Rappin' Against Piracy in Don't Copy That 2

The 1992 anti-piracy video Don't Copy That Floppy is being updated for the digital age with a new video that features a SWAT team, your mom, hard times in prison and a very special surprise bonus.

Videogame piracy is hardly a new problem. For as long as there have been games, there have been people who copy and share them with others. As far back as 1992, in fact, the problem was considered serious enough that the Software Publishers Association released a [public service announcement urging people not to share games entitled Don't Copy That Floppy, featuring a memorable performance by rapper MC Double Def DP the Disc Protector.

I have no idea what kind of impact the video had on piracy figures - very little, I would guess - but it appears that the Software and Information Industry Association sees something it likes in MC Double Def. The organization is bringing back the Disc Protector and updating the concept for the current generation, with plans to unleash a new video later this summer. A teaser for the upcoming public service announcement is available now.

While it's every bit as hilariously cheesy as the 1992 video, Don't Copy That 2 is far more entertaining in every possible way. I don't want to spoil any surprises because this is something that really needs to be experienced with an open mind, but I will say this: Watch it all the way to the end. You won't be disappointed.

wow, that was......different? Do they really think that will stop someone from pirating or copying games and music? But that just made my day. I can go to work with a smile.

All I can say is...

What the fuck was that.

But the Star Trek thing at the end was funny.

... ok... that was different.

Won't change a thing though.

....Speachless.....

Kahless copied floppies like nobody's business. Why are we supposed to believe he was being dishonorable, huh?

nuqneH

LOL "In any language its not just a copy, its a crime" ....except in Swedish.

My prediction: DCT2 will be the MOST pirated movie this year.

How exactly is this gonna stop people?

Pretty much the only way to stop it is to make piracy a capital crime.

One copy of Family Guy = your head on a chopping block.

Yes, file-sharing is a crime... WE GET IT!

I have one question though: why is it a crime? Not why as in "because the big corporations whine a lot", but as in "why our governments listen to their whine"...

The video was kind of funny though.

--Xvito, keeping it excellent.

WTF moment of the day lol. Thanks for sharing.

I laughed so hard when I saw the original!

What are you trying to say?

I'm going to gess none of you are old enough to have seen the original in school. True this wont change anything just like the original didn't change anything. But the point here is that it is funny. Mainly in the unintentional way.

That was so stupid that I'm actually embarrassed to have watched even the teaser for it.

I might go pirate something out of spite.

Wow... this makes me want to pirate. Sorry but showing a kid going to jail and shit for a minor crime is a joke. The more of these I see the more against them I become like the ever classic "PIRACY FUNDS TERRORISM!!!"
Oh noes! I copied linkin park then the trade towers got attacked! \0/
... Wonder what would happen if I got Death Magnetic. Would it be the pentagon this time? >.>

Hmm in a few years this may be very incorrect. May have to amend it "In any language (except sweedish as piracy is legal there) its not just a copy, it is a crime."

No there is no way that humor was unintentional.

Companies, the most evil tihngs on Earth who drive Government into ruin and take away peoples jobs, exploit whole countries etc tel US to stop pirating, that's like a mass murderer/rapist telling me to stop beating him up. Yeah, right.

One word.

Gay.

I think Ill go download some movies or music illegally now, just because I can.

I'm pretty sure we do?

It's in Swedish, so I'll summarize it for those of you who don't speak it. It's a publication from the Swedish Government explaining Swedish copyright and how you aren't allowed to share copyrighted material without the expressed permission of the copyright holder.

Considering that there's hardly anybody who has never downloaded anything or watched a copyrighted video on youtube, a law saying that over half the population would die is going to result in a massive uprising instead.

I'm not so sure to be honest.
But who knows? It was funny none the less.

It's a crime?
Yeah, yeah, I get it.
And now I'm off to the pirate bay.
(to download legal content of course)

Does this remind anyone else of the ""No Cussing" Video made not too long ago?

I assume that (like with the No Cussing Rap) we will soon see a bunch of mildly funny remixes pop up.

are you fucking kidding me?

this sort of FUD campaign has to be illegal, it just has to be.

im sorry but this sort of misinformation campaign solely designed to scare people should be subjected to legal sanction.

at the very least this sort of campaign designed to brainwash children violates every single moral tenant of modern day society. private market should in no way shape or form have this much influence in social life.

They used to say that home taping would kill the music industry... seems its a really slow death.

Why doesn't copyright work in a similar fashion to patent law?

Copyright gives you til the end of your life plus 70 years... how does that help creativity?

Why does it always appear that our governments are in the pockets of big business?

Why did Bernie Madoff get 150 years, but a murderer can get 20?

MaxTheReaper:

ditto. that made me [b]want[/b[ to pirate, which is clearly not the idea here. that was the stupidest video ever. wit the exception of the first dony copy that floppy.

also clearly piracy is having an effect on the industry, because they were the worst production values ever. who has ever seen swat looking like that.

Information capitalism sucks, we need information communism. No copyrights, no patents, emphasis on community, donation based development using foundations,a massive network of volunteers all over the world to do parts of a game / movie / song / book / anything, voluntarily payments, grassroots culture...

If one day everyone pirated media instead of buying for it, this is what would inevitably happen.

I dont know why, but I feel ive just been massively trolled watching this vid

People make such a big deal out of piracy these days.

Pff that'll never work this on the other hand....

Every time you pirate a music, game, movie, or program, God kills a kitten.
Don't be a pirate.

reminds me of this: http://cristgaming.com/pirate.swf

Sevre90210:

Yeah, it's not like it's harming anyone. Game Developers get a load of money from those who don't pirate anyway.

Same here. *heads over to mininova to plunder some booty*

i still think this vid says it best

plus, since when can you be put in prison for downloading a videogame?

edit: well, either i suck at tags, or FF is slow, but here is the link just to be sure

This anti-piracy thing is like the anti-drug thing that picked up in the 80's and continues today; it's overzealous, panicky, based on fear, and creates hilarious pieces of propaganda like anti-drug PSA's or the first Don't Copy That Floppy for our amusement (and don't forget the "Winners don't do drugs" screen, classic).
