First Day of Battlefield 1943 Claims Five Million Lives

The fighting was thick and brutal on the first day of Battlefield 1943, with Axis and Allies alike inflicting a combined total of five million kills.

Now, World War II was - to put it lightly - one hell of a war. When all the fighting had stopped, the combined death toll of soldiers and civilians alike was estimated at anywhere from 40 million to a staggering 72 million dead. That's a truly mindblowing number, when you think about it.

Recently, EA subsidiary and Battlefield developer DICE indicated that in order to unlock the fourth "Coral Sea" map, players would have to earn it through total kills - 43 million kills, to be precise (the lower bound of estimated WW2 casualties). Does that seem like a lot to you? Well, not to worry - as DICE representative Gordon Van Dyke said in a post on the EA Forums, players were already a good portion of the way there: There had been over 5 million kills made on the first day alone!

This, of course, not only makes the release of Battlefield 1943 the most deadly single day in human history, it outstrips the previous record-holder for the bloodiest battle of all time - the Battle of Stalingrad, which claimed a (comparatively) meagerly 2 million lives. And that was over the better part of a year!

It isn't clear whether Van Dyke was referring to just kills made over Xbox Live, or if the total included both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, but he revealed another impressive number: "On Day 1 there were 29.45 years of gameplay completed on Xbox 360." Yeah, that's a lot.

Through clever application of those math-type things, MTV Multiplayer calculated that the Xbox 360 would unlock the Coral Sea in two weeks (next Friday, to be precise) with the PS3 following a week later.

Also, keep in mind that these numbers are high despite server issues that left many would-be soldiers unable to log on and play. So really, the numbers could very well have been even higher.

It makes one wonder how WW2 would have gone if there were a respawn feature in real life.

There would be alotta spawn camping if you could re-spawn in real life.

And that's how you'd win the war. You'd annoy the shit out of people until they all logged out...

As for the article itself, I never really had a big interest in the game, but way to make a hilariously eye-catching headline XD

I'm not sure how this measure up to other kill counts for first days in games. I'd be interested to see vs. other big names shooters, Gears, Halo, CoD and Killzone.

I got this yesterday. It was my first full day back in the U.S. Best present I've gotten related to a vacation in a long time.

We are quite vicarious.

I'm thinking of buying this game, it looks fucking sweet.

Good thing I won't be getting it for a couple of weeks, so the server issues should be fixed until I arrive. :D

I just hope that all of these numbers don't mean that Bad Company is dead, that would make me a sad panda.

You see, it's reasons like this why humans can't have a respawn button in real life.

On topic, five million deaths in one day? That's a pretty shocking number, but considering how popular the game was, you would probably expect that from the first day of it, when the anticipation's so high that people would just go out, buy the game, go home and then just spend the rest of the day playing it, so it's kind of predictable. My guess is that it will slow down though after a few days.

I didn't play it on release date, but I've been playing it a lot since two days ago, an have had no problems. Unless you count the time I tried to play while up loading tons of photos to ImageShack, but that was my fault.

It's really fun, but sometimes I would like a fourth class, and the Coral Sea map. Of course if you buy it later you won't have that problem.

dammit, I've only downloaded the trail game, and that isn't working, saying "can't connect to ea online". Anybody else having that problem?

I need to get this

Very similar thing happened in the launch of Battlefield 2142. Where in the first week it got several billion bullets fired and many more than this lives taken. Also I believe they said the game raked up 1000 years worth of gameplay in that week.

Battlefield just seems to attract many more players in their release and then EA support kicks in and it levels to about 10% of those beginner players and slopes slowly down.

lol ragequit.

Anyway, this game is amazing.

One hell of an arcade game, the first battle I played it was epic, control of Iwo Jima kept going back and forth, back and forth, with brave assults from both teams that succeded, failed, or got halfway.

Friday? It'll happen sooner than that. The 360 version alone has now racked up 30 million kills. Seriously, this is the best arcade game ever. I advise you get it, if only for the sounds. They're incredible.

Oh damn it, I want to join in the fun but my new HDD isn't here yet.
Well at least when it does get here I can help in all the mayhem.

yea me too, anybody know what thats all about?

What would happen, the war would never end...
