5 hours in a week is a minimum? I i can fill that quota in the morning...
I'd be a mindless machine ripping through the opposition !

hahaha Well, some people work a ton and I didn't want people to feel left out or get kicked if they didn't have the ability to play a lot but still wanted to participate. I'm an equal opportunity gamer :)

Spinwhiz, is that you in your avatar? If so, were you Wilson from Home Improvement?

Yes, that is me...you can also see me in The Escapist Show :) I actually tried out for Wilson but I wasn't old enough to look "wise" but I was tall enough.

That wouldn't do much good, seeing as we never see Wilson mouth. I believe you would have been a fine Wilson.

Why thank you...thank you very much! I tried to tell them the same thing as I was escorted out of the studio. :)

That Dude With A Face:
Any idea what kind of connection speed is required? Just want to make sure my connection is up to it before I sign up.

I'll bring that up as well.

EDIT: Also, why does the connections comment make me fear that not playing enough will result in a bunch of mafia thugs on my doorstep?

Excellent! Then there is always hope that someone (Mostly likely someone who joins today to get a key) will be booted and the REAL Escapists will get in there and rock some socks!

I declare post-countism on you good sir. You insinuate that someone who has a low post count is a trouble maker. *takes white glove from pocket and slaps you in the face* I trust you have learnt your lesson?

Ahh, I didn't say low post count = trouble maker!
I meant the people who join JUST for contests. They have a much higher chance of being trouble makers. People who want to be a part of the community, contests or not, have less of a chance since it would reflect badly on them in said community (Which they want to be a part of)! While the contest whores don't care, they just want to win contests.

I'm with you on this, Tea. It's already annoying enough when those types of jackasses win contests, but this is something completely different. If our team ends up being a bunch of "randoms" that signed up just for this I'm going on a rampage.

You won't have to worry about that. We have a staff for a reason :)

Oh, thank you? Don't worry about people causing problems. They won't be around long enough to be worried about. I DO however want people that HAVE played to help those who HAVEN'T played before. Our community helps others, not rips them down.

Bah, when I try and join the game on either of the servers, the game crashes exactly just after having finished loading the Sanctuary. Will try and see what happens if I play as Terran.

EDIT: I can't get in there either... My computer hates me.

Strange, happened to me as well, although I thinks it's due to this computer terrible graphics card not being able to handle the game, or maybe the game connection was bad.

With this in mind I now pose a question, If we are one of the people to get a key, but we can't play the game, is there any way to give up the key and not get banned? since I signed up for the key before checking if the game will run on this computer with the graphics card I have.

I used to play PS, long time ago. Just for kicks admittedly. I was playing on a 5MB connection at the time, barely any lag. Did spike though.

Just a question, should I be selected will being on the VC be required?

So is this game Planetside more like World of warcraft or the Savage series?

I understand the plot and three factions but what kind of mechanics does the game use since it is a MMOFPS. I know it will be random but if ya don't know the game you might as well be a duck from duck hunt.

I wish good luck to the Escapist and hope that we shall win this war.

Combined, ready to serve his glorious leaders, if the need arises.

Basically it's a really good mixture of FPS & RPG,
The combat system is entirly an FPS system, simply a cone of fire and uses the standard FPS features. How ever each person you kill gives you Exp, once you get enough you gain a rank. Each rank you gain grants you one "Certification points" these certs can be used to Certifie you to use certain tech, such as different vehicles, Weapons, skills and Armour. You can never have enough certs to certifie yourself to use every thing in the game, so you often have to rely on your team mates, for example; If you are a highly skilled Hacker in game you can easily hack into enemy vehicles, door locks and bases, though since your mainly certified to be a hacker if you take some serious damage you will have to find a team medic to heal you (if you don't have some meds on you).

There are no Combat NPCs in the game, so it's PVP.
Considering you use to be able to get around 300vs300vs300 players in one area battles get pretty long and extreamly fun.

I'm a 6 year terran republic veteran killwhore (been here since release, past times include: killing NC and VS in mass quantities with the mini chain gun), and I'm stoked that the escapist picked the TR as their empire. Perfect match if you ask me.

Great idea, glad to see people still care about planetside. Thanks escapist!

Oh goodness me, Planetside! Joy and exhuberance!

I played it for a while about two years ago. Trucks were driven. Good times were had.

The game plays like Teamfortress 2 or any other FPS but involves as much as 200-300 players at a time. Battles can range from small "spec ops" elite squads running together to gigantic battles with people running around everywhere. Planetside is known to be one of the few games out there where skill and tactics play a tremendous roll on the outcome. You'll notice the clear difference between a noob and an elite player, despite the fact that they both have pretty much the same acess to the same weapons.

That should be coming over from SOE shortly. I sent them a shortlist of questions.

Will there be a thread that actively follows the stats of the contest?

I'm rotting for the escapist, but I'm not gonna enter the contest. I just don't want to take on a bit more responsibility.

What is this wikipedia you speak of? :) The only wikipedia I know of seems to have folded in on itself as a place where information is shared and now controlled by "volunteers" who seem to be the judge, jury and executioner on every single post and are normally wrong.

Your Wikipedia sounds better. Maybe I should spell it with a W instead of a w?

EDIT: No, I'm not bitter, just absolutely disgusted.

Does that mean we can have special ops squads? If so I think that groups name should be "The Running Pitts". Dedicating all the times good old Russ had to run in the Escapist show.

What kind of squad names do you think we should call our groups in this fun competition?

EDIT

Out of curiosity, how much does this cost per month?

Well, the passes are free for one month. Not sure about it after that.

I need to get into this thing. I used to play Planetside for a few years, then it quickly died... it'd be great to get back into it with this. Hope I get in >:D

Those of you examining the specs will notice Vista is not included. This does not immediately mean you cannot play if you are using Vista, but you may have to do some fancy footwork to get things going. Or it might work immediately. Welcome to Vista, Schroedinger Edition.

For those that might need it, some tips to get it working with Vista if it gives you problems:
Go here first, and scroll down to "Issues with Windows Vista".

Additional, and more advanced, options are here, mostly in the first post, but there's other reported tricks scattered through the various pages.

(I will also be occassionally crossing my fingers for you, in case that works. Can't cross them all the time, otherwise agkdsahibn iar ghnrg sajhgdho, and nobody wants that.)

Signed up and ready to rock and roll, played planetside years ago, had a maxed out 25/5 NC on Werner (WolfLordAndy) and oh how I loved the game.

Take it we'll be on one of the US based servers? or is it a totally new server for the event? And I'm guessing we'll be creating an outfit (guild) just for the 75 people that are chosen?

Oh, and someone mentioned it earlier... yes PS has build in voice comms, but they're a giant pile of poo and not worth using, TS/Vent all the way.
