Fan Recreates Resident Evil 3 In Left 4 Dead Campaign

An ambitious modder is attempting to combine two classics of zombie gaming into one with a full Left 4 Dead campaign modeled after Resident Evil 3.

The campaign, which creator Outatime insists is "not a mod," will feature five separate maps that he hopes will bring "as much of Resident Evil 3 as I can into Left 4 Dead." The campaign will be a full-fledged Left 4 Dead co-operative experience with your favorite L4D characters (perhaps reskinned as a Resident Evil character) traversing Raccoon City in the midst of a zombie outbreak.

Outatime plans to include central locales from RE3 as maps: Raccoon City Streets, Raccoon City Police Department, The Clock Tower, The Hospital, The Park and The Factory. As this is a one-man project and features things like "light, visibility, prop placement, sound, AI, [and] event programming," it'll take Outatime a while to finish. He estimates that it'll be out by the end of this year, but in the meantime, there is a beta version available right now.

The project began some years back before Left 4 Dead even existed, when Outatime's love for the Resident Evil series manifested itself in some attempts to recreate the Raccoon City Police Department in various games, including the Jedi Knight and Half-Life games. Unsurprisingly, he found that Jedi and zombies didn't exactly mix. Then came Left 4 Dead, which recently saw the release of authoring tools, which must have pushed development of the RE3 project forward dramatically.

What Outatime's got so far is mighty impressive, and should bring back plenty of memories of Resident Evil 3. Of course it also begs the question: Zoey or Jill Valentine? I'll leave that up to you kids to decide.

Hold up... In which way is this "not a mod"?

That's pretty damn impressive, I haven't played RE3 in years but still remember that street section. Good times.

Fans are too clever these days. What's wrong with a drawing like mine?

I smell a counting error. XD

Also, this is pretty damn kickass. I looooove Resident Evil.

Wow, Thats brilliant. Would have prefered Resident Evil 2 though ;)

Cool i guess, but ive given up on RE so ill just stick with the original L4D.

I dunno, I stole it from Google, really.

Wow that was really sweet.

And to answer your question BOTH!!!!!!

Very cool.

Fan made maps always have some sort of "shitty" feeling to them.

Here's what Outatime says:

"First and foremost, this is a campaign, not a mod. I'll try to throw in custom content beyond what you see in Left 4 dead, but this is not a mod."

Sooo out of curiosity (i've been confined to a mac for a little over a year now, no valve :(!! ) does Left 4 Dead have the option to play either First Person or 3rd Person? Cause I haven't seen third person before this vid.

A mod is something like this:

It fundamentally changes the way a game is played. For example, Counter-Strike is a mod of Half-Life.

A map does not fundamentally alter the gameplay, it only alters where you play the game. A campaign is a series of maps.

If that doesn't make sense, think of it like this:

That is a mod for the game HL2.

Nice.

Oh, you whore.

True. While it may "look" like Raccoon City, these people usually have no idea of what makes a good level (no notion of Level Design, in other words)

I think it's falling off.

Of course it also begs the question: Zoey or Jill Valentine? I'll leave that up to you kids to decide.

Zoey is the winner. Jill can stfu and gtfo. Sounds like an interesting "not a" mod.

If you enter a certain command in the console you can go into third a person (like gears of war gameplay) look and just play. I don't remember the command because actually playing with that thing is hell...

Damn I really miss those old RE's. 4 and 5 was just crap imo. Good old fashion slow zombies in a horror game > olympic athlete zombies in an action game.

Zoey. No question.

How come he gets news, but while I'm slaving over a hot modding program, rewriting scripts and designing my own character models for the Infected, I get nothing but spurned?? I'm making a lot of things for Left 4 Dead, and Fallout 3, and yet I see no recognition!

If it's done right this will be awesome. I eagerly await the fun and wonky glitches.

Well, I think it's a hunter. Or maybe it was a parkourist in its previously life.

Looks pretty good!

The mod community hasn't really pushed out much for L4D, but then again the mod tools haven't been active for that long.

Ahhh, cheers thanks!

always is more than a bit harsh. while most fan made maps do suck the fact is though that there are some damn good ones out there. for example, some of the most popular counterstrike maps were made by fans and NOT the orginal creators of cs. same goes for unreal tournament and 2k4, quake 1-3, doom, etc. to say that this is going to be shitty is asanine for the simple fact that you, nor anyone, has played it yet. for all you know it could turn out to be the de_dust2 of left 4 dead.

The funny thing here is that even when the framerates "drop dramatically" they're still twice as good as the framerate I got.

Zoey.

And I'd prefer RE4, seems it'd fit the game more.

I do believe the modding society has started to slack lately. Either that or 3D games are just harder to make custom content for.

I dread to think how long it took the poor fellow who designed a Splinter Cell Chaos Theory map version of the Shadow Moses facility from Metal Gear Solid.

ahh resident evil 3 the game that scared the shit out of me when i was a 3 year old kid so i ran crying home thru half of my hometown which is kinda small...

I just wonder how it is going to handle the smoker and hunter. I mean if you are playing solo then you're screwed if you come across one of them.
Anyway that looks fucking amazing. I also can not wait until the Dawn of the Dead mall map is finished.
If the guy somehow manages to put in the special zombie from RE2 that you only get if you do not pick up anything then he will officially be my god.

That sounds crazy awesome. Heh, I guess we won't have to worry about bad dialogue though, since Valve hasn't seen fit to grace us with that much corny dialogue in L4D.

It brings back memories, it would be awesome if Nemesis was in there in some way.
