Britons Set Group Cosplay Record

image

Offering further proof that the British have too much time on their hands, a collection of nearly 400 cosplayers gathered at the recent MCM Expo in London to break the world record for "largest gathering of people dressed as video game characters."

On hand for the event were officials from the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition who certified that the 376 unfortunately attired Britons had smashed the previous record of 342.

Unfortunately, the accomplishment doesn't necessarily garner an instant spot in next year's record book. Guinness says the record will "be considered for inclusion," but offers no promises.

If you ask me, that's a very brave decision, given how notoriously violent cosplayers can be when enraged. There's no more terrifying sight than a grown man being ripped limb from limb by teenagers dressed as the cast of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

I never really got cosplaying, but whatever.

Why would anyone want to cosplay as Shadow the Hedgehog...>.<

My first thought upon seeing that picture.

So they...hmm..cause...

I have no asnwer...

Why must the black one strike a 'gangsta' pose?

I'm sorry but....they just look.....so stupid.

Ohh that's what that was! I kept seeing funnily dressed people in London...including one carrying a 7-ft sword.

I went last year for a Rock Band competition. The journey was... interesting. People on the Underground don't really seem to get the cosplay thing. Though, to be fair, nor do I really. But as long as it means I get my picture taken with attractive women dressed as Sorceress Edea, I'm all for it.

Nah, seriously... I'm not remotely interested in anime or comics but, still, it was good surreal fun for an outsider. Bit of a shame I was busy last weekend and couldn't go, but they do it twice a year so I'll try to go along to the next one in October.

Wait, wait, WAIT.

I didn't even know there were any events like this in England, I thought it was just America. So, even though I never knew these events existed they set a record? Holy crap.

EDIT: Why does Shadow The Hedgehog have an assault rifle? Which Sonic game was this?!

I think it was Shadow The Hedgehog game if I remember he had guns running around shooting things I dunno I never played it.

Shadow the Hedgehog.

Not really obscure, but you probably don't want to know anyway.

I thought cosplayers actually... dressed THEMSELVES up. You know, make-up and everything. They just put on halloween costumes ;d

Shadow sux imo. He could've gone as Knuckles...

Oh good god... Bottom left hand corner, I spy a Leafeon and Mudkip V.V Please people, if you're gonna cosplay do it sensibly. Mudkip suit on a little kid? Cute cause Pokemon is meant for them. On a 20 year old? Creepy as hell.

I was there :P

not in cosplay...

Really though its better than going to a wow convention and see a bunch of little people dressed like murlocs.

Really? This doesn't seem right. I can't remember the actual name, but have they never been to that one really big convention in Japan? Again, I can't remember the name, but I do remember it goes for several days, and is, if I remember correctly, physically over a hundred acres in size. I can't imagine they don't destory this number every year without trying... though it would be mostly anime characters, but a fair number of anime characters are also video game characters so... yeah.

Either, it's still impressive and... well different, at the least.

Nothing wrong with a little cosplay, guys.

This reminds me of the gif where a bunch of people in costume come out of nowhere and start chasing a guy down the street.

Nearly 400 people and that photo is the best they could take? Heh.

Why dress as crappy characters liek Sonic & Shadow?

Go as this guy damnit!

For all of our sakes, let's hope so.

Sorceress Edea? was that a joke or did some girls go as that once? because that would be....interesting :P

I know people who have dressed up as the arrancar from Bleach, made up the hollow masks and everything...

ps Doc Theta Sigma, i love your display pic!

No, that really happened. There was a girl dressed as Edea (full headgear and everything) and I had my picture taken with her. I'd post it here, but it was taken on my old phone which has since been stolen.

There was a Quistis too, but I lost sight of her before I could ask for a picture. Needs more Selphie though...

He's a cool character that has a lot of potential: but Sonic Team couldn't grasp the implications of any of their characters if you handed them a syopsis with the important parts highlighted.

I mean, Shadow is a clone of Sonic. That leads to all sorts of possibilities: the ethics behind his existance, the search for his own meaning or destiny, his desire to destroy the original he's based off of, etc.

And you know what ST did to him instead? They made him the gangsta of the Sonic universe. They're idiots who can't understand the very license that they mass produce, and that's why Sonic has failed in recent years. Not because the IP can't exist in a 3D world, but because the developers with the rights to it suck at game design.

Hence my question. WHy would anyone want to cosplay a horrible horrible horrible character...

Having potencial doesn't save from sucking hard.

Well regardless of my opinions on cosplay (its not for me), having looked through the album, I have to say that quite a lot of the characters were really well done. Even if I didn't know who they were (as soon as it strayed into anime territory), the work that a lot of the people put into the costumes are plain to see and it has worked.

True, but I still like to think that he's a cool character, regardless of how Sonic Team has bastardized him. Hell, they can't DO characters at all: they added a really cool one in Sonic Heroes (the robot) and then gave him crap lines and generated little interest in him.

All in all, I'm just saying: Shadow is cool, Sonic Team can't use him worth balls.

As for cosplaying in general, I think I already made a comment somewhere else. Hold on while I find it... I'll edit it into this post.

EDIT: Damn, it's lost... but it was like this: Cosplaying is cool, provided you put effort into it and look like the person you try to cosplay as.

What exactly is cosplaying?

needausername:

It's dressing up as a favorite character from any form of media. Anime characters, comic book characters, videogame characters, it's all cool.

I myself don't mind cosplaying, but honestly.. The whole Sonic fursuit thing is just creepy..

...really? Only 400? I'm positive there are more than that at some of the larger cons.

Also, cosplay can be awesome when done right.

I live in Britain and this makes me sad.
