Nintendo Officially Remaking Pokemon Gold & Silver

image

The second generation of Pokemon games is being remade - as Heart Gold and Soul Silver - to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their original release.

There had been hints to the effect earlier this week, but now it's official (if you can read the crazy moon language of the Japanese). It's not exactly a surprise - the original Gold and Silver sold a staggering 23 million copies worldwide, and the GBA remakes of the first-generation games (Fire Red and Leaf Green) certainly did well in their own right.

Many fans consider the second generation of the series to be the best, and to be fair, G/S/Crystal did things that no other game in the franchise had done before, or has done since - notably, once you beat the game, you were allowed to return to the Kanto region from Red & Blue, where you had eight more gym badges to vie for on your journey to Catch 'Em All.

Presumably, Heart Gold and Soul Silver will contain updated mechanics to match the current fourth generation of Pearl, Diamond, and Platinum, as Fire Red and Leaf Green matched the then-current third generation when they were released. Presumably, there will also be some brand-new elements in the game, but we can only speculate for now.

Still, it should be a welcome nostalgia trip for those of us who sunk hours into the G/S/C games back in the day - a nostalgia trip ten years in the making, that we've certainly earned. Well, at least those of us who aren't heathens who don't like Eevee.

Yes! I had a feeling they would, but now it's official! Can't freaking wait!

So Keane's not an Eevee fan, huh? That's a shame, I loved my Vaporeon and Espeon. I'm greatly looking forward to this release.

exactly the move that nintendo needed to make with pokemon games. can't wait!

Curse Nintendo!
Now I will have to buy a DS(i).

I have no problem admitting that I have played (and do so occasionally) the Pokemon games, so I am happy to hear this. Actually, I have been expecting this for some time. I can't quite believe it's been 10 years though... wow.

I have recently gotten to the point where the battery in the cartridge has run out, so I cannot play the game any more. Hopefully a remake will remedy this particular problem.

So... happy...

I haven't looked forward to a game this much for AGES. And I never thought I'd say that about a Pokemon game!

People don't like eevee? Surely they could only be the most cruel and heartless of people.
Much as I loved Silver, going to Kanto after the main quest was a great idea. I'm not entirely sure rehashing it is a good thing. I might be wrong, but I don't think it will rekindle my nostalgia, more than making me dig out the game and my SP.

Hmmmm..... I did like Red and Blue and in my understanding, Gold and Silver are just Yellow x2, which is pretty cool as far as I'm concerned. Sounds like I'll probably end up picking one of these up, so I can get back to my old battling ways of '99.

I'm kinda on the fence about how good this will be. I mean, Gold and Silver were definately my favorite ones, due in no small part to that unique thing (going back to Kanto and beating the Red/Blue/Yellow gym leaders with a super-team) but where else can they improve it? Have us go to Johto (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald) and Sinnoh (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum)? Full 3D battles? Character customization? Prof. Oak kicks the bucket? They don't release a third version of this game that closely imitates the anime? Bring back the elements from G/S/C that they cut out (Headbutting small trees, using Whirlpool to cross whirlpools, et cetera)?

That's amazing! I'm playing through Leaf Green right now, actually, but never would have thought they'd give my beloved Gold a remake, as well. Sadly, my cartridge battery died a long time ago, losing all my progress, but not my fond memories! I've since replaced the battery, but it's just not quite the same, somehow.

I was annoyed that Leaf Green didn't contain any of the metal generation's advances, but still threw in some (but not all) of the third-generation enhancements. Day and night, being able to return to Kanto!, that little cartridge was loaded with the poop of a pimp.

Go Keane!

Fuck Eevee.

I want this game now...

Does this finally mean we'll be able to get Mew with some degree of certainty? (Go ahead and judge me, it was a long time ago)

Now will there be an update for Battle Revolution?

The problem is the battery in the originals runs out after a few years, causing you to be unable to save, it's something to do with the internal clock that had to be put in the cartridge.
That's why I'm so happy about this, also while the newer games have hardly changed dramatically, the small improvments they've made are nice.

HEART Gold? SOUL Silver? not Sun and Moon?!
though, I don't mind them bying called Fresh pink Gold and gay purple silver, I'll still buy the fuck out of them!

EDIT: can someone translate this?

whats it going to be on?

It's obvious it'll be on the DS.

I am so [etopig[0psnbrtgh happy! I really didn't want to have to go buy and beat the Pokemon Coliseum games for the Jhoto pokemon.

There already is. It's called putting one thousand pokemon into the ranch.

What wrong with playing Pokemon? The game's battle and stat systems are some of the most complex you will find.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

gold and silver were the best
shame the batteries ran out >=[

Meh. I wish Nintendo would take a risk and make some real progress with the franchise. Full 3D would be nice. Especially in-battle. The DS can certainly handle it.

Y'know, I didn't like Gold/Silver that much. Going back to Kanto should have been awesome, but the region just wasn't as fleshed out as it used to be, so it felt really small and short. When there's stuff like the Safari zone being inexplicably shut down, and Cinnabar and Seafoam Islands (2 dungeon areas right there) being replaced by 1 battle, I can't help but feel they got lazy with the new Kanto design. (The original badges didn't even appear on your player card thingie, IIRC.) A lot of the 100 new Pokemon felt boring, and several of the potentially cool areas in the game (like the Alph Ruins and the Bug-Catching Contest) were underwhelming in execution (sorry, what?! As a reward for finding all 26 of them, I get a little GameBoy printer printout?) Several of the other sites (the Dragon caves, the lake with the shiny Gyarodos) were really short, and provided little incentive to visit outside of a single story event.

On the plus note, the berries and specialty pokeballs were neat (though they didn't go nearly far enough in power), and held items was an excellent idea. I was very ambivalent about the day-night system - at first I thought it was a great idea, but regretted its presence when I found out that playing at a consistent time each day (like, after 6pm when I'd done all my homework) actively hurt my chances to catch certain Pokemon.

Overall, it was a useful stepping stone, but the games don't stand alone to me, like the originals (and thus FR/LG) or even RS do.

Sweet. I know what game I've got on my DS want list now! Gold and Silver is what really drew me into the Pokemon universe. Sure, I had beaten Blue before, but it was very simple. With Gold, it added time mechanics for the first time, which really made the game interesting, and also allowed you to basically go through the game twice. If the upgrade is as good as the upgrade for FireRed/LeafGreen, this is going to end up being one awesome game.

This. Plus it had some of the most annoying sidequests and fetchquests (the Team Rocket hideouts and underground Goldenrod, and the SS Anne trip to Kanto come to mind) And it introduced the concept of having legendary pokemon running in the wild, a concept which goes beyond the annoying and kicks sanity to the curb. After legitimately catching each in an Ultra Ball the first time I swore I was going to cheat on any subsequent tries. 3rd gen at least limited it to 1, and I gladly used my Master Ball on that one. I would also add, to the time of day thing, the days of the week were even worse. Waiting until Friday to catch Lapras or only being able to do the Bug Catching Contest 3 times a week was annoying. It was like they just slapped arbitrary limits on things to get as much use of the clock as they could.

I did not find the opportunity to battle Red to be worthwhile either, nor was there any reason to collect another 8 badges. You beat the Elite Four already, thus unlocking any post game content (sadly, I think Kanto pretty much WAS the post-game content) This is supposed to be the point where I actually get to play the game, NOT do the same thing all over again! Having to explore another entire region wasnt any fun either, especially since the gym leaders and other trainers did not have their levels increase any as you went through the region.

Considering most of the things Gold and Silver did right (like introducing Dark and Steel types to nerf Psychic) carried on to future generations, the bad just vastly outweighs the good. Really, the entire second generation was quanity of new features + Kanto revisit, rather than quality. I would be willing to place the second gen on the bottom of the pile personally, but still looking forward to the remakes anyway. Specifically, looking forward to the inevitable bonus content. Unless Nintendo is actually going to improve the original content (like making Kanto actually worth that bloody S.S Anne fetch quest it takes to get there) the bonus content will inevitably outshine it.

Horay!!! Pokemon Gold was my first game ever!!!!!!
