Ryan Reynolds to Play Green Lantern

It's been confirmed that TV and film actor Ryan Reynolds will play Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

Riddle me this, what does Deadpool have in common with the Green Lantern? The answer is that they are both going to be played by Ryan Reynolds in movies released in 2011. The confirmation came on Friday that Reynolds had beaten other contenders Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto to the superhero role.

Reynolds will play Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern, and is the first person to star in movies based on both DC and Marvel titles. The Green Lantern film is being directed by Casino Royale director Martin Campbell, and is scheduled to start filming in January.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed, as some worry that Reynolds, who is mostly known for comedic roles, isn't a great fit for the role of the dignified and serious Hal Jordan. Personally, I prefer Kyle Rayner anyway.

I would have preferred Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan myself, I could see Reynolds as a better Kyle. However I am sure he will be more than adequate.

I find that he could be a good fit but only if he plays it seriously (as in he looks the part a little in my opinion). However I agree with Simriel that Nathan Fillion would be better since he can be dignified and he can also be serious. Plus he's damn cool in Firefly.

Well, hopefully this won't suck as much as the last x-men movie.

I'm just happy the Green Lantern is getting a movie, I hope they don't screw it up though.

By Brightest Day, By Blackest Night, No evil shall escape my sight, Let all who worship evils might fear my power, Green Lanterns Light!

You have to be optimistic! Low expectations for the win.

They're releasing an animated Green Lantern movie and then a live action one? Sounds like they're saturating...

But optimism only gets me disappointed. I mean cmon they couldn't even do a Wolverine movie with out messing it up. (Maybe he'll have a good video game though)

To be honest I would've preferred Bradley Cooper, he looks more the part. Nothing against Ryan I'm really looking forward to him being in the Deadpool movie but that's because he's more of a comedic tongue and cheek actor. But anyway it probably will be good.

Edit: Wow if you follow the link apparently Justin Timberlake was in the running as well *shudders*

Hal Jordan has always been more cocky than Kyle Rayner (who was more insecure).

so yeah, i think Ryan Reynolds will do pretty good.

Seriously - I'm just glad they didn't go to will smith or something. I hated when they tried to make the super heroes more ethnically diverse.

I think Reynolds might be able to do something with this. Or he might not. Either way, his wife is gorgeous and that has to count for something in this world. The bastard.

Awwwww

ive allways wanted ryan renolds to play the flash!!

This means thats never going to happen!

that said Im sure he will do a swell job.

Who the Green Lantern or Wolverine? Wolverine's game sucked...a lot...like a lot a lot.

I think that they might introduce some development in Hal Jordan as a character. You know, he becomes more serious as it continues.

Really though, I'm skeptical about the Green Lantern movie. We'll see when it comes out if it can hold a candle to Iron Man.

So he is playing Deadpool and Green Lantern ? Both movies to be released in 2011 ? Okey... Thats what i call playing the field with dc and marvel !

Love Reynolds- I think he will do great

completely disagree, i had a blast with that game. i just skipped all the story parts after hugh jackman forgot that wolverine wasn't australian in one cutscene.

i'm kinda against the same guy playing two different superheroes. it kinda ruins it for me.

Thats true, but at least it tried to make you feel like wolverine. Even though it was a repetitive God of War clone.

i think he can pull it off

Yeah, I know what you mean. I still have the creeps when I see the king of the Elves in LotR and I constantly hear "Mr. Anderson" whenever he opens his mouth.

It would definatly work seening as Ryan Renolds has a similar personality/looks as the Green Lantern but the Green Lantern has for me always felt like on of those Heroes that would be really dumb on the big screen... (Of course I said the same about Iron man)

After seeing Reynolds in a few serious roles, I think he'll do a good job. I also thought that he was more fit for the goofy roles in all those shitty movies he usually tends to play in, but he's a pretty talented actor, and does a good job when it's a serious part.

Kyle Raynor is not worthy of polishing Hal Jordan's ring. :P

That said, I'd imagine they are being fairly picky and it seems like they had some "names" trying to get the role, so doubtlessly they picked the best of the bunch.

... and yes, Hal Jordan was cocky. One of the big things was that the man had no fear. Allegedly this is "why" Kyle Raynor is supposed to be potentially more powerful since he has fear where Hal did not. Meh.

I guess it's just to me Hal will always be "The" Green Lantern.

I look forward to seeing Ryan Reynolds stretch his acting muscles here. True he wouldn't have been my first pick for Hal, but here Ryan has an opportunity to avoid being typecast. Plus he gets to have fun with Deadpool. And I agree with ethnic diversity to a degree. Will Smith as Hal Jordan, no way. But Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury? Success! It's not the skin, it's the talent and acting niche, but some casting directors would rather ignore that in favor of simple movie experience and not looking racist, while failing at that.

As much as I'd like both movies to rock, I can only predict that the Green Lantern movie will be better than Deadpool.

This is exactly what I was thinking, glad Ryan is getting good roles now. He's gone a long way since Van Wilder.

I think Reynolds could do it...it does somewhat depend on how they set up Hal Jordan to be in the movie...but if they do the usual serious Hal and he takes the roles seriously I think i may be good.....Though hopefully this won't affect the deadpool movie

I've been wanting a green lantern movie since I was little, but I wish they had gone with the black green lantern

Or from the same film, seeing Viggo as ultra hero and the remembering back to my first experience seeing him in a movie as Lucifer ... kind of threw me off.

I don't see what's ruinous about it to be honest. This dude has clearly won either A. The respect of the execs who keep casting him, or B. The fandom of regular folks who want to see him get his acting chops more defined. The Deadpool film, as awesome as it should be (here's to hoping) will be a 180 from a Latern flick. I never read alot of Silver Age DC, but any Green Latern stuff I've seen (Kingdom Come not withstanding) the Laterns have been more reserved, calculating and then you have Deadpool, a mercenary who is known to: Hum or even sing "Men at Work" while breaking into an industrial/military complex in an attempt to murder everyone, wear womens undergarments, refuse to answer business based telephone calls without his mask on (just boxers in his living room, he'll drop the phone to go and grab the mask before handling the call) and so on.
Clearly ... may as well not even be the same person. And if he can pull it off, he'll get kudos from me.

Wow.

Someone actually knows how to cast, it seems. Reynolds is perfect for both the Lantern's and Deadpool's side of humour, and he's a good actor.

Awsome... just awsome.

It seems that he would be a much much better Flash than a Green Lantern, but I'd be willing to give him a shot, he didn't do poorly with Deadpool, granted the movie was just bad.
