The Big Picture: E3-mageddon: Crossover

Holy shit that was the third most fuck awful thing I've ever seen in my life. I sincerely and without hyperbole cannot think of one good thing to say about whatever the hell it is I just saw. I won't even say, with bitter sarcasm, "It ended" because that means it started at one point.

This video is failure taken physical form. The fact that a person with so little self awareness as to share something like this exist, makes me weep for the human race. There is no doubt in my mind that a flash player crash would have been a genuine improvement. This video was not made it was committed, it was not shown it was inflicted; I guess what I'm trying to say is...

Anti-thinker is basically what a lot of people on the internet assume call of duty players are like.

I don't know why bob still thinks this "Parody" is funny. It's a bad stereotype at best.

So, Bob, can we assume that Overthinker MAY in fact be coming to the escapist? If so, I welcome that change because that'd be pretty fun and help keep everything under one roof (metaphorically speaking).

This is the internet, which means that they probably won't and instead just complain about how they don't like the sketches. And look, that is exactly what happened. Oh internet, you never fail to disappoint me.

Perhaps that's because it fails as a parody and feels too much like someones (Bob's) deep seated hatred and resentment for a group of people.
It's like when Kevin Smith used Clerks 2 to have characters moan about how he personally didn't like lord of the rings (or clerks the animated series where he has a go at Seth McFarlane) your basically just listening to the persons one sided argument for why something sucks and you should feel bad for liking that thing

Scrumpmonkey:
He was basically just there to tell people they should feel bad for owning a penis and being white in the most lazy, broadly drawn and superior way possible. Because, you know, that makes you a terrible person now.

Is it wrong that I feel bad about everything but being white and having a penis?

To me this felt like a montage of everything i think is outdated and bad about the internet game 'critic' video genre. It's that grandstanding, horribly forced and overly preachy production that belongs with the TGWTG affiliates back in 2008. Playing multiple characters in your own lecture fantasy where everyone bows before your almighty options and taste all whilst fumbling around at acting, writing, shooting and adding effects.

It's nice to see there's people who can say the things that I wanted to say better than me.

Yes, the forced TGWTG humor is strong with this one. It's what made me ditch that channel all together. Except for when Lindsay decides to review anything.

Did I just do drugs? What was with Cobra Slaughter there?

Didnt make it to the end of that or even half way through. People doing stupid voices and be-littling themselves just isnt funny or smart. Which is a shame since one of the things I like about the big picture is that its (normally) funny and smart.

Look I know its E3 and you probally threw that together in 10 minutes so you could go to the show, but it shows and sucks.

Just this. I really enjoy The Big Picture and was hoping to watch another episode of it today. Instead we got... this. Just a sketch about E3 and nothing else. Nothing informative, nothing insightful and, especially, nothing funny. MovieBob should play to his strengths rather that try and fail at TGWTG humour - I usually skip the little sketches in the Nostalgia Critic reviews anyway.

Antithinker: While macho power fantasies have been a dime a dozen in gaming since its very creation (hell, just look at Contra and Metal Gear), ...

Metal Gear? What? Yeah, nothing gets the testosterone pumping like being lectured for 10 minutes about how governments are failing their citizens by improperly disposing of nuclear waste! OH YEAH!

Well bob why donīt you just never do that again, ever.

Are you sure the Anti-Thinker isn't one of the three little pigs? Because he certainly built a house of straw!

*cricket chirps*

...Well, I thought that was clever...

Bullshit. The mechanics and method may be different, but the "one man defeats a massive army" trope stays the same, even if it involves slipping past them rather than through them.

Yeah, considering that each one has gotten more esoteric, goofy, political, and melodramatic, if you were primarily playing them as a macho power fantasy, I'm fairly certain you were doing it wrong.

Yeah... there's nothing manly or macho about this:

I had a sneaking suspicion this wouldn't play to the Escapist crowd. I was right.

Its hard to put those things into words without sounding overly personal or critical but this is a genre of internet video that really rubs me the wrong way because it's sole intent is to shove the point of view of a person down your throat. It overrides the content and the video producer places overriding faith in themselves as a video maker as an actor, effects producer but also to make a speech heartfelt commentator. You can't sound sincere whilst flipping someone off.

On the issue of Parody; bad, mean spirited and poorly thought through parody is still bad. "It's meant to be parody" is not a catch all defense of something used to mock someone.Maybe Bob should have a closer look at the Anti-thinker and the similarities between his thinly veiled attack rant character and what his does himself. He's a white suburban male who states his strong, he feels completely justified, opinions to an audience he thinks needs to hear it. His opinions can be challenged by no one and he is secure enough in what he thinks is right to call out all those who dare to disagree with his world view. He is basically being a different version of that character, brashly ranting in the face of those who's world view does not gel with him. I bet if Antithinker was the lead character of a show he would do the same thing with "Social justice man" and it would basically be the same bit. Trotting out a character to go "I smell bad and everything is represent is wrong and poopy and poo and **makes fart noises with mouth**" makes people lose respect for the point you are trying to make on any side of a debate.

I've been aware of the Game Overthinker for a long time. I don't like it so i don't watch it. I don't complain about it either... because i don't watch it. The thing you did with the literal 'straw man' character has been mentioned already. It's not clever it just comes off like you are beating up your high-school bullies inside your own head. You could have just had him shout "I'm right, you're wrong, you all suck! Hahaha! You mad?! Hahaha!" and it would have been less cringe-worthy and insipid then attempting to use 1st year sociology course language to gleefully tear down all those people you've formed inside your own mind.

It's very rare i can say piece of media comes across to me as a negative reflection of it's creator's mental space but after watching this a feel a little more uncomfortable with Bob's world view in general. It's uncomfortably bitter and angry. You have a right to disagree with people but it seems to be you don't feel like many gamers have a right to exist.

Uriel_Hayabusa:
I don't follow The Game Overthinker so I wonder: is this "Antithinker" basically meant to be Bob's swipe at so-called "dudebros" (ie. the generalized image of Call of Duty fans by people who hate the franchise) and nothing else?

Yes. Yes he is.

no
i started the video, hoping against hope that it was not what i thought it would be, made it till the GO logo.
i like bobs stuff on the escapist but when he talks about games he is usually just so wrong (remember episode about how cartridges should make a return and about a million about how pc gaming is dying)

Wow, we're going right to MGS4? The game where Snake and his male life partner adopt a daughter together? The one where chronic back pain is a gameplay mechanic? Hey, if that's what passes as a macho power fantasy for you, I think that's very progressive. More power to you.

To be fair to bob, at the time he stated PC gaming was dying, PC gaming was very much in trouble. Few would have predicted it would have come back as strong as it has.

I'm gonna assume that you needed time to get E3 stuff together and so you rushed this out to fill the slot for two shows.

It' like the Avengers movie, but for MovieBob stuff. xD

Well, that one last part of the Avengers where they're all just eating shawarma. ;D

Nice to have it end on a high note. I really liked the Sunset Overdrive. It really looks like great fun. :)
Shame I won't be able to play it. xD

Oh well. I look forward to Dragon age: Inquisition as well. There may be more. I've yet to see everything they're showing off.

To go off on more of a tangent, i think the whole image of the mainstream gamer is mainly a fabrication of the games industry its self. I think pinning the blame for the creative flaws of the industry on the consumer and somehow assume it's somehow their fault is the opposite of what we should be doing. E3 is so toxic because it is an industry event. If you look at something like PAX, a community event, it's so much better. The corporate side of the industry are the ones pushing this narrow agenda.

Look at actual game trends. The traditional console industry is relatively flat considering gaming has really become part of mainstream culture and life now. In contrast there has been an explosion of games like "The Binding of Isac" (and game Nintendo refused to release on their platforms) selling millions of units bucking the conventional ideas of success. Indie is big because the industry is being seen as creatively failing the community. People play CoD because it is there, because their friends have it, because it pumps millions in marketing. It's not because they are this mythical woman hating, narrow minded mainstream gamer the likes of EA and Activision like to pluck out of focus groups. Gaming is a VERY broad church and gamers are more progressive, more open to new ideas and much better people than the industry gives them credit for being.

Look at what happened to "Game Jam". Somewhere someone pulled out this caricature of what gamers are and what they want and it caused so much push-back the project failed. Ultimately it is the AAA industry that is in charge of their content and right now they are failing to move forward.

varmintx:

I'm wondering what the right crowd would be. Irate Gamer fans might enjoy the humour but they would defineately hate the commentary, but maybe it would work with the TGWTG crowd? If Blockbuster Buster can be a thing GO should be able to gain a decent amount of popularity on a site like that. The weird thing is that the sketches relies too much on nostalgia to be understood by children, but at the same time i think children would be more entertained since it has a bit of that silly saturday morning cartoon feel to it. But the commentary is directed towards older people and are also drenched in 90s nostalgia, so it has got to be a very narrow segment that would enjoy the entire package.

But kudos to Bob to be so passionate about his show, i don't like GO, but i admire that he stays true to his vision no matter how much people dismiss it.

NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY, NO MANS SKY...

*Ahem* Sorry for that eye sore, but yeah, definitely Sony & Nintendo didn't dissapoint, now I really want a Wii U and almost everything Sony showed on their conference looked AWESOME, especially a certain game (dunno wich one... >.>), althought looking great, I still won't go out rushing for a PS4... yet, it's coming to PC, so yeah, no PS4 for me yet.

And indies, they never fail to impress. Happy E3-ing everybody!.

Please don't do this next year, Bob. I like to watch some Game Overthinker from time to time, but with those it's usually possible to skip all the "comedic" bits with the characters and get right to your thoughts. I don't always agree with or respect your opinion on something, but I think the format of Big Picture is much better than that of Game Overthinker when it comes to getting to the point. I didn't enjoy this combination.

(Also, I was really happy about Nintendo's showing and very pleased that Microsoft showed nothing but games. This was a good E3.)

JoJo:

Bindal:

Or encourage to never bother with it. Because that was the result for me - not want to watch any of it. EVER! (Including the mayority of this episode)

Yeah, same. Sorry Bob, I could tell you put a lot of effort into this but for someone who has never seen your other show today's episode just seemed forced and unfunny for the most part, besides taking ages to get going, shame because the minute or so of actual commentary was quite interesting and I usually really enjoy the Big Picture.

Yeah, this.

I kinda enjoyed the actual commentary part, but overall this was really cringeworthy. I honestly felt kind of embarrassed watching it.

I'm surprised at how genuinely disappointed I feel right now, but I guess that just goes to show how much I usually like and look forward to The Big Picture, so maybe that's a positive.

I've been curious about the GameOverthinker for a while. Didn't know anything about it really, but I definitely wasn't expecting... that. Definitely won't be checking it out in future, sorry Bob :/

Ohlookit'sMatty:

-M

Honestly, that bit was all but lockstep with the attitude/message I've been getting from the show lately, so... meh?

Also: Self-depreciating humour (and that is the best case scenario, and none of the options are graceful at all) doesn't work if the character is aware of the fact, and a lazy attempt to cross the line twice doesn't count as either being witty or metahumour.

Well that was weird. I never bothered to watch Game Overthinker. I tried it 1 time and was like 'oh its just some fat sweaty guy in his pants talkin about games'. It was probly just an unfortunate choice of episode.

Please, never do this again.

Well, the was... funny at first, until I heard Retrothinker and Antithinker speak. Those two sound like a couple of Freshmen-year Sociology courses personified. The ones that pin all the ills of the world on ALL heterosexual Caucasian human males throughout all time and space. Speaking as a Heterosexual Caucasian Human Male born in 1984, I find that line of thought insulting, as if everything wrong in the world is personally MY FAULT, when the worst stuff happened before I was born! In the grand scheme of things, I just got here! So Bob, please, DON'T DO THIS AGAIN!

Right, and which "Group of people" might that be? This isn't exactly the civil rights movement here people, and I should hope that there isn't a single person who actually Thinks the x-box Live trashtalk is "ok" and Worth defending.

The fact that people look at this and go "Bob hates people for liking something he doesn't" says a whole lot more about THEIR level of maturity than it does his. Bob doesn't like certain trends in video-games and what they say about the gaming Community as a whole, big fucking deal. I don't Think that is an excuse for people to go completely blind and miss the obvious, that Bob's characters are extremely broad stereotypes played up for Comedy. Yet people still blow it up as if he took the constitution and burned it.

MrBaskerville:
Itīs a trap, itīs a Game Overthinker episode in disguise, storysegments and everything! Not exactly what i was hoping for. Iīm sorry, this was pretty awful and hard to sit through for me. Would have prefered a standard Big Picture episode, looking forward to the post-E3 video.

I was beginning to think I was the only one cringing.

That being said, Anti-Thinker had the odd gem... I do like making fun of bros though....

OT No Man's Sky looks like the sort of game that will take hours of my life away.
Dog fighting, space and dinosaurs. Why hasn't this happened sooner?

R6 could be decent to.

Call me a spoil sport but I found this very cringe inducing. I couldn't make it through the video.
