Don't Get Your Hopes Up For Beyond Good & Evil 2 Yet

Ubisoft says that they've got people working on some sort of Beyond Good & Evil stuff, but that, despite the appearance of supposed leaked footage months ago, a second game is by no means a sure thing.

Early in May some footage leaked that looked a lot like Beyond Good & Evil 2, leading some folks to get their hopes up for an announcement at E3, while others told everyone to simmer down since the video appeared to be just proof of concept footage or a very nice trailer.

Seems that the latter group was in the right here, because as Ubisoft has revealed, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is far from a sure thing. "Whether or not it comes out remains to be seen anyway, but we didn't want to abandon that IP because it has a cache and authenticity about it," Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc told IndustryGamers. "There's something very pure about that game and it's too bad that we were not able to build it as an IP at the time."

Detoc confirmed knowledge of the leak and that Ubisoft has "been working on some Beyond Good and Evil stuff," but "whether there's going to be another game or not, that's something for the future." So there could be another BG&E, but don't starting holding your breath for it just yet. Ubisoft seems only to be working on the franchise because "the creative talent is interested in it and possibly exploring how to do it from a new angle."

As for that leaked video, Detoc confirmed that it was a legitimate leak and not an marketing ploy. "I'll tell you, I didn't know about the leak and neither did my boss," he said. "The problem when you do stuff like [intentional leaks] is if you get caught it's really bad."

Sad. I really enjoyed that game :( I really hope that they do something with it. Though the whole "looking at it from a different angle" thing kida scares me.

So...What's their evil plan this time?

Aw, I was really excited about this new installment and the whole "new angle" is a bit...eh.

To take over the world, what else?

If I remember correctly there was a video released about a year ago, with people who looked an awful lot like Jade and P.J. They were on the side of the road in the sun. Wasn't that an announcement? Or what was that?

Is it me or does that video look like what Mirrors Edge should have been?

Believe that was a teaser they released at an E3.

Forget which one.

Well then whats the point of "been working on some Beyond Good and Evil stuff", if theyre not sure whats going to happen or if they will even go through to completion with it?

Exactly, so wouldn't that make it confirmed for being in development? Why make a teaser for a game your not going to make anyway?

Starcraft: Ghost.

Beyond Good and Evil would make a good case for what Gabe Newell was talking about the other day with gamers investing in titles to help alleviate some of the risks in high production costs for something that they can't guarantee will sell well (given that the first one sold poorly, though in BG&E's defense, it's their own fault for launching it along-side Prince of Persia during the holiday season).

I would gladly plunk down some cash to see them change it from "It's still not certain" to "Yes, it will be coming out".

You know, I was half expecting someone to say Duke Nukem.

Well, thats kind of a slap to the face..

No company looks for long-term profit nowadays. If they invested some time and money into original ideas more often it wouldn't be stagnating in all this brown browniness.

The only problem is plunking down that cash is by no way a guarantee that they won't screw it up.

All I can say is screw you too Ubisoft. Stop playing with my heart.

I'd say they're onto something good with what was shown in the video. Although, you do still have a point. Given the naturally whiney nature of gamers, they'd throw a hissy fit if they invested into getting the game developed and it didn't play like something crafted by the hands of God Himself. So perhaps the gaming community is rather far from being able to invest into getting games developed.

Hey, hey, hey. They published No More Heroes. I really can't completely hate them. But this is interesting... why would they abandon a game that has a nigh-cult following?

Damn you Ubisoft. You've tricked me again.

Starcraft: Ghost.

That stung, man. Seriously.

I don't think I could ever forgive Blizzard for that one.

Wha-? Why the video then? How can you crush my hopes like this Ubi Soft? If another BG&E game becomes as likely as a serious Rayman game on the Wii, that'd be one less thing worth living for. I didn't think the original was a great game, but it was unique and charming enough to seem well worth persisting with.

Or just to play devil's advocate here they know you already bought the game (cause technically if you invest money and then get the game without having to pay for it again you did buy it) they know they won't be making very much money off of it. So why bother putting all thier best resources into it.

It could be because the first didn't sell well. It and Psychonaughts are 2 games that everyone loves but no one bought when they launched. So to invest in a sequel for either is a risk for them.

And I bear no ill will to Ubisoft based on thier games. They have put out games I liked and others not so much. Just like almost all the other development companies ( though some haven't let me down yet, I know they will just not yet). I don't like this whole

"oh look it is BG&E 2"

"Hurray been waiting for that for years"

"Ha ha PSYCHE. And for our next trick we will just kick you in the nuts."

I'm starting to think so. It just seems like a big middle finger at this point.

one of these days, ima go play that game. ubisoft is a great company and i hear it a terrific game. i hope they still plan on a second. additionally that video looks so badass. kinda drakes fortunes fluidity crossed with mirrors edge platforming. like whos-it said, looks like what mirrors edge shoulda been.

When it costs nothing to develop a game because gamers are collectively footing the development costs, and the game still sells when it's on the shelves, then it's pure profit for them. Slacking-off and consistently making bad games means that they're going to be back to having to fund their own games. I enjoyed Beyond Good and Evil, so I'd gladly want to help fund a second one. If the second one sucked though, then Ubi would likely lose any further funding from me on a BG&E3, or any game they make. I'd just take my dollar to another developer.

There is no game in the world I want more than this one. Goddammit, UbiSoft, y u do dis?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! I've really been hoping that the various video and still leaks meant that they really were working on this... :(

Come on, just make the game already!

Man if only there was someone who predicted thi- oh right, it was me.

Suckers...

It seems like they are having people work on BG&E2, but their not commiting a full development team or budget, so they can still pull the plug if things aren't going well.

I just hope Ubisoft is sinking more time into making Beyond Good & Evil 2 as unique and fun as the first game.

This sudden "hush hush" is either because they want to spend more time fleshing it out, or because they need more time to market a new line of games to tweens and Hannah Montana fans.

Please Ubisoft! For the love of all that is good and holy, DON'T...FUCK...THIS...UP!!!

I do understand what you are saying. I am just paranoid about the idea. It is just to easy to scam us. There is nothing really stopping a company from taking in millions giving us a game that cost 200 bucks and 15 minutes to make. Banking the profits and then disbanding the company and giving a brother or sister or other family member the funds to open a new one and start over again under a new name. And the worst part is we would have no legal recourse. The question would be did they promise you a game? Yes! Did they give you a game? Yes! You lose good day. Ya but the game sucks. Can you prove the game sucks? Well no it is subjective not definitive. I said good day!!

I sort of figured this out when they said nothing about the game during their E3 press conference.

I mean, that would have been a killer announcement, but there was nary a whisper during the event on the matter, and that wasn't a good sign.

The teaser is just that: a teaser, sort of like the hidden endings that games have that hint at sequels. Odds are they were building the trailer to gauge interest in how a second game would be recieved, and right now they're trying to see how people will react to this news.

There's one fish I hope doesn't get away.

So basically the employees love it but the company doesn't see a viable, profitable, future.

I have no words for this, so I'll use a picture.

Oh well, at least maybe they will change the game from what we've seen in the "leaked teaser", because it looked like a crappy clone of a Call of Duty + Assassin's Creed hybrid.
