The New PSP Is Go! This Fall?

image

The oft-rumored new PlayStation Portable has a name and a release window, according to a report by 1UP.com.

Everyone seems to have a "secret source" for rumors about Sony's new PSP these days, but at least all the speculation is getting a bit more specific. 1UP.com's recent report, full of information gathered from "sources directly involved with the new system," is the most detailed set of rumors yet, revealing the potential name of the system, the nature of the hardware, and a possible launch window.

Now, "PSP2" would seem like a logical choice for a name, but Sony apparently seems to think that numbers are totally for squares. Instead of PSP2, 1UP ventures that Sony will be opting for the more spunky PSP Go!, though they say PSP Slide and PSP Flip were also tossed around.

"Slide" would certainly fit, because, as has been rumored before, the machine will have a screen that slides up to reveal buttons, a d-pad and an analog nub (or maybe a control panel that slides down, but you get the idea). There will not, according to 1UP's sources, be a second analog nub. No word of a touch screen, either.

As for the most popular rumor about the new PSP - that it won't have UMD and be totally digital distribution-oriented - 1UP's sources said that the system will come in two SKUs, with eight or 16 GB of internal flash memory and no, no UMD. For games, Sony is planning on having over 100 old and new PSP games available for download at launch, with Gran Turismo Mobile rumored as a launch title.

Sony will be announcing the system at E3 in June. It's planned for a September release in Japan and an October or November launch in the U.S. That's, of course, according to rumors.

And will never be released on Europe? :P

No. You don't get good things.

(The report just didn't say anything about Europe.)

No second analog nub? What?

Hence my reaction.

And a new PSP is as good as a new DS.

So wait if i'm reading this right it's going to operate entierly on downloads. Mabey i'm just old but I never get games or DLC through downloads.

People its still a rumour, and meh the DS and iPhone are too powerful atm.

Sony should really stick to managing their grill....... i mean console

Let the falme war BEGIN!

OT: The first one was a fail... Cept MonsterHunters with Xlink Kai... But no one knows what that is.

I could use a Bacon and Killzone Burger right about now.

I will be grateful when E3 comes around and finally sheds some light on all this. Frankly I have stated on more than one occasion on how this is a terrible idea for sony and how this is nothing more than some stupid rumor that refuses to die. The game lineup for 09-10 doesn't help this rumor either with the 80 billion games coming out on Sony's consoles. I will be the first to laugh when it's shown it was all a hoax. Cmon E3 come sooner!!

Good thing I held off on replacing my current PSP two weeks ago, when I thought that it had died. But it just needed to rest for 24 hours and regenerate it inner workings. Because the PSP has a regenerating health system.

To me it seems like Sony are just ripping ideas off the big N... again... DSi comes out and oh, look, Sony announce a "new" Psp, and look it has a camera!, with the possibility of a touch screen and a second camera...

Looks to me like it's a rip off of the DSi with a dodgey analogue nub type thing and mainstream games...

Do I sense a FAIL already?

I laughed when I heard what they might be calling the unit.

In all honesty, I'm not really interested. I have a PSP and a DS Lite already, so I'm quite happy. I do wonder if Sony intends to market the PSP Go! as a successor to the current PSP and phase the old one out gradually, or just as another option.

[Oh my, accidental double post. So this is what it feels like... How embarrassing...]

To be honest, I think it's a bad move. Encouraging people to download instead of buy hard copies is just going to make people who are wary of non physical purchases consider piracy instead. Why don't they make games on non-editable SD cards or something? It's compact enough

Exactly what I'm thinking

So, will they actually release any decent original games for it (besides Locoroco 3 that is :P) this time around?

I concur, I'm not at all keen on the idea of it being a download only system, I'd much rather pick up my games in a more tangible form.

Somehow, the Go! suffix gives me bad visions of them attempting to market this as some sort of wonderful all purpose device. A task at which it will likely fail at, due to its tragic misfortune of not being a phone.

Ugh, "PSP Go!"? Seriously, if it's all digital, I'm already not buying it. And if there is no second analogue nub, I shall face palm so hard that it might just break my hand.

C'mon Sony, you can do better than this. ESPECIALLY with regards to the nub...

*Points to the DS-Store, Camera, Music Player, Picture Viewer, Built-In Web Browser, built-in RAM, SD-Card slot and Camera on the DSi* I'm pretty sure that the PSP all of those before the DS did.

If you want a phone, get a f**king phone! It's not meant to be a phone, it's meant to be a games console!

OH... IF it turns out to look like the ones in those faked pictures ill have to buy one

Megacherv is right. If anything, Nintendo has been ripping off Sony for the longest time.

Of course, the Nintendo fanboys are too blind to see it.

Because if I remember correctly, they all complained how the PSP had so many features that didn't actually correlate to gaming.

Now the DSi gets them all and they praise it as a breakthrough. Hypocrites much?

I facepalmed when I saw that lol. His statement not yours.

I'm just saying, as there are phones around these days that can carry out all the tasks I can imagine them wanting the new PSP to perform and I don't know about other people, but I'd much rather buy a PSP Go! to play games on. I'm not really interested in having a camera or satnav on my portable games console.

Let's just hope the new PSP has enough games support for it this time around.

Hooray for the death of UMD! Sony might actually have a viable system on its hands.

The DS seems to do fine without any analog sticks, so I see no reason why the PSP must be so desperate for two.

I'm really getting sick of these rumours, can we just shut up about them already? I would really like to know the sources these people are getting it from to see how "reliable" they are.

Ok, lets see, Gameboy pocket had a camera, so unless the Psp has been out about.. 9 years or so? And I'm pretty sure I saw a music player of sorts on the GBA. DS has had all those things before the DSi, they just haven't been official Nintendo products, the DSi is Nintendo incorporating all these things so the average joe that buys one will feel 100% comfortable in buying it.

The Psp did do the whole hand held internet browser thing first BUT the DS does it so much better the touch screen (Nintendo's original design for a hand held games console)to use a touch keyboard and controls are far more efficient than spending 5 minutes typing "http://www.escapistmagazine.com" into your button navigated "keyboard" then another 2 or 3 waiting for it to load properly.

The funny thing is...you don't NEED two sticks to play games. The ONLY genre that truly requires two sticks is the FPS genre..and really, there have been games on the system that have shown how you can work around it. That and big friggen whoop, we got enough shooters as it is, we don't need more. Anyone who complains about lack of dual analog needs to quiet down and rethink their argument because really...name any other genre that ABSOLUTELY needs it. And NO camera control doesn't count because that can be accommodated by good programming.

Also proof you don't need 2 sticks for shooters: Goldeneye, yea any and all rebuttals are moot unless you didn't like goldeneye.

Kinda bummed about the no UMD. So are all my old UMD's more or less useless on the new system? At $29-$39 each, I think I have close to $375 in games (thank goodness I never bought a movie).

Um, that's precisely why the PSP has done it before the DS. I'm sure you can find a music player for the Atari 2600, but that doesn't mean that it was supported by Atari. The PSP had music, movie, TV, and game playing all integrated into one system, all supported by Sony. Nintendo has not done any of that stuff until the DSi, and if they did they never fully integrated it.

One tiny camera that just happened to be on a GBA pocket does not compare to one system with 5 times the capabilities of it. You can argue that it's already happened with Cell Phones, but phones don't have a primary function for games.

Ok, the GBP did have a camera, and games to go with it, that makes it a "thing" it might not compare but the fact is Nintendo did it first, capabilites don't come into it, case closed.

Sony have a distinct habit of copying Nintendo and Microsoft and hardly do anything original themselves, this case isn't much different, they announce a Psp containing everything the DSi has, and when Nintendo do something they do it right, and don't need to rip other companies off.

Consoles need to develop with what comes out from them before new models come out, for example, GBA - GBA SP. GBA's screen was too dark, they went through to many batteries etc. on the SP they improve it because it was necessary.

Psp - Psp Go!. Lets copy Nintendo because we failed on the PS3 and make some money back.

Even if Sony did do these things "first", Nintendo perfected them first.

And whats up with the name... it sounds like something a 5 year old would come up with.

*waits for the go at "Wii"*
