E3 Going Ahead Despite Deadly Swine Flu

E3 Going Ahead Despite Deadly Swine Flu

image

Despite the apocalyptic threat of the deadly swine flu pandemic which is threatening to eradicate life as we know it from the face of the Earth, E3 will be going ahead as planned.

The imminent doom which surely awaits us all isn't going to put a damper on this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, running at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 2-4. Developers, publishers and retailers alike have indicated they will still be attending the show, although representatives of companies including Activision, EA and Ubisoft told MCV that they are "closely monitoring" the relentlessly virulent outbreak.

13 cases of swine flu have been reported in California and while none have been fatal, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has nonetheless declared a state of emergency to "suspend non-competitive bid contracts for services, material, personnel and equipment needed to respond to this outbreak." The Governor's office says the level of response is appropriate, as this is the gravest threat to life on Earth faced by Schwarzenegger since Satan came to New York in search of a bride in the 1999 action thriller End of Days.

ESA spokesman Dan Hewitt sounded irrationally upbeat in a statement regarding the show. "The 2009 E3 Expo is progressing as planned. Public health officials are taking all appropriate steps and we continue to follow their direction on all measures," he said, seemingly unconcerned by the fact that we're all about to die in a horrific biological cataclysm. "We look forward to a great event, and to seeing you in Los Angeles in June."

Dang, my plans to bring the gaming industry to a grinding halt have failed.

Dammit, hopefully an outbreak of Zombie Swine flu will come their.

Malygris, is that a hint of sarcasm I detect? Let me remind you that swine flu is instead a horrible disease, I mean, the media wouldn't be overblowing it just for attention. *eyeroll*

oh come on! swine flu isnt a big Deal anyways why would E3 care?
the WHO said that the virus is not as bad as they origionally thought so "deadly" swine Flu is a little overzealous dont ya think?

i clicked the link :(

I think he was being ironic.

When I first read your post, I didn't read it as "The World Health Organisation", I read it as "The Who".

As long as Corrupted Blood doesn't spread too, then we should be fine.

haha, the sarcasm bus has made a stop here, everyone on board. Seriously though get to E3 and sneese on every person you see there let me know how that goes.

Wait, what DEADLY Swine Flu?

There is one case of a person that is infected with A-H1N1 and she's feeling better every day. Maybe it's free healthcare that's working, maybe because were prepared... But it looks like this one case will be over soon.

Besides, normal flu is only a bit less dangerous. And more people die from it.

What are you talking about? Nobody on the internet uses sarcasm, ever. Certainly not here on The Escapist. A respected member such as Malygris would never use a sarcastic tone for something as serious as this.

Feel shame for having thought that someone was making light of the internet by even sugesting that they were not entirely serious about what they said.

ok whos from europe?
now that i have your attention everyone remember bird flu and how it killed like 30 people and titerd out over the course of 5 months
no one ph34R 7H3 5W1N3 F1U

people are only going on about it because 1) the recession anyone remeber that and 2) it hit america...

ok....?

Well, I'm glad gamers aren't stupid enough for this hysteria.

Be funny if health officials make sure everyone is clean before entering as lack of hygiene can't spread the flu. So anyone smelling of B.O is classed as a liability and refused assess till take a shower in ones provided on site to reduce risk of infection *cough* and smell *cough* on the floor :D

Comon when will people realize that so far the Swine Flu has been about as deadly as a nasty cold. Events should not be canceled, schools should not be closed, we are not going to die. That and I would think that if you had the swine flu you would know better then to go to a giant public place.

That link at the end is mother-effing hilarious.

Sarcasm + Hilarious link = a Cookie for Malygris.

Swine flu 5% mortality rate vs. Phat lewts.

No brainer.

Free headdesks for everyone who's taken Malygris' post seriously. That is all.

Also, what on Earth (or Azeroth, I'm guessing)is that a picture of?

I don't see why everyone is getting so upset about swine flu myself. As far as I can tell, it's still only killing pigs.

QFT.

That said, I have yet to not be sick when I return from a show. The degree of sick always varies (though it's a constant for GDC, oddly enough), but it's a guarantee.

OH WELL THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR.

Seriously, I would have been pretty freaking concerned if E3 was even DELAYED due to a hint of the oh-so-deadly swine flu.

THEY IS CRAZZORS

how could anyone expect to love at a time like this?

Always read posts before commenting to make sure you don't miss any irony.
But this seemed dripping with sarcasm to me anyway.

Linky by the same guy as http://isitchristmas.com/ ?

*ahem*

Pride heralds the end of your world! Come, mortals! Face the wrath of the Soulflayer!

Riight well everyone now knows that the swine flu really isn't that bad and the only reason people died from it(well maybe not the only one) was because the people who got it in mexixo were too poor to get proper medical treatment and died.

At least you havent become a zombie. So remember to bring a few weapons can't ever be sure when the first Zombie mutates and attacks you.

Best. Article. Ever.

And the link at the end just made it all better.

That's Hakkar, the final boss of Zul'Gurub, from Vanilla WoW. He was the source of the Corrupted Blood outbreak a couple years back. Very fitting picture :P

swine flu not so deadly more people die every month from vending machines then the total deaths of swine flu 3000 people die every year from the regular flu that almost 100 people a day and currently the same number of people have died from swine flu as snorting fire ants
and only people to die were a 23 month old mexican baby and an extreamly ill woman who had like aids or something

Those fools! Those foolish fools!

Oh noez!!!
Well, not really. I live in a fairly isolated country that has had no cases of swine flu hus far.
Personally I am still shaking in my metaphorical boots about SARS and avian flu becuase the media circus never actually left town on those, it just settled down after people realised that apocalyptia may not actually be the result if it is properly contained.

E3 goes ahead, media sensationalise, the planet goes around the sun. Any more incredible social commentaries to make?

The boss that massacred several servers full of characters. He puts out a debuff that makes one person take a bit of damage every 2 seconds for 20 seconds but was generaly not lethal as you as your healer has half a brain but every time it does damage, it spreads to nearby targets who get a new debuff which can then re-infect the first person resulting in a neverending chain of players taking damage that either overwhelm the healer or cause him to run out of mana. Some players found out that if they dismissed their pet after it was hit, the time would be stopped and the pet could be resummoned in anothe place and be contageous there. They released those pets in Ironforge and Orgrimmar, which had half the population of the game standing at any given time back then, resulting in the effect spreading like wildfire. Level 60 characters would generaly survive for a while but everything below lvl 40 was inevitably killed off quickly. So whe they ressurected, they got infected again by people running arround like headless chickens and again and again, resulting in Hakkar temporay hogging the first spot of "most players killed by an npc" away from Defias Pillagers(high power lvl 15 creaure in a lvl 10 area) and Vaelazstraz The Corrupt(A bossfight that was over in 180 seconds, one way or another).

I salute the brave men and women who are risking their lives to come to E3. o7
