Blizzard has announced the third expansion to World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
It's official, folks. Chris Metzen took the stage at BlizzCon '09 to unveil Cataclysm, the new expansion to World of Warcraft, calling it "earthshattering." Looks like all the rumors leaked beforehand are true: A disaster from the Maelstrom erupts, changing the face of Azeroth as we know it: We see the Barrens divided by lava, Mulgore on fire, huge waterfalls and whirlpools in Darkshore. Desolace is all verdant and lush now. Entire zones have been reshaped.
New races, as rumored: Goblins of the South Seas are forced from their homes and find allies in the Horde. The Worgen (werewolf)-cursed humans of Gilneas are beset by the Forsaken and are approached by the Night Elves - remember the whole Scythe of Elune chain? Yeah - to join the Alliance.
More new stuff: The level cap is being raised to 85, you'll be able to use flying mounts in Azeroth. There are also new Race/Class combos: We only see Troll Druids, Tauren Paladins, Gnome Priests, and Human Hunters, but there are more beyond that.
With only 5 new levels, there's going to be a new way to advance your character - it's called Path of the Titans, but we don't know anything beyond that. New secondary skill - Archaeology. They're retooling some of the old fan favorite dungeons (Heroic Deadmines, Heroic Shadowfang Keep are mentioned) and of course adding a bunch of new instances and hundreds of new quests.
Supremely evil dragon Deathwing - remember him from Warcraft II? - is the Big Bad of this expansion, like Arthas is to WotLK. Everything looks pretty damn cool.
We'll find out more at the upcoming WoW Preview Panel.
i hardly believe it, that's a lot of work redoing old content, that i thought they weren't going to redo, thought they wanted ot add on, but either way, i'm hooked on wow crack, so i'll be playing along.
oliveira8: Well guess I'm not going back to WoW anytime soon.
Frankly, Cataclysm looks pretty freakin' sweet, to be honest.
The redoing of the old world and using more phasing for the old parts(I assume it's phase so they don't mess the newbie areas), but the rest just seems...Errrrr...
The only thing cool apart from the old world is Deathwing.
When a friend told me about this I was shocked as hell, this was before the actual announcement, it went a little something like this.
"The next WoW expansion is looking... interesting..." "Oh? How so?" "Well, they're creating more race/class combinations..." "Oh yeah? Like what?" "Well, Human hunters, Orc Paladins, Dwarf Shamans... Gnome Priests..." "WHAT?!" "WHAAAAAT?!!!" "FUCK... WHAT?!" "WHAAAAAT!!! FUCK!!" "Oh, they're also giving Horde the Goblins and Alliance get... Worgens..."
*silence*
"WHAT?!"
(my reaction was 100% genuine and I've honestly cut it down by quite a sizable amount, to save you the bother of reading it.)
But yeah, that was just him reading out a post of speculation at the time, So hopefully Gnome Priests aren't in it.
Don't get me wrong, it'd be awesome if they could get Priests, I'm a fan of Gnomes and have been for as long as i've been playing.
But I'll be damned If I'm going to delete my undead priest (something I had to wait for Blizzard to take the faction barrier down on my server for) just so I can finally have my other dream of having a Gnome Priest...
On a more positive note, I'm actually really interested in the idea of HEROIC Deadmines...
[Edit]: Awh hell, I must have missed it on the first read through... Gnome Priests...
I can understand why people want to leave the game, but why on earth would seeing this announcement of some pretty cool stuff make you want to leave MORE? It's all getting added, and it's probably taking tons of work. I don't see why that's a bad thing.
I guess it looks like wow has been dragging me back in for the past month and I think they delievered the final blow, I will probably get wow when the expansion is released.

New race/class combination is pretty awesome, and most of them make sense (Trolls shift into animals in Zul'Aman, no reason to not have Human Hunters, etc). I love that they're trying something different for this. I'm not sure if it'll be new phasing, though - they might be completely redoing the 1-60 game. Completely.

Hmm doubt they will be remaking 1-60. Phasing seems much better and less work. When you reach a certain level or something.

Yeah, I may just re-subscribe for it. I missed out on TBC outbreak of Blood Elfs/Draenei, so I kind of want to experience the utter madness of a new race. And the whole reshapped Azeroth looks sounds amazing.

That's exactly what I'm hoping they will do. I really would like to be able to interact with my level 1-60 friends, if we couldn't do that the whole MMO feel would be pretty much destroyed. I was actually anxiously waiting for the 1-60 game to be redone, it deserves to be on par with the Northrend questing content.
PS: Kinda sad to see Mulgore on fire, it was one of my fav starting areas. So tranquil and peacefull.
if I still played wow Id be annoyed about the horde constantly getting shafted with races, white elfs and goblins, that fits. but for now blizz can fornicate themselfs with an iron rod since I get the feeling Ill end up having to change my fav forum name

It does. But so did Wrath of the Lich King. And like many old hardcore Wow fans I left because it just didnt feel like WOW anymore. I only really got to level 76 before I got bored (I played a few times at level 80 after I quite at my cousins and it just didnt feel the same as hitting 60 and 70.)
Frankly it looks fantastic but its just not the same anymore.

Well you can't expect a game to stay the same all the time? What did you miss then?
Well played, Blizzard. I've been an anti-warcraft type for a while, insisting that they've gone too long with the same crap and add-ons not being enough. But this sounds more like an expansion that plays like a sequel. I'm still not gonna play, but it looks admirably good.

I know exactly how you feel. Within the first year of WoW's initial launch, I was begging for Troll Druids.
And since the first expansion, I've been a fan of the paladin class, but being a horde lover all I got was blood elf. A tauren paladin would have been frikken sweet.
Now I need to re-roll one when the expansion comes <.<
