After more than 50 years of operating under the title Midway, the troubled Mortal Kombat developer will officially adopt a Warner Bros. name this coming Monday.
The months-log saga of the trials and tribulations of Mortal Kombat parent Midway Games may finally be coming to an end. After nearly going bankrupt, considering selling off their rights to MK, and assortedlegal difficulties, and every other problem imaginable under the sun, Midway finally found salvation under the wing of media giant Warner Bros.
That salvation, though, comes at a price - this coming Monday, reports TRMK, Midway will be ditching the moniker it had since the company was originally founded back in 1958 (as Midway Mfg. Co., a manufacturer of amusement park equipment). The news has been confirmed via Twitter (as all things are nowadays), specifically the Tweets of Midway employees Hector Sanchez and HansLo.
On Monday the 13th, Midway will officially adopt a name that puts it under Warner Bros. umbrella - TRMK speculates that they'll adapt something related to the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment name, which does probably seem like the best bet at the moment.
Work on Mortal Kombat 9 (and any other titles in production) should not be affected as the only reported change is the title of the company. Even so, Midway was a huge name in the business in the mid-90s MK heyday, so ... well, it feels a bit strange, doesn't it? "Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Update: Well, maybe not. Midway's Geoff Mogilner told Joystiq that the matter was far from clear-cut. "The name and the mark are owned by Warner Bros. and it is up to them to figure out the branding strategy," he said. "[WB] bought the assets and the trademark and all the copyrights and the logo and all that ... to say the name is dead, it's silly but, ya know, it's premature -- the company Midway Games, Inc. still exists."
I guess if they keep the same staff then the damage won't extend beyond a destroyed heritage.
Having said that, it'd suck if they found themselves having to pander to Warner Bros' more family-friendly whims; I'd hate to see the creative spark snuffed out.
They've dealt a blow to my childhood, but if they have the same developers working there then its much less destructive. Hopefully the next MK game won't feature tight wearing adventures. *slaps Midway*
☟lol typo. The months-log saga of the trials and tribulations of Mortal Kombat parent Midway
No, in all seriousness I really liked midway. They gave us not only Mortal Kombat, but gauntlet too. They were a big part of my childhood and now they've converted to the dark-side.
That's a shame. But then again, "Midway" only released like umm...MK vs DC,Stranglehold(I know there's another one) for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and the extremely shitty Game Party and Game Party 2(Which is the same game but with a 2 at the end) for the Wii(though it was a very cheap game that barely sold).
I don't really care, I played MK:A, it was good, but I certainly don't care. It is always kinda sad to see a publisher that has been around since the beginning disappear. But, some of the old must pass away for the new. Although they aren't gone, but the name is. They going to call themselves WBES? Hey, that could be We'reBESt. Or WereBESt. They might want to go with the former :P
Stupid legal system. Why can't they just stay Midway? Wouldn't that be easier? I mean, if all that's getting changed is the NAME...why bother? It's not like the WB logo won't be on the box anyway. Trust me, we'll know that you own them, WB.

Exactly, why can't they keep the name? Midway is Midway, and not WB. Blizzard and Activision kept their names, they became Activision Blizzard. Not Blizztivision and cetainly not some mile long, bland nonsense.
Maybe it's WB's way of showing who's the boss, "yea, feel my boot on your face Midway, I'm WAY older and better than you, now lick it! LICK IT!!!"
Gah! How unsettling. Midway Games, the retro giant, is becoming a WB product? How atrocious. The team that brought us Cruis'n USA, Galaga, Gauntlet, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Spy Hunter, and Rampage, not to mention all of the sequels/remakes that come with those illustrious territories, is becoming a WB offshoot?. Well, I suppose another childhood hero is dying, so much for that....
Rest Well in Retrospect, old friend.
(And if WBIE, or whatever ridiculous lame title they go for, removes the fun from rampant destruction and brutal killings, then where will the young gamers turn then, I ask you?)
