Wandrecanada:
Why is everyone applauding a man suspected of the double homicide of two early 30s women by strangulation.

Because he wasn't found guilty.

Five years awaiting conviction? I guess the French constitution doesn't have the right to a speedy trial like ours does. I guess all the lawyers were on vacation. They must have figured he wasn't going anywhere. Ha!

(My sincerest apologies to the French. Hey, at least I didn't make any tired 'surrender' jokes, eh?)

If there'd been more french guys like this one around 60 or so years ago, maybe the country would be the butt of every war joke the way it is now.

Hell just one of them would be able to get deep into Nazi territory and take out the Nazi leaders before the war got out of hand.

Well you may not find him if he remembers to put on his special camo clothes and make-up.

Yeah, but he'll have keep changing camo clothes and makeup every couple of minutes. He'll probably wear himself out if he doesn't have an inventory menu.

Even if he's discovered, he still has his infinite ammo bandana as a last resort. Actually I take that back. His army of hidden monkeys would be his last resort.

THAT. WAS...AWESOME! Well done French Dude! Not the murdering part but the escape part obviously. Seeing that picture brings back memories though. Surprisingly, the cardboard box worked about %50 of the time in MGO.

He'll be impossible to apprehend if he puts on the fly camo though

Fascinating. This means that the next time I play Metal Gear with Snake in a box and someone tells me such a disguise would never work, I'd pull up this article and tell them to shut the hell up.

This just in: Solid Snake is French.

A lot of people are praising this guy, and I agree that escaping disguised as a box is pretty impressive but... he's suspected of two murders. Someone said 'let him go'... I mean, isn't that completely insane and a mockery of the French justice system and perhaps all justice systems? Still pretty impressive, but luck to those trying to catch him.

Treiber? TREIBER?! TREEEEEIIIIIBBEEEEERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: I realize I wasn't the first to do this...thats what I get for not reading the other posts...

i'd be shocked, but its the french so ha

Littaly:
Treiber? Treiber?! Treibeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!

Dammit, you beat me to it...

better solid snake stile than hanibal lecter

CantFaketheFunk:

The prison break has caused embarrassment in French officials, who have been unable to explain how a simple cardboard box could fool guards who have been fitted with the latest nanomachines and given genetic therapy that renders them superhuman (with the drawback that they can only see twenty or so feet in front of them).

Don't forget the holographic exclamation mark generators build into their foreheads.

What was that noise?

!

lol sounds like a fun escape ;)

Well not really, he was probably born in America, his father, Solid Snake, aka Big Boss, was also American, his surrogate mother, Eve, was Russian or something like that, and the women whose eggs were used as a recipient for BBs sperm was Japanese; she was also the assistant to the doctor who oversaw the cloning project, that's how he got her to do it, he said he's fire her if she didn't.

The only French thing about Solids birth was the name of the project: les enfants de la terre, or something like that, but the only reason it has a French name is because Hideo Kojima has no sense of continuity.

!
O_o

well it seems it works OK guys let's bust out some people :P

What? This is an internet game forum! We know no solemnity here!

Just kidding, I agree. Amazing escape or not, he's still a suspected murderer. I suspect that the French are going to scoop him up as quickly as possible, given that this is probably their most embarrassing defeat in a long time.

What about all those fellas on death row? 10 years waiting to be found guilty, wouldn't really call that a speedy trial.

but on topic pure win by the escapee :)

...What? They've already been found guilty if they're on death row. They're waiting for death sentence to be executed, which is not guaranteed to be speedy.

Epic Win. Best prison breakout ever!

I could have sworn this has happened before....maybe I'm just crazy.

Most of the time the death sentence takes so long because of the appeals process. Lawyers file lots of appeals after someone is given the death penalty. Plus, it might let other evidence flesh out that could overturn the verdict.

Ahhhhh my apologies, my understanding of the U.S legal system is shaky at best :)
but still keeping someone alive that long when they know they're destined for death could be considered slightly cruel......though some of sadist bastards deserve it.

It's usually their fault, as said above. Appeals process ties it up in court system for a long time. Can't really blame them for not wanting to die though.

I just hope Hideo Kojima is aware of this.

I know that. I was referring to this Jean-Pierre Treiber guy.

And the project's name was "Les Enfants Terribles" and it's named after a book.

If he turns out to be innocent, let's recruit him as our real life Snake. Actually, probably not. Too good a spy. Power balance tips way into the favor of whoever gets him.

It actually has to do with a difference between the French and the American judicial system.

There are two main types of Judicial systems, the Adversarial System, and the Inquisitorial system. American uses the Adversarial system, and France uses the Inquisitorial system.

To put it in the simplest way possible, under the Inquisitorial system, the case is investigated, and evidence examined, and all that good stuff before the trial begins. The case doesn't go to trial until the judge is convinced that the accused is guilty. Basically, trials in France are roughly equivalent to the "Closing Arguments" and the "Sentencing" phase of the system that you know. If a case goes to trial in France, a conviction is almost guaranteed. Trials in France are EXTREMELY swift, and usually don't last more than an hour or so.

So to put it in perspective, it's closer to under the American system, a court case when has been dragged out for many years, as an example, the OJ Simpson trial, which lasted over 3 years.

How exactly do you "construct" a cardboard box in a workshop? lol

If this is true, we are fucked.

LMFAO when i heard this story. seriously they didn't check the boxes for content? Or the Fact that it was an unscheduled package thats an epic fail

JaredXE:
I want to make a joke about the French....but, I could see this happening in America too.

And seriously, that man deserves some kind of award or something. Something to immortalize him for years.

How about a huge bronze of the box he escaped in, right in the middle of Paris?

CantFaketheFunk:

Whether guilty or innocent, The Escapist would like to suggest that if/when the French authorities recapture Trebier, they consider an alternative beyond incarceration and train him as a supersoldier to destroy nuclear-equipped walking battle tanks and to pontificate on the nature of war.

If they do that, I will never mock them again.

Hell, I'd FUND the program!
