Gone Gonzo Posts: 4549 Joined: 25 Feb 2008 | Big hopes for BF3. Nice to hear they're giving DICE lots and lots of time to make it as well. To be honest it's whole success (with me) will depend on how heavy/dumb the DRM in it is. BF2's could be slightly annoying but it worked and kept track of your stats for you. BF 2142 decided I was a pirate after a few weeks (I wasn't) and locked me out, £35 down the drain and the EA's tech support on the issue amounted to 'Fuck You'. #Edit, finally an excuse to splash on a NW falcon... |

- Gimmicky new concepts like the Titan are only as good as the ability to play them lag-free. - Realism comes second place to enjoyability and ease of use (hence why 1942 still has the bigger player base 7 years post-release). - Jets are only fun if you can fly them (criticism of BF2, 2142 solved this somewhat). - Achievements only encourage players to be dicks. - Don't limit the co-op maps to small sizes only. - Anti-Tankers should have enough ammo, and do enough damage, to actually be a threat to tanks. - Give us back our f'ing NAVY! - If you don't include Capture-The-Flag maps, the fans will never forgive you. I'll agree with more ammo - but they did do enough damage, just had to maneuver around the tank. I whore Anti-Tank like a mofo. |

Dumb it down? How the hell would it be dumbed down? MAG will have like 200+ players, and that's a console exclusive. There's also FFXI for Xbox 360, which is an MMO. I doubt it would be dumbed down from consoles. |

Namely: Easy-to-learn, hard-to-master vehicles, not impossible-to-learn, rape-everything-once-you-do vehicles. Anti-Air needs to be effective at you know....destroying air vehicles? Anti-Vehicle Classes need more ammo, and more options. Better weapon balance. (Voss non-withstanding.) Less Gibralter/Karkand, more Minsk/Belgrade/Kubra Dam/Operation Smokescreen. |

the anti-air/vehicle class/emplacements were pretty effective in Bad Company, they'll probably bring it back |

BF2 wasn't bad for this, could be better, but not bad. Light vehicles were still One-shot-kill as they should be, and you could usually get two whole tanks killed for one kit-load of missiles, provided you got at least one or two rear hits. BF2142 was down-right criminal. You had to be damn-near perfect with every shot in order to take out a walker/tank, since it was usually 4 of 5 rounds to kill one. THEN they went and gave them shields and lock-warnings, making it entirely possible that an anti-tank kit couldn't even take out a vehicle. The AA-launcher upgrade being even less reliable and coming at the cost of having any other usable weapons. Two hits should be enough on the average vehicle, three on super-reinforced rare ones. A single AT kit should be capable of killing at least three armored vehicles, with a shot or two for misses and deflected hits. Eight rounds would be fair in an AT kit, they don't get a rifle after all. And AA kits should only be two, maybe three shots, but guaranteed kills if they hit, and the trooper should still have a real rifle. That's my thoughts on it at least.
The Apache from BF-DCFinal comes to mind. In the right hands (mine, for instance), the Apache only has ONE enemy, the Shilka, and the best it can do is 1/3rd damage before I put a pair of hellfire missiles up its tailpipe. But most players back when DCF was current could not fly the helis. Fewer still could actually LAND one intact, and I knew only three who could pull off one-man/two-second flag captures with a little bird (that's dropping right beside the flag, landing at near full-throttle, hopping out, grab the flag, hop back in, and take off while the rotors are still spinning at full. Two seconds on the ground from the second the sled touches dirt to when it lifts up again).
DCFinal comes to mind, stinger missiles which somehow lacked the heat-tracking system. But that was Trauma Team's fan mod, can't blame them... So BF Nam comes to mind next, and oh damn, only ONE of the two sides even gets anti-air, and its heat tracking sucks like Monica Lewinsky under the desk in the oval office. BF2, no AA if I recall... Well, nothing man-pack. The fly-by-wire AT launcher could hit helis now and then, but that's it. And lastly, 2142... The turret emplacements tracked decently, but the damn shields thing made kills near impossible. Also, could only hit air units coming straight on, or flying away. Side hits always missed unless they were going slow. The man-pack, aside from being useless against anything BUT the one or two air units per map, sucked again like Monica Lewinsky. I would say that this would be my response. Also: Finally. But it does pose the question, where the hell is Battlefield Heroes? EDIT: Yes, I know the beta is out. And I'm playing it. See my later post on the matter. |

The beta for Battlefield: Heroes is running right now, you do know that, right? I got a beta key from Gamespot, but I doubt they have anyones left. So unless you're already in the beta, you'll just have to wait until it's released. :P |

Oh yeah, but I'd like to be able to play the game with everyone. I've played the beta to death with random people from the internets, and I kept thinking one thing: "This would be so much more fun with friends." And that, is why I want Battlefield: Heroes to be released fully. |

The computer I'm currently using couldn't handle Heroes, but the friend thing wouldn't really be an issue for me. All of my friends are in the beta as well. :P |

I'm gonna be fiending for this game once we get a release date, I hope I have a computer that will run it properly when it shows up. My computer still struggles a bit with BF2... mostly the MASSIVE load times! |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 700 Joined: 23 Jan 2009 | Sennet: 2142 I feel handled things much better then BF2, in terms of everything, basically. Lets start with the vehicles. FAVs and APCs are moot-points - in both BF2 and 2142 you use them to get where you need to go, and as inpromtu cover. Anything else is suicide. At least in 2142, APCs seve another purpose as a Titan Attack Platform. Tanks are balanced for both sides, even though the PAC one can strafe. And even though they have shields, they'll often only be activated if they know the shot is coming - often after they've been hit the first time too. The shield will basically last the course of a reload - they'll shield will be gone in time for the next hit. They only take 3 hits from the starter kit from the top or sides, 2 from the back. Philum makes it one in the back and 2 elsewhere. Walkers are powerful, but they become huge targets, and they have to huge weakpoints - the back and in-between the legs. One good basic Rocket or Philum ends a walker a lot of times. Air vehicles in 2142 are fairly balanced. The gunships are powerful, but in order to make the most of them, they have to move dangerously slow for some time, allowing any Enigneer to line up shots from multiple angles. Also, Motion Mines on the Titan Hanger Shield never gets old. Unlike the jets of BF2, which are invincable, flying death machines who scoff at any attempt to combat them. Further, for ground-based targets, Engineers have the Motion Mines, which unlike the useless mines in BF2, actually track the target, and though they do slighlty less damage then normal mines, 2 or 3 will destory anything. In addition, for maps heavy with air units, the Engineer can get the SAAW in 2142, which is an excellent anti-air tool. Though ineffective against ground targets, its better then the options of....absolutely nothing in BF2 and BC. Skilled players know that both the Philum and basic Rockets are the most dangerous weapons the Engineers has, and with a sufficently skilled user, the starter Rockets in the Enigneer Kit are more dangerous then the Philum. Further, unlike BF2 and BC, the ground turrets actually dangerous to vehicles. The rail gun hurts....a lot. The anti-air tracks well, and does a huge amount of damage. Unlike in BF2, where you're just another point on the scoreboard if you even try to touch the AA, or in BC, where the AA just tickles the Helios, and the ground turrets are too easily destroyed and never come back. Including this, BF2142 was overall just a better game then BF2. Hell, I'd pay for 2142 all over again if it came with the Frostbite Engine. |

I hope you've played either Battlefield 1942. And by that i really mean, i really hope you've played Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942. Because after playing either of those two games, any Battlefield game was a dissapointment. And believe me, i tried to love Battlefield Vietnam, i tried to love Battlefield 2. All the actual skill was taken out of using any vehicle in that game. I could write a very, very long list about what was wrong with Battlefield 2. I'm not saying DC was perfect, but then it got snuffed out by Dice as they bought their dev team up, before it ever even hit 1.0, and it's still the best 'Battlefield' ever made. |

They umm... didn't notice?
Yeah, except the guns, which are kind of important in an FPS game. Oh and the last time i played this, the moment a vehicle showed up all the infantry became meaningless fleeing target practice so i'm not sure about the balance either. And don't get me started on redeeming the booster packs! |

EA Confirms Battlefield 3
Electronic Arts has confirmed that Battlefield 3 is in the works, saying it's putting a "real concentrated effort" into the game in hopes it can put a dent in Activision's dominance of the military shooter genre.
Released in 2005, Battlefield 2 was the first "modern" combat shooter in the Battlefield series, following Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam, and was a respectable sales success with over one million units sold in the U.S.; the console version, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, fared comparably, puting out 1.2 million copies. But both games pale beside the eight-million-selling Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the 2007 Activision FPS that went on to be the best-selling game of the year.
Modern Warfare 2 is set to come out later this year and Activision is planning for even bigger sales this time around, but EA no longer appears willing to let that thunder go unstolen. "We have a lot of IP in that [shooter] area, and we have not not noticed that Call of Duty has a significant share of that business," EA Chief Operating Officer John Pleasants said during a question-and-answer session with industry analysts. "We are putting a real concentrated effort behind those titles. Battlefield happens to be one of them."
"I've had the luxury of looking at Battlefield 3 over at DICE over in Sweden. I was highly impressed by the way the people were working on that product," he continued. "That's not for this fiscal year [which ends March 31, 2010], but that is a product that is looking very good."
Pleasants said that Battlefield 1943, which is set for digital-only release in September, is also "going well," and that with the Battlefield franchise "strengthening and moving to a service model," he is optimistic about its future. "But it's not our only title which we are hoping to gain share with in the shooter category," he added, noting that EA has high hopes for the upcoming Army of Two: The 40th Day.
