The Big Lie of Brandon Crisp

A CBC special report on the death of Brandon Crisp attempts to showcase the horror of videogame obsession, but reveals a completely different kind of horror in the process.

Is it not the job of professional news outlets to weave half-truths and lie, spread innuendo and play to stereotypes of sub-cultures to better pander to the members of the audience who want to believe that they are part of the mainstream cultural elite now that bloggers and citizen jornalists are making much of their industry obsolete? oh, sorry. I was thinking of Internet Trolls.
At least she didn't make it seem like all videogamers cosplay (24/7 or otherwise) or that they all think they are reincarnations of videogame characters whom other gamers believe they are married to.

What can you say? Videogames, the internet, computers, they're destroying TV. More and more people are choosing to pick up a controller or a keyboard rather than the remote and the TV networks are hurting because of it. Anything they can do to paint this competitor for the attention of brain-dead drooling couchspawn in a negative light is a good thing for TV. Heavens forbid that they should have to change their business model to remain competitive. Smear campaigns are cheaper.

Yeesh, makes the Daily Mail sound like rank amateurs.

I suppose this stems from the insecurity that computers and games are eating TV ratings alive in a slow but unstoppable manner.
Ah well, it reflects worse on them than the gaming industry (to me at least).

Andy Chalk wonders why the fifth estate didn't do an in-depth report about parents who let their young teenage children play M-rated videogames unsupervised in their bedrooms.

Because if they did that, they would have to blame the parents, not some faceless evil corpartion, just like listening to metal causes kids to be satinist, watching TV rots the brain and the parents can do nothing about it!!!!

Not like there kids will allow them to turn off the TV, stereo, or take that gaming systems, people are stupid, plain and simple

What a bunch of BS. This is so very biased and half assed. Makes me sick.

CBC should just stick to episodes of The Mercer Report, This Hour has 22 Minutes, the glory days of Red Green and Air Farce, and Peter Mansbridge. Their jokes are funnier.

Great article, but I wish you would've mentioned the fact that the CBC is canadas publicly funded TV channel, and it is us Canadian taxpayers who are literally paying for this garbage. It is also well known that the CBC panders to the government of the moment (currently the conservatives) to ensure more funding, which could explain the bias in this "news" story. Personally, I think we should outlaw trees :P

This... this is just... Ugh.

I think I'm gonna have an aneurysm from too much STUPID.

Wow, this makes me seem smart!
Surely there is some kind of organisation designed to stop this amateur bullshit from being shown.

No, it's more like NBC, if NBC were owned by the federal government. Just a few years ago the CBC was brutally liberal (when the liberals were in power). I do have to clarify that conservative in canada is still a little left of center.

Done, i actually leave them a comment just so they know what i thought of that piece of crap they call journalism.
Itīs because of things like that the we gamers are looked upon, for all the bad reasons.

Be glad our media isn't wise to the trick of demonizing the latest thing. To be honest, it always staggers me that people of the last generation forget that their own parents demonized them too. From Elvis and his "pornographic hip swaying" to rock & roll, its just one depressing cycle of a) get demonized, b) forget your interest was ever demonized, c) demonize whatever the next generation are into.

On the plus side, at least its pretty likely they'll fail - just as Elvis, Rock & roll, etc, are all thought laughably tame today.

Also, the government report on video games here was written by someone who knew what she was talking about and advised parents to supervise but encourage. Seriously, its perhaps the only good thing the UK government has done in a long time.

I'm going to watch this now. I don't think it's fair to comment on the material second hand, how would I be any different from them otherwise. I will comment a little on a review I've glanced at on the programme:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090306.ARYAN06/TPStory/TPEntertainment/Television/

From some of what I've read here it does seem like it's using Brandon's tragic accident to lead into a case demonising online gaming and gaming in general.

I find it odd that they suggest that COD4 and GTA IV are solely about killing targets. While that is a lot of the core gameplay it ignores the narrative. GTA IV is the story of an immigrant's descent into an urban underground criminal network. COD4 is the story of the actions taken in war, it looks at the struggles, the bonds, the tension, the split second decisions and the horrifying acts involved. Though it wraps it up in a 24 style action package, it doesn't coat over the grittier aspects.

Not this shit again! I still say that the parents of Brandon Crisp were lying about his "obsession" with gaming to cover their own arses. This is one of the shoddiest peices of news broadcasting I've ever seen and I've seen the Jack Thompson news report after the Virginia Tech massacre! When our parents where our ages I'm sure that their parents hated what they liked, but they still did it anyway. And now they expect us to stop it just because they cant handle their own kids!
EDIT:
Y'know after watching through the whole thing, the stupidity seems to increase with every minute so I've decided I'm going to make a video on this bullshit!

A quote from the great movie, South Park:

"We must blame them and cause a fuss,
before somebody thinks of blaming us!"

I watched about 5 minutes of it before I had to watch off. Its a ridiculous, and insanity bias already. I would write in and complain, but given this is one of those bias TV shows *cough-Jeremy Kyle-cough* I couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing and write a comment to complain. Add to that, they'll only claim something stupid like "Video game fans are whiny"

Well, I meant biased and overly conservative.

Actually, on reflection, its like watching a section of "Conservapedia: The Movie"

I 100% agree with you Maly. I remember when 5th used to be a good source for heartwarming stories but this time, they just ripped it all to shreds and lost 1 fans respect.

Does anyone ever thought about blaming Little Brandon for, well, being a moron?

It's tragic but I find it hard to sympathise with someone who ran away to 'show' his "awful" mother, who took away his beloved console because he was failing his grades. Please forgive me for not joining Brandon's "BAAAAAAW!" bandwagon, while more teenage girls are forced into child prostitution as they're running away from their abusive fathers or what you'd call REAL PROBLEMS.

"Where is this kind of Enquirer-level garbage journalism coming from? My guess is that it's the same sort of thickheadedness that led to the Fox News/Mass Effect debacle in early 2008: A belief that demonizing videogames is not only good for ratings but also the sort of indiscriminate headline-grabbing attack that can be made with impunity because videogamers are either kids or weirdos. We don't matter."

Did we watch the same programme? I saw a mostly fair and balanced piece on how games appear to be influencing children.

The fifth estate was clearly against gamng at this level. However, they spoke to the family and friends. They gave equal time and consideration to both sides of the argument. They spoke to a past gaming addict, phychologists, professional gamers, the CEO of major league gaming, an industry spokeswoman for the console manufacturers in Canada. Each of them was allowed to talk about games and their view on restricting content. They let them mention how the events that led to Brandon's death were unrelated to gaming which, like I said was acknowledged by the programme makers.

Unlike the "Sexbox Mass Effect" nonsense the programme took the time to examine the content of the game and interactions between players. The only glaring mistake was the talk of online competitive play with single player video in the background and the presenter confusing the Mastger Chief with a robot.

I think your pro-gaming attitude has led you to write this off as sensationalism when it is actually a decent and well made piece. While the programme makers were critical of gaming to this level I think overall it was presented with equal consideration given to all sides.

Well, isn't this just the kind of ignorant crap that removes my faith in humanity.

How in the He(double hockey sticks) does somebody think violence video games cause kids to act violent? Have they ever turned on a Tv show or even a news report? You have bodies laying in the streets and buildings on fire, not to mention movies in which people die horrible, horrible deaths...cough: saw...(you don't thinks kids don't sneak into those do you?). Why would a clearly animated or digital picture attached to a stick make kids any more violent then the orgy of war and sex already going on in our culture? Espically with parrents taking them to movies above then their recomended ratings.

True but games already have labels on them.... Telling parrents that their kid should not buy restricted games but then the parrents go ahead and buy them anyway, then get pissed that the game is so violent. It said it on the box before they bought it that the game was violent.

I could only make it through 20 minutes of that garbage. Andy Chalk is a brave man for watching the whole thing. The media constantly scapegoating tragic accidents on video games is getting old.

Didn't this kid fall out of a tree? Let's blame all trees! They can't even talk back! We can cut them all down just in case another kid one day climbs one and falls out of it!

I have absolutely no idea how videogames are even relevant to this story. It's a total bullshit media beat up.... Oh yeah, that's what the media do, so why is anyone surprised?

This is why I don't watch news shows.

Proving once again that parents failing on responsibilities will blame anything they can..hey at least now they can profit off their dead son like all self respecting parents would. :(

Sorry but is this news as thought was fact that U.S main media outlets blame video games for everything? Give if a few more generations then we won't have to hear about as all they doing is pandering to the 40+ demographic who still ignorant of our pastime and still think it for kids. Soon as those born in late 80's is their main target audience then will stop hearing all this scare scaremongering of other forms of media and entertainment other than TV as who here knows of anyone in 30's and below who hasn't played video games, regularly surf the net and social networking sites? Sure not all wise to take media outlets with a grain of salt and just lap it in but will always be the case but at least that percentage is gradually getting smaller.

why was he playing call of duty to begin with.

actually brandon seems to be all but forgotten, i know a girl who fell from a tree and broke her ass, literally. this people do suffer from a bad case of moron, but it would be like me getting blamed for her falling out of that tree because that day i called her a bitch. just like it was his own stupid idea to climb a tree therefore he should be blamed not a game unless it was "Super Awesome Tree Climb Time and How You Can Do It: The Game"

I just want to point out that watching that show got me riled up enough to post a comment on cbc's message board and when I got there I discovered that most of the messages were about how biased and wrong the show was, and not many of the people there actually took their bullshit arguments seriously.
