Mirror's Edge 2 in the Works

image

Electronic Arts has confirmed that despite lower-than-anticipated sales, it has begun work on a sequel to Mirror's Edge.

Developed by EA DICE and released in November 2008, Mirror's Edge was seen as a bold venture for EA, introducing fresh gameplay in a unique and pleasantly unlicensed environment. The game reviewed reasonably well but wasn't a big seller, especially by EA's standards, not passing the one million unit sales mark until February 2009. EA DICE Senior Producer Owen O'Brien said in October 2008 that the studio had plans for a Mirror's Edge trilogy but doubts about a sequel began to surface after the game performed below expectations.

But Patrick Soderlund, vice president of EA Games Europe and head of DICE, has now confirmed that at least one more Mirror's Edge game will be forthcoming. "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it," he said. "We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do."

"Mirror's Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move," he continued. "The game wasn't perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think."

No information about platforms or a release target were revealed, but it's good news for fans of the game and also for EA's commitment to new and creative IP development in the future.

Goddamnit EA, every time I try to like you, you do something like this.

I fail to see how, all it means is that they've acquired one more IP they can just release sequels for and not make a new game.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many developers EA actually owns?

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess as many as the number of IPs - 1 for each title now.

Why not, it was a good idea, though a little flawed. With a bit of tweaking it should be pretty good.

I consider this a good thing. It shows that EA is willing to publish a game even if it means it wont make them a lot of money, a trait they did not have a few years ago. I'd wager that Activision would not do that same now.

Nothing wrong with a sequel, it doesn't mean that EA is money hungry for the Mirrors Edge franchise. I think we only need to worry when Mirrors Edge 4 comes out.

Now I haven't beaten Dead Space yet, but does this mean there may be a chance for a sequel of that too?

Wikipedia knows all.

Well, there's gonna be a prequel.

Great! Happy to see that EA is letting DICE continue with this.

I really don't see how this is a bad thing - it's really no different than Assassin's Creed. The first one had a lot of potential but more missteps, which can be potentially rectified with the sequel.

What you're getting with ME2 might be the implication of more sequels to come, but you might be getting a better Mirror's Edge, a GOOD Mirror's Edge, and I don't see that as anything to complain about.

If you're criticizing the company for being complacent, I don't think there's much of an argument there - the first Mirror's Edge was a sales dud, so there's a significant amount of risk in putting money behind a sequel. This is still a somewhat ballsy move. Mirror's Edge is still, in some relative sense, a new IP - it's only been around for a couple years, it's still relatively young in most gamers' minds, especially when compared to EA's other franchises.

Anyway EA has already promised that it's committed to putting out new IPs every year, so it's not like that's going away.

Now they can make the game completely perfect, then they can make it completely shit and sell the good bits in DLC and make twice as much.

I wonder whether Mirror's Edge will become a cult game? I wouldn't be surprised to see its low early sales figures move into low-but-consistent sales for a long time, due to its uniqueness and distinctiveness. We shall see.

At least until the sequel comes out and changes the landscape for the original.

Hopefully they'll focus on the PC market this time around. The console versions were horrible, but the PC version kicked ass.

I see no problem, the original Mirror's Edge was unique and original but just had a few kinks that can be fixed up in the sequel I say give it a chance.

I suppose I'll be the only one yelling but whatever... WOOOOHOOOOO!

If they manage to rectify all the crap they did in the first one then they have themselves a winner... but we talk about EA here so I won't hold my breath.

Indeed, and that's why I love mirror's edge so much.
(also because of the awesome gameplay and jaw-dropping graphics)

Maybe this time it will be decent.

I couldn't get past the sewer level... And I didn't bother for more than 10 minutes.

I'll join in with you!
I kinda hope they put something in to give it a little more replay value though.

I see this as a good thing. Mirror's Edge was fun, but it had flaws... and these flaws could be fixed via a sequel.

I honestly liked Mirrors Edge, a sequel that would fix its problems should be great!

This is EA? They dont focus on any market they just sell as much as they can.

Anyway Mirrors Edge wasnt as good as I thought it would be but the Enviroment was Beautiful even though the story was flawed. The gameplay was quite fun aswell but slightly annoying if you had no weapons to fight back with. If they're going to make this atleast give Faith somesort of Pistol to fight with but make it not that powerful so you'll have to concentrate on the free running more which made the game quite fun.

Same here. I also hope they flesh out the story more. I mean yes, I understood what was going on, but it was very vague.

im gonna be different and say AWESOME!
no, really i mean it

Agreed, the "new and original" card was really only valid when Mirror's Edge was first coming out.

Now they'll be saying "We got rid of the weird Esurance cutscenes, and Faith has slightly bigger breasts!" New and Orginal!

I just hope this Mirrors edge will be MORE outside free-running rather than having more stupid interior puzzles that defeats the very purpose of the game.

Where did you hear that?

Anyways, I'm glad they're doing this; Mirror's Edge was great but flawed to a degree. hopefully sequel will make some solid improvements.

1. No more indoor environments
2. Tell us what's in the packages and work the story around that
3. Free roaming mode

As much as Electronic Arts sucks ( activation and accounts? Screw that...) I loved the Mirrors Edge game. It is very unique and easy to get into. The Story behind Faith is excellent and well thought out and the fact that this is based on a TRUE art form is remarkable indeed.

Looking forward to the new Edge game. If EA was smart they would not change the roles or environments.....just add more missions and tell us what happens to Faiths sister. I hope that she also becomes a Runner.

The indoor missions were just as good as the outdoors. You cannot have outdoors all the time guys. Deal with it.

I'm sure it's going to put a bad taste in everyones mouths, but i trully enjoyed Mirror's Edge and i am very happy that there is a sequal!

Well, yes, but the problems of the first Mirrors Edge are far harder to fix, and are really problems with the concept. Just the two - finicky landings and really really short. You can't exactly fix that with a pistol, a hang glider and Machiavelli.

I'm hopeful that they will succeed this time... Not that the first was bad...

no it doesn't, i'm guessing you've never seen David Belle do a lot of his stuff have you? he has done a bunch of stuff inside buildings too

No I haven't, regardless, many of the interior parts of the levels in mirrors edge just made it feel not like the game it was pictured as, so that really did spoil it to some extent.

I'm glad, I just hope it has a better story this time.
