Serious Sam HD is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade and PC later this year but PlayStation 3 owners are going to miss out unless they make some noise about wanting it - and are willing to wait for it.
A PlayStation version of the forthcoming Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD, announced for the PC and Xbox Live Arcade last week, was originally planned when the studio started developing the game, but as CEO Roman Ribaric explained, money, timing and a perceived lack of interest all conspired to bring that plan to a halt. He said the studio couldn't get the funding it needed to simultaneously develop a PS3 version and response to the idea of doing a PlayStation Network release several months after the game had debuted on the PC and XBLA was unenthusiastic.
"We [have considered] doing PSN after we finish PC and XBLA," he told G4tv.com. "However, we keep hearing over and over from publishers, investors, marketing and other suits that players from one console, in this case PSN, wouldn't want to get it later, let's say eight months and seven days after, if it's released sooner on the other console, here that would be XBLA. I would normally say that's a lot of bull, but I will refrain here from my comment."
But he implied that despite what the "suits" think, a PSN version could still happen if there's sufficient demand for it. "It would feel perfect to have it on PSN as well," he said. "However, we are a garage team of 20 people, although with a larger garage now, working on Serious Sam HD for PC and XBLA platforms. Along [with] that, we are developing Serious Sam 3 and Serious Engine 3 tech for both platforms."
And, he noted, any PlayStation release would have to wait until after the game was launched on the other platforms."I know we are good, but we are not that good to add PSN and finish at the same time," he added. "Just kidding, we are that good, but we are not supermen."
So what about it, PlayStation fans? Is it worth Croteam's time to bring this seriously awesome shooter to your platform of choice, or is two out of three good enough? Let us - and them - know what you think!
I played this way back on the PC and it was some serious fun but there are already too many PSN titles worth buying now, I doubt it would do well.
Did you happen to read the article? It's not coming out now, if it does. It will come out later, if it does.
Also, passing on choice? For serious broseph?
Yep, I read it. I doubt it would do well on the PSN, so they shouldn't spend that kind of effort producing and porting it. I won't be shouting out for it, that's all I'm saying.
I don't have a PS3, but I'll simply say: the more the merrier. Let those PS3 owners enjoy it as well, I'll just get it off Xbox Live Arcade. Never had a chance to play this, would love to.
Malygris: "However, we keep hearing over and over from publishers, investors, marketing and other suits that players from one console, in this case PSN, wouldn't want to get it later, let's say eight months and seven days after...
Bull-fucking-shit! I want this game on the PS3! What do they think us PS3 owners are a bunch of tightwads? Edit: Why not release it on the PS3? The more the merrier, plus maybe, just maybe they might make some good money. Last time I checked Wolfenstein 3D was one of the top sellers on the PS3. Serious Sam will be different I suppose. Those 'suits' should get their facts sorted out.
Hardcore_gamer: I hated the game so i don't care, the models look like shit just like the majority of models from early 90's full 3D games.
I would take good looking sprites over shitty looking 3D models any day.
But... But... Fun gameplay! Good story! Both of these things are more important than graphics, and Serious Sam has them.
Also, it's an HD remake, so your argument makes no sense. I say Serious Sam for the PS3!
By "remake" they probably mean a HD version of the same game with some nice little visual improvements. I really doubt they will actually create new models for the game.
Meh. To be honest, if I wanted an over the top FPS, I'd likely be fine with Punisher: No Mercy. Why would I need this? Its a nice gesture, but they really shouldn't go through all that trouble if the market is already pretty well satisfied.
This is seriously, like, awesome, maybe? I have seriously not played the Serious Sam games so I'm seriously anxious to see if I can seriously, like, seriously, play the games that people have been so serious about.
Seriously.
(ho ho, more puns from the ever clever bever Jumplion)

Serious Sam HD uses Croteam's new Engine, Serious Engine 3. New models and all I gather. Seriously (the site) has a forum up about it with questions asked / answered / unanswered. Looks like fun to me, but I loved the original.

I'm only partway through the original first encounter at the moment but how is the story any good? It's appalling! I didn't have a clue why I was running around to get those elements nor did I get why Sam was after an artefact that he didn't know what it did. Why were there undead running around ancient egypt? As I said I'm only partway through, up to thebes, but the story is terrible! Don't get me wrong I like the gameplay and the encounters are fun and challenging and it's one of the best shooters I've played despite the dated grpahics but why praise the story of all things?

The storyline is genius. It's the ultimate in "Enemy is here, go kill.", stripping away every attempt from stuff like Halo and Killzone to give any kind of justification for giving you increasingly large guns and sending you at increasing waves of enemies. I guess I like it because it's a story that knows it's an absurd situation and is one of the few that doesn't try to cover it up.

The storyline is just a convenient excuse to blow stuff up and it does remove some of the pretensions to seriousness that something like GOW has but you can miss it if you don't look for it. I'd collected two of the element before I realised that all the info I was going to get was the texts from the computer who was really just there to explain weapons and complement me on being a badass. Although I admit that it does well enough to fit in ridiculously large weapons, like the cannon. Good times.
Jsnoopy: Surprised that the the PSN members were unenthusiastic about it.
Says a lot about the quality of the games we have otherwise, doesn't it?
No, not really. I think that no matter how many good games you have, there is always room for more, no?
I think my credit card would disagree. I'm normally a frugal person, but whenever there's a good new game up on the PsN I compulsively buy it. This has become very problematic.
Simply put: Yes! I want Serious Sam to come back to us and I want him to spread not only guts but the sheer admiration for him amongst as many players as there are.
Keep it easy on me here, as this really is a very private opinion now, but as someone who considers getting a PS3 soon that would be deffo a nice addition to me, as I dig the Serious Sam games ever since I had the Demo on the PC. I bought it, got the X-box version for little bit of extra content and if I have to pay again for a version on the PS3, gladly!
Sam is just the pure essence of a simple, nicely done, good looking and humorous shooter, of which we really really really need more in gaming in total... (is currently on Honeymoon with God Hand for the PS2 and is in sodomy-heaven due to it'S difficulty and grand humor)
And I really can't believe it but there are actual people who never even heard of Sam, which is really a shame in my opinion, because while people rant on about games being meant to be fun and keep on grinding WoW like a 2nd job (Don't beat me up, I also play WoW and am not a casual) need another laugh then and again.
Remember Yahtzee's "No More Heroes" review? If not, look it up and then check the Serious Sam trailers to get reminded that humor is still a mighty and painfully often neglected ingredient for a good, fun, mindless and overall enjoyable game...
Croteam Interested in Serious Sam HD on PS3, But Are You?
