Uncharted Is Coming to the Big Screen

image

Sony has inked a deal with Columbia Pictures to produce a big screen adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Nathan Drake's ready for his close-up, as Sony has announced that it has penned a deal with Columbia Pictures to give Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune a big screen adaptation. The film will be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad and Alex Gartner, whose credits include many of the Marvel superhero movies, The Dark Knight, Get Smart and more.

"We have been working with Avi and the folks and Columbia for quite some time and look forward to sharing additional details on the film in the short future," Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells said. "Obviously we designed the game to be a cinematic experience and we too can't wait to see it on the big screen."

According to IMDB, the screenplay will be written by Kyle Ward. That name might be sound familiar to you: Ward is quickly becoming the go-to guy for game-to-movie adaptations in Hollywood, having written the Kane & Lynch script as well as the recently announced Hitman sequel. No word on how the movie will treat its source material, but you can probably rest assured series hero Nathan Drake will be in there somewhere.

Which of course sets in motion the fanboy favorite tradition of playing casting director for the movie adaptation of your favorite game. Who should play Nathan Drake? Firefly's Nathan Fillion seems like a natural fit (and they have the same name too), but that probably makes too much sense to actually happen. Instead, my money will be on Mark Wahlberg, just because I like Mark Wahlberg. If not him, how about, uh, Tyrese? Yeah. Tyrese. That'll do.

Ho-ho-ho-hold your horses.

Isn't the story just some guy running around looking for treasures, encountering bad guys and shooting some people?

Indiana Jones has already done that, y'know, and National Treasure has already copied Indiana Jones, too..

But I could be wrong about the story, so please, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all been done before. I wish people would stop doing this. If your going to create a video game movie choose something that hasn't been done before. I'm sure Uncharted is a great game, but it's basically Indiana Jones.

There's zombies...and...there's a girl...and an old guy.

I agree with the other sentiments, why does Uncharted need to be made into a film? What does it gain through the transition?

I suppose I should be pleased that more "adventure" movies will be making their way to the screen, but I have a bad feeling that Uncharted will, of course, be a piece of crap... you know... being a videogame movie and all.

Uncharted as movie a.k.a new male tomb raider clone.

Why? This genre as been done to death...

Meh...

Sounds.. Original..

This movie would be an adaptation of a game which is a homage to a movie.

We have truly entered Bizzaroworld. On the plus side, I can actually see this being made.

I would watch it, just to say i have watched a game that wasn't MGS4

So I'm going to be paying to see Indiana Jones, eh could still be better than the fourth.

Even if it is just like Indiana Jones, if it's a good movie then that shouldn't matter. Although I've never played the game so I could be wrong.

Why will they make this crap, and not make a Warhammer movie.

Hm... sounds interesting. I fucking love Uncharted, so it could kick ass. As long as the director knows what to do.

Hey kids! Here comes another shitty Indiana Jones ripoff! In theatres soon!

So wait the video game that was pretty much like a movie is going to be made into a movie...what is the point of watching a movie that people already played through?

It's a movie based on a video game. Therefore, we must believe it "teh suxzorz!" before we even know what it's going to do!

....though part of me thinks that Uncharted is damn near perfect for this (much better than Shadow of the Fucking Colosus being a movie!) because it's practically is a summer blockbuster movie, filled with explosions, treasure, sexual inuendo ("Is that a knife or are you just happy to see me?" "Can't it be both?"), and a sarcastic-yet-lovable hero we can all root for!

Starring Chuck Norris as Nathan Drake, Chuck Norris and Sully, Chuck Norris as Elana, and Chuck Norris as the notorious bad guy!

....Directed by Chuck Norris!

You should probably you know... play ANY of the games you rip on, that way you wouldn't just come off like a 360 fanboy all the time.

Yes, but I loved the original indiana jones movies. I'd love to see them returned to their former greatness in the form of a new franchise, with new characters, and no nazis.

More racism...

The oppression will never end. -_-

Aren't superhero movies about a person discovering or developing superpowers, then using them to fight crime? Didn't Superman do that before all the others?

Its a genre, man.

Ehh... the game wasn't really racist, people just like to portray it as such because Drake was white and the game took place in south/central america. The main bad dude was a rich white guy. Sure he gets betrayed by his underpaid south american grunt worker, but even he is almost as white as drake himself. In fact, he's like a slightly darker version of drake with a spanish accent.

Besides, I'd imagine you get oppressed more for being a furry than for being a minority.

The story is actually a lot of fun, mostly because -- unlike so many other games -- the characters are well developed and well acted. This could absolutely make for a great, fun movie. Unless they don't cast Nathan Fillion. In which case a pox on all their houses. Or something.

Besides, after Resident Evil 5 and its spear chuckers (I hope thats not actually a racial slur), Uncharted's claim to racism falls laughably short.

Oh man! Nathan Fillion would make the BEST Drake ever. Let's all petition Columbia Pictures to get Nathan into that roll.

I don't care how bad it is, if they actually got Fillion to play Drake I'd see it at least three times. Also, what am I saying... Nothing with Nathan Fillion could ever possibly be bad.

"Isn't the story" and "I could be wrong, so please, correct me if I'm wrong." isn't obvious enough about that I'm just saying it from what I've heard? The game hasn't got enough good reviews to warrant a purchase from me, and I have no friends who own a PS3, and you pretty much can't rent games in Sweden.

I just don't understand this mentality that anytime treasure hunting is involved everyone suddenly assumes they're copying indiana jones. Does everyone think that Indiana Jones was the first story-line to ever revolve around treasure hunting? There were plenty of stories, long before Indiana Jones, which involved the search for treasure. It's a common story arc.

It's not Drake has a fedora or a whip or looks anything remotely like Harrison Ford. There aren't any nazis either.

In one display of sheer awesomeness, you have been awarded the "best person on the internet" and as a reward you revieve 2 internet cookies. They are waiting below.

Starring David Hasselhoff as Nathan Drake. (It could work)

Exactly.

The game is practically a movie, so I could see this working.

They can't really screw this up...well atleast they can't possibly get worse than the Transformers movie (May god have mercy on it's soul).

Yes it is coming to the big screen. Just like the Halo, Gears of War, God of War, and Grand Theft Auto movies that didn't make it through pre-production. Seriously I'm sick and tired of websites like IGN stating things like: "God of War movie coming!" when it's not even through pre-production.

9 times out of ten, thats from a falling out between the IP owner and the studio. As Sony is both in this case, thats unlikely.

Is anyone truly surprised anymore that a (moderately?) successful game is being made into a film? It seems like Hollywood is running out of original ideas fast and trawling the depths of video gaming for something to do.

That said, this could be an alright film. I shall wait and see how the trailers and such look before judging.

Oh great well personally found the game a little bland and was confused why drake was American then again anybody with English accent has to be a bad guy. Also the director hasn't done anything of mention so no high hopes just hope when it reaches the UK its straight to DVD release.
