NPD: More Female Gamers In 2009

Female gamers are on the rise this year compared to last, according to a new study by the NPD Group, and it's not just the Wii that they're playing.

Well, it's mostly the Wii that they're playing. The NPD's Gamer Segmentation 2009 report, which tracks activity across several categories of gamers, found that females increased by five percent in the category of Console Gamers, increasing from 23 percent to 28 percent in 2009. At the same time, usage of the Wii increased by 19 percent from last year, which the NPD sees as underscoring "the finding that more females are using console systems, especially the Wii."

The percentage of females increased in other categories as well, moving up by four percentage points in the Heavy Portable and Extreme Gamers categories. The growth of the console demographic, however, is the most significant, the NPD thinks.

"Last year was one of the most transformative in history in terms of defining the audience for gaming, said Anita Frazier, analyst at the NPD. "Even with the increased competition from mobile and social network gaming, the console gamer segment added the most new participants to its ranks in the last year."

So what's an Extreme Gamer, you ask? It's got nothing to do with whether or not you skateboard or listen to noisy music - apparently someone who plays an average of 39 hours a week qualifies as Extreme. These people, the NPD says, buy more games than any other category of gamer (despite having the lowest income), but actually have very little impact on the industry as a whole, since they only make up four percent of total gamers. Hate to break it to you guys, but I guess you're not so extreme after all.

Well, that's not really that important, since as gaming become mainstream more and more layers of the populations will obviously become gamers, until its use becomes more or less homogenous by the time it's not considered a novelty any more. Also, why can't I find any of those gamer girls, I mean, seriously.

Lol. Extreme? 39 hours? Not anymore.

But I used to do that... When you just play 12 hour sessions or longer, and don't really take much in the way of breaks inbetween... Yeah. It's possible. >.<

Interesting overall trend though.

Only 39 hours a week?
There are 168 hours in a week, so that's about 23% of their time, including sleeping.

I suppose it's not surprising they only make up 4% of total gamers, 39 hours a week pretty much means they don't have a full time job. Which would also explain having the lowest income.

So the punchline of this article is that now our wii-waggling jokes should include girls? =)

Nice picture.

Because you don't live where I live. I am friends with several girls who play anything from pokemon to SSB to Halo. Their not that hard o find, but if you want to get a girl to play the games you like, then you have star off with something that doesn't require you to use every single button on the controller.

I like it when you find a really good girl gamer.
Some guys can't take being outplayed by girls, to which I remind those guys EVERY time a girl beats them :p

This is great! Playing Halo 3 online will never be the same again though..........

But seriously, this is fantastic :)

I'm a gamer girl. Granted I don't play every single hour upon hour but I do love to play video games to relax and gear down from a long day. It's always full of fun times.

I'm lucky enough to not have any girl gamers as friends that could get a real kill in any given game, much less beat me.

My friend's ex once tried COD 4 and never once touched the right stick. Guess which way her K-D ratio swung?

I like how people keep track of how many females are playing games.

TO THE LEFT! She must be amazing if she didn't touch her right stick ONCE! Thats awesome! I mean... DAMN!

Well hey the more the merrier. Although i dont get why its a big deal.

Who cares?

39 hours a week? Thats about 5 1/2 hours a day, how many people really have the time to play that many games?

Five and a half hours a day is "long"? Whoo-boy, you must have one of those "job" thingies.

It is a big deal not because they are females but the impact the growing demographic is making on society to accept video games as a social medium instead of being blamed and demonized.

Organizations like the ECA represent the positive side of gaming where gamers are proactive and go against the negative sterotypes and publicity that appears in the medium.

Or to simply quote moviebob in his violence gameoverthinker video "Do playing video games make teenagers go from gamers to bank robbers".

She's slightly better than my little brother.

Kinda have to when you grow older, go to university and don't have mom to pay for them.

Gamer Girls existed before this, they were just very very good at hiding themselves. Like Ninjas, only better.

They also keep track of age brackets, income, and all kinds of things. It's called marketing research.

Wow, only out for a few days, and already there's a relevant discussion to link Daniel Floyd's new video to.

Do I sense some snark?

I think girl players need more respect online, most guys online are assholes, ESPECIALY on halo 3, if they found out a player was a girl they would just teabag her corpse the entire game, its a shame that girls cant be more open in online games, i honestly say that girls are smarter and more mature then guys 100% of the time

Ooh, thanks much for the link. Been anxious for another one of his videos

Extreme? Nah, Extreme is 39 hours per day! ;)

My goal is to become an extreme gamer and get paid for it. Hmm...the Game Informer offices are only a 20 minute drive away...

meh so

I have only seen one in my local wallmart. I thought they didn't exist in my town. I seen some in the city.

The_root_of_all_evil:

I see your 39 hours and raise you 40!

Ah how did i ever live without that time machine :D

I've probably played games for 5 1/2 hours on some days but every day really is extreme. No wonder I never meet any girl gamers, they're obviously more hardcore than I thought.

Girls are playing games oh noes!

If there was something in the female gene stopping them from playing games, and some where then I would be interested. As it is I don't really care. It's good they're playing. I'm just dreading that small minority of girl gamers who will still go 'Yes, I know how shocking this is...a GIRL playing a game! but it's ok, i'm only a GIRL (please gift me attention and come onto me I don't get much attention anywhere else)

To paraphrase, "The proud, the few."

More female gamers, woo.

I have a hunch that thinking 39 hours a week is a lot makes me weird ._.
