Modern Warfare 4 Held Hostage

image

A group of gamers with a lot of patience has taken the modernwarfare4.com domain hostage and they're not going to give it up unless Infinity Ward caves in to their demands.

Sometimes people do things that are "bad" in the technical sense of the word, but also admirable for the way they subvert conventional lines of thinking. Say, for instance, hijacking a domain name for a game that doesn't even exist (but almost certainly will) and then holding it for ransom - not for money, but just for some free stuff.

So it is with Modern Warfare 4, the fourth entry in a franchise that's still comprised of exactly one single game. Modern Warfare 2 is still months away, Modern Warfare 3 is at best in the preliminary design phase and Modern Warfare 4 is nothing more than a solid bet. Yet for the devious minds of the Ziip Gaming Community, it's also a potential gold mine. Have a look at modernwarfare4.com and you'll see why.

"Hello Again! After reading recent articles on this site, I have been forced to change our policy on this domain," a message on the site says. "As I have received emails calling me a blackmailer, we have decided to wear balaclavas and make some real demands. If you want to talk - contact welovecod@ziip.co.uk."

That message is an update of the group's original demand for a "goodwill gesture" in exchange for the domain: A copy of Modern Warfare 4 for every member of the Ziip community. And no, that's not a typo, that's a demand for copies of Modern Warfare 4. These guys are obviously playing the long game.

How will this drama play out? The studio could probably use some kind of cybersquatter law to force the release of the domain, but as long as Ziip maintains "reasonable" demands, hopefully nobody will get the urge to turn this into something ugly. And with Modern Warfare 4 looking like a good prospect for, say, 2013, there's plenty of time for hard negotiations.

That's really odd. Surely demanding some kind of reimbursement for the insane price of MW2 would be more useful.

wait they held hostages for a video game and they ask for "modern warfare 4" WTF!!!!

wow this makes us gamers look bad

Hah, hilarious. I would be interested to see what happens next, but I imagine it will involve a loophole or some kind on Activision's part. If they get those games I would be shocked and dumbfounded.

Why didn't I think of that? That's bloody genius. Sure I would have different Demands but it is a great idea.

What if they decide not to call it Modern Warfare 4?

This is really odd and almost really silly. If i was infinity ward id call their bluff just to see what they did to the clown...

Or the developers could just use a different wording...

...so they're demanding they skip to games for them ?
I'd rather demand cheaper games now rather than waiting another 4 years for a free one >.>

I can't wait for Infinity ward to announce the MW series as a trilogy.

Wow, they will just use Modernwarfare4-game.com
Seriously, this whole thing is stupid.

Ha ha ha ha

That's hilarious

That is...really bizarre. I don't see anything admirable about their actions, though; it seems like they're taking advantage of a technicality in order to make a quick buck off of a company.

Thats thinking ahead.

Win.

Smart guys, however I would not want to do battle with Activision. Best to ask for something small and do-able (like copies of a game not made yet) if everyone is to leave this intact.

I don't think Infinity Ward will have a problem using .net or .org or even .iward. This won't work and I don't even think Infinity Ward will make a fourth one, lest it become stagnant.

Well, considering that Internet squatting actually isn't legal, it probably won't be hard for Activision to get them shut down.

Or they'll go the even more amusing route and just use a different URL for their site.

since they are not asking for money that is f-ing awesom. especially for a game that is so far in the future. I hope they get it. Hell, I feel like i should join their community lol

www.MW4.com

Problem solved. Seriously, they didn't think that through, did they?

I say we make a website with the name of borderlands 2, or crysis 3, or red faction gurilla 2, or you get the point. One copy to every Escapist, or Escapie, We really need to justify a name for us.

Come on..let them dream o.o..

It'll be hilarious when the CSA busts in those guys' doors with S.W.A.T. teams, shoots them in their legs, and put burlap sacks over their heads. They'll wake up in a secret facility and be forced to give the site up. Maybe.

Hilarious, but can't Infinity Ward get around this by just naming their site something like modernwarfare4game.com, or is my internet-knowledge lacking?

BTW, are assassinscreed3.com, masseffect3.com and fallout4.com already taken?

Everybody's so serious about this.

I doubt this guy would actually try to force Activision to give out a bunch of free games, he probably just wants to be able to say that he held out against Activision and got something. It would probably cost more for Activision to have it's lawyers yell at people to get this domain name back than to simply offer to ship this guy a free T-shirt.

Personally, I hope Activison complies with these demands immediately and sends the Ziip community disks labled MW4, and when you play it, it rickrolls you. At the end, there would be a message saying that this is as far in the development process as they have gone, and to please watch their site for updates.

That attempt at getting an imaginary sequel, for free, no less, is the new definition of retarded. Seriously, do you think Infinity Ward is going to milk Call of Duty for all it's worth? I mean, sure they're gonna continue the franchise, but not go all the way up the bat shit bonkers ladder and make four Modern Warfare games.

Yeah it does. I really don't see what the big deal is anyway, isn't MW2 going to be $60?

I think this is genius. But I just they were a little more realistic and just ask for T-shirts or invite them to future MM beta testings or something.

If I was Infinity Ward I would reward this kind of fan love, but I can't just give away copies of my hard work for free.

who the hell would hold mw4 hostage even though the secound one isnt out...some people need to get lifes if they are going to such odds. see this is why all game companys are evil they make awsome stuff and then all the fans cant wait for more...

Idiots. Infinity ward will give away a few games in a flash. They should have demanded a few grand.

Modern Warfare FOUR anyone?

That or they'll rename the game by the 4th installment. Or they could add a modern warfare 4 section to an already existing website.
Or something else.

I don't think they'll bite.

hey, I'd join.

Just use ModernwarfareIV.com pff there are lot of other ways to do it

Well that's stupid and self-centered.
I thought they'd do something that would benefit the whole, victimized COD community, like demand Activision stop dicking around with the pricing.

Besides, they can just make it codmw4.com
Shorter anyways.

Cybersquatting laws seem like such bull to me. If Activision really wants it, they'll just get it, because that's how the Anticybersquatting Act works. It's pretty unfair, because it basically says: "yes, that domain is yours, but this guy over here has a better reason to use it, so it's not yours anymore. Ahahahah, go away, sad little man."

That said, I appreciate what they're doing, and that they're doing it in a humorous way, and likely for a lark, not for any serious reason cybersquatting-esque reason.
