Liveblog: Sony's E3 Press Conference

image

It's Sony's turn to brief the press. What surprises await? Let's liveblog!

News about the PSP Go slipped late last week, but Sony apparently still has two hours' worth of news to share with us. Can't wait to find out what they have to say.

11:10 - We're starting a bit late, but Queen's one vision is playing as we watch wonderfully bombastic video of games like Godof War, Saw, Wet, Ghostbusters, and God of War.

Jack Tretton comes on stage to make a joke about press leaks."We won't be outdone by anyone!" he says.Good one,Jack.

11:14 - The screen behind Jack is enormous.Huuuuuge. Practically bigger than Escapist HQ, seriously. And Jack says that only the PS3 is capable of showing live code at the resolution necessary to display on that massive screen.

11:17 - Kicking off by talking about the PS2, which remains the "perfect family console," and will feature 100 new titles this year. And the $99 price tag sure doesn't hurt any.

And now Jack is spitting out statistics. At this point, Microsoft trotted out The Beatles, Jack Tretton is talking about how well Sony sells in Latin America. Just sayin'.

11:19 - inFamous is just one of 35 exclusive titles coming to PS3 this year. Ooooo, I think we're about to see some Uncharted 2. Sweet!

Naughty Dog's Evan Wells comes out. Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta starts tonight at midnight. But let's see some single player.

The sense of scale as Nate clambers over rooftops and, holy crap, runs away from a helicopter dishing out machine gun fire, is just sick. Nate ducks through a hole in the wall to find enemies waiting to take their own shots at him. He runs, guns, takes cover and jumps as the helicopter literally shoots the building out from under him.

11:26 - First public unveiling of live MAG gunplay comes next. MAG is an FPS that pits 256 players against each other on the field of battle. We're about to see a real live game in progress. Pulling back, you can see that the battlefield is just massive. The squad leader calls in a UAV to try to get a bead on the enemy's location, but it gets shot down. Gameplay-wise, MAG looks like your typical squad-based shooter, just on an insanely massive scale. Could be amazing, if it runs smoothly enough.(Which this demo is doing, by the way.)

11:32 - Let's talk PSP now. As an aside, I can see the sound guy's teleprompter that lets him know what's coming up. I can see the future!

11:33 - News about the Hannah Montana bundle, complete with lilac PSP, gets cheers from the audience. Dude,I totally want that lilac PSP. Oh, hey, here comes Kaz Hirai!

11:35 - He's here to officially announce the PSP redesign. For those who have a more "digital" lifestyle. Kaz says "We have a couple of names for this device. First, we call it the Worst Kept Secret of E3." Har, har. And, of course, it's also called the PSP Go.

11:37 - More than 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the original PSP. 16G of internal flash memory, built in WiFi, Integrated Bluetooth...but you knew all of that already.

Media Go will be the new application for accessing the PlayStation Store on the PC. Sense Me will be a new PSP application that will select a musical playlist based on moods that you select.

Lowering the price of the PSP toolkit to encourage new devs to create PSP content.

11:40 - PSP Go will be available for $249 (249 Euros) on October 1 in North America in Europe.

11:42 - Polyphony's Kazunouri Yamauchi comes out to announce Gran Turismo for PSP, "which everyone has been waiting for for so long." Has Gran Turismo running at 60 fps on the PSP Go.

It offers a full-size Gran Turismo experience. This is not some "shrunken down" version. And now we get to see a video of it in action. Preeeetty. Have to check it out on the show floor to see if it really is that luscious.

11:50 - Time for Sony's Metal Gear announcement. Hideo Kojima comes out to talk Snake. Too bad he couldn't have a cameo at Nintendo's press conference, just so he could have the trifecta.

PSP game coming out called Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. The setting is ten years after Metal Gear Solid 3, in the 70s. It's a true sequel in the Metal Gear franchise.

Sigh...thanks to yet another technical glitch, I just lost everything about about the game. Ok, it's not a spinoff, Kojima will write the script and produce the game. Game takes place in 1974, in Costa Rica. We saw a trailer, which looked to have everything a Metal Gear lover might want.

But now we're on to Resident Evil Portable.

12:00 - Which pretty much just gets namechecked along with LittleBigPlanet, Jak and Daxter, Monster Hunter, and a bunch of other PSP games for which we are seeing a trailer now.

Yay, Soulcalibur! Yay, Persona! Yay PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe! Yay, Fat Princess! The Petz and Hannah Montana games get huge cheers once again. We are weird, weird people.

12:03 - Final Fantasy VII available today on PSN.

Oh, and now we're gonna talk about Home. Cue snoring.

Video to show us how far Home has come in the six months since it launched. Apparently the ability to make your avatar do the fingergun thing is a major selling point. Yeaaaah, sorry, guys, I still just don't care.

12:09 - Video of all the upcoming hotness on PS3. Final Fantasy XII, Uncharted 2, MAG, Arkham Asylum, Brutal Legend, White Knight Chronicles, Dirt 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Wet, Buzz Quiz World,King of Fighters (woooo!), Tekken 6, others. Some interesting looking PSN games coming up, including Katamari Forever and Eyepet.

An all-too brief glimpse at God of War 3, and now Jack is back. By the way, why was LittleBigPlanet in that montage?

12:14 - Rockstar North will be bringing Agent exclusively to the PS3. Aaaand...that's all they're saying about that. Wow, really? Yeah, really. We're going to look at Assassin's Creed 2 now.

12:15 - AC2 picks up right where AC left off, and is set during the Italian rennaissance. Which I'm sure I just misspelled. The story centers around someone who isn't an assassin at first, but becomes one with the help of friends like Leonardo DaVinci. In the demo, our assassin is taking advantage of a flying machine (glider) designed by DaVinci. Very vibrant looking world.

Over 30 different weapons, along with 6 more that you can unlock by playing the PSP Assassin's Creed.

12:35 - Let's watch a Final Fantasy XIII video. AND THEN A FINAL FANTASY XIV VIDEO. PS3 exclusive coming in 2010. Ohhhh, snap!

12:35 - Now we're watching a demo of a new controller that works with the PlayStation Eye. It's one-to-one movement, just like Nintendo's Wii Motion Plus - which the engineers doing the demo slyly reference by turning the controller into a virtual tennis racquet. Also using it to write precisely with a virtual pencil, doing a bit of artwork with a spray paint can. We're just looking at prototypes right now, unfortunately.

The demo guys point out that this controller would give you such precision that you could finally play a proper RTS on a console. Good point.

12:40 - Another PS3 exclusive now, ModNation Racers. Taking up the "play, create, share" theme introduced by LittleBigPlanet.

You can create your own little racer (lawd, they're so cute), and your own karts. Oh, did I mention it's a kart racing game? Pick up powerups, hit launch pads, dodge Thwomps...erm...Devastators. Oooooo, even better, just make a track of your own. To lay down track...just drive! In seconds, you can actually make a brand new, totally functional track. Ok, that's pretty damn swank.

Another technical difficulty and more info lost. Gah! Suffice to say, track creation looks seriously easy peasy.

1:00 - Video of The Last Guardian, which is Ico meets The Neverending Story, and utterly beautiful.

Sounds like we're going to get to see some God of War 3!

almost 12:00 and nothing worth its salt has been announced....

Well I am officially satisfied, that PSP segment has made me a happy owner. The ending to that MGS trailer was made of epic lolz, and resident evil portable!? bout damn time. It's a shame the fucked up on the PSPGo's pricing.

Interesting compromise - Microsoft gets Raiden (on a console) while Snake (the original one anyway) remains with Sony (but on a portable).

Wait, is Fat Princess gonna be on the PSP too? or was that a general naming of titles?

I'm kinda excited about MAG. That might be lots o' fun!

Edit: I don't know why, but I REALLY want Eye Pet.

Sony seems to have had a good conference so far, though Microsofts was still my favorite as of now. If they trot out a new Sly Cooper I will be all for them.

sorry but this has been discussed to death. More player does not make a better experience. (PDZ, Black Hawk down etc)

I have to agree - while it's not bad, the whole 'New PSP Model' isn't really that huge, even if it hadn't been leaked early. I hope they at least use a better screen than the one on the PSP-3000.

Other than that, the game info isn't bad, and they definitely have a much better lineup for the PSP than they have in the past. It seemed to be light on the PS3 info though.

Susan Arendt:
AND THEN A FINAL FANTASY XIV VIDEO. PS3 exclusive coming in 2010. Ohhhh, snap!

Oh god what?! AWESOME!!.. But how the hell did they manage to make so much game at once?.. I'm going to have 3 final fantasy games on one console in one year now?

Agreed agreed, than went a little far with the leak jokes. The new games actually make me want a PSP sort of, which means their conference was somewhat a success.

And FF 14? Seriously, when 13 isn't even out yet? Not getting a PS3 for that, but for God of War and Sly Cooper possibly... But Assassin's Creed 2 is definitly on my want list.

No so theres more money and development being pumped into actual games, not maths+anime or what i like to call mathine...

Better late than never on the motion controls I guess.

I don't mean the size, but the options. Just to be able to do 1 of so many different things (the UAV for instance) instead of just running around corners and shooting. If you could do that in a smaller sized game, I'd be just as happy :)

Well that first bit confused me seeing how GIANT and rich square are and how they've developed/are developing for 360 too, but aah - i love my mathine.

Come on Sony where's the announcement about Team Silent reuniting and working on SH5...

The prototypes are the problem with Sony and MS's motion controls. They've got prototypes. Wii Motion Plus had those last year, now it's getting retail games. Additional hardware is only an enabler for software, the hardware itself doesn't matter as much as the software that uses it.

Well... the highlight for me was assasins creed 2 which is multiplatform. Still they got a one-up on microsoft for showing gameplay.

I don't think you can fault Sony on software though... there are dozens of upcoming exclusives compared with Microsoft's handful.

God of War 3 looked pretty average though.

I assume each conference will get to show footage of multi-platform games depending on exclusive content - Sony get unlockable content via the PSP - Microsoft got Modern Warefare gameplay and map packs early.

I think the topic was the whole motion controls issue. And there, Nintendo has a huge advantage over MS and Sony: they're showing prototypes and by the time we've gotten any Natal/Wand games, the Wii has had plenty of Motion Plus games out (if Wii Sports Resort, The Conduit and Red Steel 2 are any good, not holding out for the last one really.)

But otherwise Nintendo's lineup was by far the least interesting. The Metroid reimagining sounds cool and Golden Sun on the DS sounds nice... but that's only one game on the Wii and another on the DS. Thankfully I know the DS will get more real nice goodies like Devil Survivor and Retro Game Challenge 2 this summer.

sorry, Final Fantasy XVI is PS3 exclusive and Sony was adamant about that:P

overall, second half of the conference was waaaay better than first (aka snoozefest) half. Motion control may be an exact rip off of Nintendo, but it seems to work, and well, it was bound to happen anyways.

That does make sense. It still was the highlight for me. The Last Guardian looked cool but the leak kinda ruined it.

I'm giving Sony the win. Sure their conference was the most... unfocused (what with all the video montages and the meandering between figures and announcements)... but I think they certainly had the most impressive line-up.

Sony's lineup was certainly the most energetic and, frankly, surprising. I don't even care for the FF series, but I'll be damned if seeing the fourteenth installment so soon didn't blow me away. I also like how they're pushing the PSP, even going so far as to create a Hannah Montana bundle for teenage girls. Sure, it's a cheap jab at a new audience, but at least it's something. ModNation Racers also looks like a hell of a lot of fun, and their work with motion sensing technology is quite impressive. I'm tempted to write it off as a cash in on Nintendo's method, but the future is the future. To coin a phrase from an ancient marketing campaign, "Get N or get out."

Speaking of Nintendo, it's become increasingly clear that they're not only doing their own unique thing, but doing it well enough that nothing else matters. I'm not going to be stupid and say that Nintendo isn't in the current generation console race (they are. Deal with it), but I will say that they're relying on a completely different market. They know that they can toss out a Mario or a Metroid (good call on the latter, by the way) every now and then and effectively sate the die-hards, but their focus is squarely on a new audience. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though. With such a large install base, they're desirable to more developers looking to entertain some new ideas. So while third party exclusive titles highlighted weren't revelations (The Conduit, Dead Space: Extraction, RE: Darkside Chronicles), it paves the way for other third parties to follow suit. I'm also eager to see what Retro is up to since Team Ninja has taken over Metroid. Really, it's just nice to see third parties actually embrace the Wii.

This brings me to Microsoft, which I will admit I thought had the worst offering. Well, maybe that's too strong a word. Aside from Project Natal, the XBLA content, and Alan Wake, all their new games are sequels/new installments in previously well established franchises. Sure they'll make a killing, but it's nothing new. I don't own a 360, and Microsoft hasn't given me a reason to this year. Though I must admit, Shadow Complex looks pretty cool.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I'm giving the win to Sony this year.

This post was longer than I had intended it to be.

Wait, wait. Madden 10 was a PS3 exclusive? What?

as I keep on trying to tell people, Sony were adamant about MGS4 ONLY, which has indeed stayed an exclusive (never said anything about upcomming MGS titles). Also, very little was said about FF XIII by Sony before it was announced that it was comming to the 360... nevertheless, I do see where your comming from

Yeah, I just edited a few things. Don't take that at face value. As with everything I do in a rushed manner, it's probably laden with errors. :)

I think it's mostly accurate now.

Wait, Kojimas website updated with Metal Gear Rising, but it didn't uppdate with Peace Waler. There's also a large amount of space still left......

Right - although I don't think EA sports do console exclusives?
