some kind of a hidden joke (with the banned link to a girl website with similar layout with the Escapist Magazine)?

Okay... So Yahtzee's lost his name and been permabanned for... a link to some kind of relationship advice forum? What the heck...? It's not even April Fool's day.

Me neither... The site seems vaguely similar to the Escapist, so I'm guessing it's not a hack... Clicking on the Profile Pic redirected me to myself, and his post count is zero. *shrugs*

Right. ANYWAY. AC4.
I'll probably pick it up at some point and treat it like a standalone game, since I enjoyed the sailing in AC3 (and Wind Waker...), but I'm getting increasingly tired of the series main plot (which rather lost it's way after the end of Brotherhood). So, Pirates!

I guess it's a good thing that the main character isn't really an Assassin then.

Yeah, this franchise is a huge cash cow at this point, but generally the entries are well crafted & polished, running through historical locations and stuff is consistently fun and the campaign always gives you bang for the buck. I guess my point is... well, good, keep 'em coming, please.

They're making a movie out of the first game soon so we can expect the same deal all over... in the big screen.

This is why I stopped playing at Revelations; this series just keeps going on and on with nothing particularly coherent to add. You know they only churned Black Flag out because people liked that one new element they added in 3, so it's not like Ubisoft even have a long term plan for this series.

Oh god... seriously? Now we'll get a game based on a movie based on a game.

It's Silent Hill: Homecoming all over again.

Why stop there, how about a tv show, comic books, novels, trading card game, a cartoon, an anime, a breakfast cereal, sport wear, action figures, deodorant line, brand of kitchen knives, and a boy band?

Edit: PS love the avatar, Zim 4tw.

Might be a future test version by Jim Sterling.

Great show, odd post.

:( It's kind of sad how assassin's creed pretty much can never end.

I understand why they want it that way and it does mean they can keep telling stories, but it also means they can't ever have anything be "final" at the end. Witch means we have almost no chance of getting closure.

Maybe they can though. After all. Metal Gear has been going on for even longer, had an end with "final closure", and still has games coming out. Some from the main story, and some branching out.

That said, with how frequently they want to release AC games, I'm kind of worried about how long they can keep doing that until they run out of ideas for new things to do with it.

I guess we at least don't have to wait too long to find out.

Looks like Mud or Kross is having a little too much fun today XD

OT: I'm so done with AssCreed at this point. That line graph joke isn't nearly as funny when you know it's actually real :(

What the hell happened to Yahtzee?

Yahtzee's account seems fine here, so I'm guessing this is a joke using a one-time throwaway account. Anyhow, good video as always.

Don't be, AC4 is really fun, and surprisingly non iterative for a series that's on its 5th game. "AssCreed" is nothing more than a recognizable brand name by now, they just make cool shit and call them AC. I'm fine with that, whatever, as long as the end result is good.

Kenway's Welsh?... LOAD THE CANNONS WITH CHEESE TOASTIES MEN! That will distract him, HAR HAR HAR, God save the queen.

I disagree on the line graph, not that I expect it was meant to be accurate. I'd say Revelations was a down and 3 was an up, but not the high point.

Tails I can deal with. just please answer me this: Are there any escort quests?

Wait, is Yahtzee being serious about the premise being about an evil video game company run by the Templars?

*checks Wikipedia*

Holy shit. My respect for whoever's been stuck writing these games just went up a notch.

Once again, the review goes out before the steam version is even available, and I find myself hesitating... for 5 seconds. Hurray for delayed PC version !!!

Loved the Blackadder II reference he dropped into the credits. "Favours? What do you mean? Delivering Messages, sewing on buttons that kind of thing?"

So...if people still havent finished the 3rd Ass, why exactly would they want to know anything about games further on in the series? Kinda hard to talk about them without watching out for a bunch of story spoilers, no?

Someone obviously never grew up in the 90's, never knew who The Verve were, had no idea who Richard Ashcroft was, and never listened to the album 'Urban Hymns'.

Oh, Yahtzee... You're making it sound like these open-world sandbox games are deliberately making their main campaigns longer just to make you think you're not playing any of the side missions, when in actually you are... (Reminds me of Sonic 06...)

Anyway, I would play AC4 just for the pirate sailing, but then that defeats the already defeated purpose of an assassin-based game... I'll guess I'll wait until the story spin-off game comes out where you do NOTHING but sailing the "seven seas" as a pirate... (or would that feel more like Sid Meier's Pirates?)

captcha: Start saving today
I'm already doing that... by waiting until the price goes down enough to even want to buy this game in the first place...

Wow... 22 comments and not a single person talking about the Heath Ledger reference?

I'm honestly shocked.

It's AC4, common sense should dictate not to watch it if you want to know what happened in AC3. No spoiler warning needed unless he's spoiling AC4 story.

There you go video game developers, if you wanna impress Yahtzee (and I know you all do) then just add some sailing as part of the main plot and he'll be amused enough to give your game a positive review. Well, positive for Yahtzee standards anyway.

As if the story of Desmond was ever of any relevance :p
I doubt they had any plan how to continue that story after AC1 was finished after nor the 2nd and Brotherhood, because it certainly feels that way. Ramdom.
Just take the game for what it is. Being an assassin in a historical background and killing people.

I do not remember any such quests. So thats alright :)

I'm still hoping for more sailing focused Assassin's Creed as I really loved it in this game. How about during the Napoleonic wars? Maybe in the Mediterranean? (In other words: give me Master and Commander: The Game :D)
