Its not very likely someone who has heard off Call of Duty, and yet remained oblivious to Modern Warfare.
Good. That means we get less little kids who only recognize the game because it has Call of Duty stapled on the front.
Well that seems like basic marketing common sense, guess their marketing department isnt so bright.
I agree with the decision, it makes this identifiable as a separate franchise. CoD:4 2 just doesn't have the same ring to it.
who didn't see this coming? We all knew it would happen when it was first announced as Modern Warfare 2.. Most people who were hooked on the game never called it Modern Warfare, it was COD4.
Not too surprising. And Modern Warfare 2 does sound much better that 'CoD 4 2' or
Sounds like the simplest solution would be to call it Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
I'm not sure I trust that report. When I hear "Call of Duty" all I think is "oh god, another lame WWII game *sigh*". Modern Warfare 2 is more appealing. If they market it correctly, they can get past the CoD prefix and develop their own series.
Plus, this is an online servey, might I add... So, how many people fill that in?
I'm sorry I suffer from a condition I call "marketing-ese aphasia", making it so I can't listen to anyone who uses the phrase "must have" to describe a videogame.
This is what people posting "first!" sound like. It's not clever, and it's not funny. Don't do it. Now, this news doesn't exactly surprise me. The Call of Duty series is embedded into the gaming scene, and obviously, taking out the more known title is going to lower brand recognition. However, with some proper marketing, they could do well - it'll need it, though.
I'm not surprised, frankly.
I always thought of the first modern warfare as CoD4, the rest was just pointless subtext. I didn't really pay attention to it until it was announced that they were making it the title of the series.
Dropping the name seemed like a dubious idea from the start. Considering Call of Duty was first developed by Infinity Ward, you'd think they'd want to use the brand they created.
maybe now they'll be less 12 year old racist homophobes on Xbox Live since they didn't know CoD 6...err, Modern Warfare 2 was out
Thats interesting, makes me wonder what they'll call the future titles
Meh, never really cared for Modern Warfare, I liked W@W better
Give it...2 weeks after MW2's release, it will be the hot topic in the gaming industry.
I'm glad they dont have the CoD in the name anymore, it helps them separate themselves from the shitty games treyarch makes.
Hear, hear! | |
The secret to all this marketing voodoo? It's bullshit. They just need to advertise and hype the game more, and I mean good ad's not those shitty gamestop ones. Kick that hype machine into overdrive, ESPECIALLY use the internet. I'm not seeing that. Why do so many companies rely only on magazines and tradeshows (that only those magazines can go to)?
Like it really matters, any hardcore gamer and many casual gamers already call it Modern Warfare 2 since adding th Call Of Duty just makes it a mouthful. Anyone who has already wanted the game already know what it's called
CoD 6: MF 2 | |
I think it's a good step.
They need more ads in the half time breaks of sporting events. That'll solve the problem.
Actually a bunch of my non-gamer friends only have CoD: WaW because of Nazi Zombies and have no idea its a sequel
Well I'm gonna miss that title. It just has such a history behind it. Good times (Like Big red one and Modern Warfare)and Bad times (World at War....A very very big drop in the franchise.) But now it is gone and it will hopefully rest in peace.
Could you imagine if they keep the Call of Duty name, and later release a Game of the Year edition? The full title would be "Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2: Game of the Year edition".
That would indeed be the simplest solution. I concur wholeheartedly. Good day sir, I doff my hat at thee!
Havta agree with this, Infinity Ward should keep it as far away from association with Treyarch as possible.I'm not saying Treyarch are crap at everything, just think their involvement with the Call of Duty series hasn't done it any favours so far
Which is what I'm positive they will change it back to soon enough. I normally wouldn't assume so, but if they are claiming they want this to be the best selling game of all time then they need to call it Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And I think they will, Activision are nice like that.
Okay let's lay down the brass tracks here. Yes, IW are infinitely better than Treyarch, but Treyarch are not bad developers, at all. Call of Duty's 3 and 5 were both solid and great respectively, but obviously not as good as 2 and 4.
Only the people who aren't looking at Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 Awareness Dips Without "Call of Duty" Name
Activision's decision to drop the Call of Duty name from Modern Warfare 2 has cost the publisher a huge amount of brand awareness, according to tracking firm OTX.
Whatever the logic was behind Activision's decision to divorce the Call of Duty name from Modern Warfare 2, the move seems to be having some negative effects on consumers' long-term interest in the game. According to figures from tracking firm OTX that was acquired by Gamasutra, brand awareness of the title among gamers dropped dramatically after the "Call of Duty" tag was abandoned.
When OTX was tracking interest in the game as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 40% of gamers knew about it. However, "once it became clear that Activision was positioning the title as Modern Warfare 2, OTX removed 'Call of Duty' from the consumer survey, and the awareness levels dropped to 20 percent," said Nick Williams of the GamePlan Insights division for OTX.
So, the Call of Duty name alone doubles the awareness of a game. This shouldn't be too surprising - it's been my impression that in common gamer discourse the first Modern Warfare is typically referred to as CoD4 more than Modern Warfare. But to see that the Modern Warfare name doesn't stand nearly as well on its own is a bit alarming - does this figure as a backfire for Activision?
According to OTX, Modern Warfare ranked high in its post-E3 consumer purchase intent rankings, but still trailed behind five other big titles, which isn't really a good indicator considering how many copies of Modern Warfare 2 Activision is saying that it'll sell this year.
Of course, there's plenty of time before the game comes out, and judging by the promotional campaign Activision has already put on the game, Modern Warfare 2 might be more ubiquitous and powerful a brand than Call of Duty by year's end. Furthermore, despite the drop in brand awareness, Modern Warfare 2 is still faring well - it has the highest "pre-order intent" for any game right now, according to OTX.
"Even without the Call of Duty association, it is still perceived as a must have title," Williams said. I don't think we need to worry about Modern Warfare 2 not selling well. I just kinda miss the Call of Duty name. Oh well, makes my life easier. Fewer colons to type out.
