THQ Trash-Talks the Wii

image

THQ's Senior Vice President of Creative Development has some harsh words for the Nintendo Wii, describing it as a "Monopoly box in a closet" and saying the company will no longer release core games for the platform.

"The Wii is a Monopoly box in a closet! I've got my Wii Sports and I'm good," SVP Danny Bilson told IndustryGamers. "I take it out, get the family around, we flail around for a couple hours, and we're happy until next month when we take it out, or maybe for junior's birthday, I'm going to buy him a Mario game."

Bilson described the Wii as a "nightmare" for third party developers and said THQ is stepping back from the "core gamer" demographic on the system. "Right now, we're not moving hardcore stuff to the Wii," he said. "We were; we stopped it, just because we're a little risk averse."

That risk is the result of the Wii market being so "flooded with junk" that quality titles are difficult to pick out. "You look at the Wii wall [at GameStop] and you can't find anything," Bilson said. "It's a big conglomeration of junk and the Nintendo stuff pops, and a couple of other things pop, and that's it."

THQ will continue to publish software for the Wii, he added, but nothing like Deadly Creatures, the Wii-exclusive spider-and-scorpion game that was released in February. Instead, the company will produce the family-oriented, casual fare more traditionally associated with the Wii - which sounds an awful lot like the "junk" he'd just finished complaining about. "I'm a big believer in that," he added.

It's a bit of a shame, because aside from a few notable exceptions - like Deadly Creatures - the Wii-owning core gamer market is virtually untapped and could represent a gold mine for a publisher willing to take it on. On the other hand, the Wii is essentially a gold mine all on its own and it's hard to blame THQ or anyone else for going where the money is.

Poor developers making The Conduit. Everyone is watching them. If that game doesn't make it... backed by solid titles like House of the Dead, Madworld, Deadly Creatures, etc. the hope for 'core' games on the Wii is soon fading.

I hope his quotes were taken out of context. Its not good to alienate people you do business with.

When I look at the Wii's wall at Gamestop, all I see is Imagine Babyz. I see where THQ is going with this.

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
A developer had the guts to talk about the truth of the Wii, now if only they would stop publishing these crap games Nintendo might get the idea.

They do have a point about all the shovel-ware, Nintendo should really consider turning more of it down. Leave them for the crappy V-Techs and leap-Frogs.

Nintendo is really running the risk of causing the market crash it arose from. The Wii and DS have a lot of shovelware on them that it's becoming very hard to pick out a decent game on shop shelves.

Which is exactly like the 1983 market crash, too much crap on the systems destroyed the consumer faith in the market and it collapsed. It recovered a few years later when Nintendo came on board with their strict regulations on what could be released, to avoid the real crap coming out on their system.

Now they'll let any old tat be released, if they keep it up the system is going to die out. Soccer moms will only buy Carnival Games so many times.

That's interesting, cause I'm wondering what kind of noteworthy games THQ has been making these past couple of years themselves.

Except that everyone already knows that the Wii has a bunch of crap. It's not really a secret.

The problem is that there are few "hardcore" third-party exclusives for the Wii that don't involve gratuitous violence, which alienates the mainstream Wii owners.

I remember being a gullible young lad perusing my monthly copy of nintendo power. Firmly cemented in the nintendo ghetto. The announcement of nintendo's newest console in the works with the working title of the "Nintendo Revolution" simply had me giddy at the notion of swinging the master sword at baddies with their innovative motion control system.

Then an E3 rolled around and the name got changed to the Wii...I immediately lost all respect for nintendo and promptly invested in a PS2. The Nintendo Revolution, destined to revolutionize technology of the gaming world; offering imersive (spell check won't give me the right spelling) gameplay the like of which gamers only dreamed of.

Now in the age of "Boogey", "Cooking Mama", and various other craptastic family friendly games the Wii is a mere shadow of its former aspirations as the Revolution. I truly weep for its lost potential.

Hey, hes right! When I go look to see what games to hire for my Wii, they all look like shit!

I'm sure this is not new to anyone, one of the first threads I entered on the Escapist was about all this shovelware.

This man speaks the truth! ALL HAIL OUR LEADER.... ahem

Wow you guys just eat up anything or anyone trash talking Nintendo.
THQ is basically bawwing that their game didn't sell well and feel the need to blame the console for it.

It's their own fault for failing to advertise the game adequately.

Amen, brother.

some one give this man a pat on the back, it's about time companies started speaking the truth. My hat is off to this man.

I still disagree. Now there is the new problem of nintendo not creating their own games. Games for the wii are overall still fine and if a person looks hard enough there are enough games that will appease everyone. However it is the image and more pronounced sterotype nintendo gets that makes fans reel in disgust for the company.

If there are problems it is that they are becoming an investment company over being a toy maker just like Microsoft is being an investment company over a software company. They really need to get that first party support back and make some games by themselves because the amount of games developed by nintendo is getting less and less.

If it exists. These core markets for the Wii and DS are starting to sound like the lost mines of King Solomon - supposedly filled with riches beyond your wildest dreams, yet searching for them has claimed the lives of many publishers.

Hang on, lets see if I've got this right. Its Nintendo's, and ONLY Nintendo's, fault that third parties have pumped out crappy game after crappy game for the Wii after being caught by suprise that the machine took off, and now some developer has had a public strop over it, and this is something that they should be applauded for?

Why can devs not get it through their heads that if they actually made a Wii game worth a damn then maybe people will buy it?

And on that matter, THQ, I honestly can't think of any of their recent games off the top of my head. Last game of theirs I bought was a WWF game for the N64 about a decade ago, so maybe its just me but I really can't bring myself to give a crap about what someone from there has to say.

Sorry for the anger here but I'm sick to bloody death of this whinging by third parties about the Wii for a situation they themselves have created.

So THQ is mad that there's a massive ammount of crap content on the Wii, and their solution is... To produce more crap content?

Stop the shovelware and make some better games, or get off the field!

Oh THQ. You dare trash talk about the Wii when you are also responsible for it's shovelware.

Their worst game is last.

What about that redneck game?

This happens to whatever console sells the most units. Remember how many crappy ps2 games there were? Because everybody had a ps2. It isn't a reason to ignore the console though, it's a reason to embrace it...
if you're developing anything that's worth playing.

it's all been simple from the start.

Wii - kids, housewives and optimistic star wars fans
PS3 - rich boys
X360 - the red bull gamers
PC - angry, angry guys with glasses
Real life - what?

The wii is a failure in the eyes of most gamers.
Sorry if this is trolling I have no intention to.

You tell 'em, brother!

As for the topic, I see where the THQ guy is coming from; you really need to sieve through the crap to get to the good stuff. However, that doesn't mean that the good stuff isn't there, it's just harder to find among a mass of other games.

So what he is saying pretty much, is that they have found that the company can make a whole lot of money off of making poor shovel ware games for the wii, for little risk, whereas they have to develop time and resources towards a 'hardcore' game and they can't be arsed. Plus they get to trash talk Nintendo and get in Sony/Microsofts' good books.

Thanks THQ, you showed how you really think for once. It wasn't pretty either.

It's a do or die situation for them. Even if it appears as if they ripped off Mass Effect.

Wow, that's some harsh words.

What pisses me off about the "hardcore" games for the Wii is that most of them sell piss poorly.

No More Heroes did not sell very well, MadWorld wasn't a giant success, Deadly Creatures probably wasn't well sold, GTA: China Town Wars hardly sold anything in the first week, Okami still didn't sell that well, and The Conduit probably won't sell that great either (hopefully I'm wrong).

And yet the only real reason why these guys are putting the bloody, gorey, kill fests on the Wii is so they can stand out and say "we're different!".

Such irony...I hate this irony...

It would help if they tried to hype the games and advertise them. Putting the games on the shelf won't guarentee sales.

Wii is a novelty item, i think most people know this.

Everyone should read this post, nod with at least some form of mutual understanding, and close the thread.

Aside from that is the fact that THQ is creating a good heap of the shovelware already on the system. So why are they complaining?

THQ should pull their head from their confused horse and try more new, thoughtful gaming ideas instead of sheltering under their heap of shit in fear of loosing a few chips. After all, look at No More Heroes: how ridiculously popular it is, that it is 'hard core', and that the only real plot is a guy with a light saber eviscerating the same ten jobbers repeatedly. Gamer gold, that is.

your right, im angreh angreh angreh! dont have glasses tho

im glad someone finally dissed up the wii, but thq forgot the common saying: "dont throw stones if you live in a glass house" there not very go devs. if it was valve, then maybe it would be ok

I don't trust the commentary of THQ, a company that is itself mired in hypocrisy and garbage, but it's largely true. I've lost faith in Nintendo, and they haven't gotten a penny from me in five years.

Yet he said that THQ would be publishing the same crap that he complained about. He also said "I'm a big believer in that." My point being; THQ is one of the big shit-shovelers on the market, and people are looking to make a quick buck on the Wii. Its a good console, if only people took it seriously like Nintendo and Platinum Studios do.

Death to shovelware, up with games.

Oh, and Keymaster45 brings up an excellent point: that the name change of the console was the start of many gimmicky agonies for Nintendo fans. Maybe if they had stuck with Revolution as a name, this vould have all been avoided...

Ugh...The Wii is a legitimate console just like PS3 or 360. The fact that it doesn't have as powerful graphics as the other two systems doesn't make it inferior, just easier to develop for (no pressure to make each and every game the most beautiful thing ever existed). It's control isn't a gimmick, and if you're flailing your arms up and down "like an idiot", then you're not playing right. Or you have the motion sensor positioned wrong, or you're playing one of the mentioned shovelware games that naturally have crappy controls.

I loved Deadly Creatures, it was definately a unique game, and I'd like to see a sequel or a spiritual follow up that expands on the mechanics and fixes the bugs of the original game. Apparently we won't get that now, thanks THQ.

But, yes, they need to start actually enforcing the Seal of Quality thing again, the level of shovelware is ridiculous.
