British Newspaper Predicts £260 PS3 Slim

image

British newspaper the Daily Telegraph predicts that the rumoured 'slim' version of the PlayStation 3 will retail for £260.

This prediction follows news from Taiwan that Sony have bought enough PS3 parts to build a million consoles in the third quarter of 2009, far above the amount purchased over the last three months. According to the Telegraph, the console is expected to retail for £260 (approximately $440) for the 40Gb version, with an 80Gb version also likely.

This fresh speculation follows an appearance of a listing for a 'PlayStation 3 - Konsole Slim" on the German language version of Amazon. The veracity of the listing was questionable, as it featured no details regarding price or release date, and featured a fan created image. The listing was quickly removed, but a cached version of it can still be viewed.

If the Telegraph's predictions are correct, it begs the question of whether a £40 ($67) reduction in price is sufficient to entice consumers into buying the device, especially considering that recent reports suggest that the cost of manufacturing a regular PS3 is almost half the predicted price.

I doubt it will be that cheap to begin with, but the price will probably drop sharpish after a month or two.

I disagree, I reckon Sony will announce the price drop along side the new PS3 slim... still, I wish it were a sharper price drop.

I can pick up an 80 gig PS3 new from GAME for £290.

Unless sony aren't going to be charging less than £30 for an extra 40GB(with their price gouging at times, I doubt it) it'd be cheaper to buy a fat PS3, no?

I think that regardless of a price drop of this size, they may have largely missed the boat on alot of potential buyers, and won't be benefiting from something like this too much
My question is, will this price drop hit Australia? Nothing else ever does...

At that price, I would like to know what they took out.

Wait, 40GB? Nah, that ain't cuttin' the mustard, you can get an 80GB for not much more. And IMHO the PS3 phat edition looks better than the rumoured slim as well.

Hurm. I'm always glad to see a system I don't already own getting a price drop, but I still can't see myself paying $440 for a PS3, even if that does let me play LittleBigPlanet and other PS3 exclusives. I think I'll pass on this, for now, and wait until the price drops even further.

I doubt it will be that low

Since when did anyone use The Telegraph for information of this kind? I'm quite surprised that such speculation even made it to it's pages. The console buying generation is generally not considered to be a part of it's demographic.

The question is will the updates be virus free.

If its under 300 US Sony will make a big come back if not they will ride the wave of mediocrity until the next generation.

They need to dip the price way lower to get those who haven't bothered yet to part with their dollars

If they've dropped the price to produce alot... and this new PS3slim is even cheaper...

Why so expensive?

I don't like one word posts (and the mods like them even less these days), but to put it concisely:

Profit.

Plain and simple. Businesses exist to make money and if Sony think they can gouge an extra £30 more than necessary with their new slim PS3, what reason do they have to not do so? Assuming the 80 gig version is still cheaper than the 80 gig fat PS3 (which would logical sense you would have thought) then they'll still sell new units to those who haven't yet bought a PS3 like myself.

Fair enough, I can understand their need to make scratch especially after the beating they took. I still get to make fun of their price point though.
