Prisoner Uses Metal Gear's Cardboard Box to Escape

if theres one thing i must ask it is this.....Why does everybody hate the french?

If this guy wasn't a double murder suspect this would be the feel good story of the year. It's still amazingly cool on his part to actually use something so ludicrous as the cardboard box disguise to get past prison guards. I wonder if they saw the box move, would a question mark appear over their head?

Jealous of those unshaven underarms. I kid, of course.

I'm not sure how many people actually hate the French but I'd think it'd only be the Algerians or the Moroccans in the audience who actually have a real gripe with them. I love all of my French friends and if they weren't all gay I'd let them love me back. Like most of my jokes about a country's occupants or an ethnicity it's just a way to make them less of a big deal between me and my friends. It doesn't matter if it's only teasing and it humanises them as opposed to dehumanising them. Because then they'd cry.

P.S. I mean no offence to anyone's French. I'm a kiwi so if you want to make a crack about sheep shagging or there being only 2 people in the country then send them to me in a PM.

Pure genius. This guy should be awarded a medal for 'Most Awesome Escape'. It'd put Houdini to shame.

N.B. I'm sure he'd appreciate a cookie too.

Prisoner Uses Metal Gear's Cardboard Box to Escape

image

Think Solid Snake's "tactical cardboard box action" is just a gameplay mechanic to sneak past guards? You'd be wrong: A prisoner used a cardboard box to escape from custody in a French prison.

45-year-old Jean-Pierre Treiber, a double murder suspect and one of France's highest-profile prisoners, must have been a fan of Metal Gear Solid, judging by his escape yesterday from a high-security prison. Treiber managed to elude detection by packing himself into a cardboard box he had constructed in the Auxerre, Burgundy prison workshop, reports the Telegraph.

The box was then loaded onto a truck for delivery to France's Yonne region and driven away, much like how Solid Snake could ship himself between different regions of the Outer Heaven fortress in the first Metal Gear game. During the 100-mile journey, Treiber cut himself free and jumped from the truck, an act that was only discovered once the driver had reached his destination and found a hole cut in the tarp used to cover the boxes.

The prison break has caused embarrassment in French officials, who have been unable to explain how a simple cardboard box could fool guards who have been fitted with the latest nanomachines and given genetic therapy that renders them superhuman (with the drawback that they can only see twenty or so feet in front of them). The authorities have begun a manhunt to catch the escaped Treiber, out of fear that his unrestrained presence may cause a public panic due to unnecessarily long and heavy-handed cutscenes.

One might argue that this escape attempt would only hurt Treiber's case, as he has been in prison since 2004 awaiting trial, charged with strangling French actor Roland Giraud's daughter Geraldine, and her friend Katia Lherbier. Though Giraud claims that this escape is proof of Treiber's guilt in the murder of his daughter, supporters of Treiber's innocence point to mysterious DNA traces on the adhesive used to gag Lherbier and Giraud's mouths that does not match his own. Treiber's lawyer says that it proves nothing:

"One can either say he's guilty and that this is proof of his guilt... or one can say he's desperate, that he no longer has faith in the justice system because he's pleaded his innocence for so long and hasn't been heard."

Whether guilty or innocent, The Escapist would like to suggest that if/when the French authorities recapture Trebier, they consider an alternative beyond incarceration and train him as a supersoldier to destroy nuclear-equipped walking battle tanks and to pontificate on the nature of war.

I completely agree. This has to be the most awesome escape I have ever heard of.This man deserves a whole box of cookies. Then again if he gets recaptured they probably won't let him near the box.

This made my day xD.

If someone escaped from MY prison like that, I'd want to shake their hand! I wouldn't even be mad, that's amazing!

Yes, let's all forget the fact that he's a convicted murderer in favor of spouting Metal Gear Solid references.

I find it astonishing that simple gameplay mechanics can in fact function in the real world as well.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA!! HAAAAAAA HA HA HA!! Whoo hoo hoo hoo! Ha HA!...

Ooh...oh man, I think I hurt myself laughing. What's next, he's going to allude capture by switching the controller to the 2nd-player port?

Who says playing games are not beneficial? XD

Awesome.

I think he deserves his freedom now.

Yeah I can't help but agree. If someone is fooled with something like this then whoever used it obviously wants to not be where they are anymore and deserves leave. Just replace I'm sure you can find someone else.

I can see it now. They cuff him and he is like "Oh no...but wait" and the cuffs just phase away into nothing.

This guy is a hero.
Let him go.

ssgt splatter:
Oh dear. Well, I guess when you're in prison; you have a lot of time to figure out how this could actually work.

"See, videogames teach people not only how to murder and steal, but they also teach convicted murderers how to escape from a high-security prison! All videogames are evil and must be destroyed!" *What Jack Thompson will be thinking once he reads this.*

*Sigh* Another thing for the media to blow out of proportion and use to try to ban video games.

Wandrecanada:
Why is everyone applauding a man suspected of the double homicide of two early 30s women by strangulation? It's terrible that he's escaped although it's even more terrible that he's been awaiting trial since 2004. There's even an odd mystery to the case in that there is DNA that they have not identified present on the tape used to gag the women.

If he was innocent and his cryptic response to being arrested of "He bumped her off," refers to the actual killer, this stupid escape will make him guilty of a crime anyways.

It's actually pretty bad news all around especially the high security prison, which was foiled by a man in a box (albeit a man with amazing woodcraft skills).

I believe everyone is applauding this man, who suspected of the double homicide of two early 30s women by strangulation, because the way he escaped. I myself think the way he escaped is funny, embarrassing to the prison guards, but funny.
Although it does still mean that a man who is suspected of double homicide is on the loose and a cool escape plan DOES NOT EXCUSE HIM FROM HIS CRIME (assuming he did it in the first place) OR MAKE HIM A HERO.

megapenguinx:
I could have sworn this has happened before....maybe I'm just crazy.

Yeah shadow moses 2005 ,some state of the art supersoldiers got outfought and outthought by a reteired special forces vet using nothing more than a carboard box and some ketchup XD

Littaly:
Treiber? Treiber?! Treibeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!

Lolage I wasn't the only one looking at his name and see if we could swap Snake for his :P

I say put him in an MGS game entirely his own!

It is legendary beyond belief that he managed that though

Littaly:
Treiber? Treiber?! Treibeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!

lol.
Gotta luv u for that man.

As for the french authorites, just catch him when he stops for one of those long cutscenes.

GamerLuck:
For a man who has been waiting so long for trial, i think he finally lost faith in the justice system... and got the f*** out of dodge in a very awesome way.

Though I shudder to think what will happen if Fox News gets ahold of this story...

FOX!!!

he just one-upped the guy who robbed convenience stores with a klingon weapon

I am in general agreement with the statement that this man deserves a great many accolades for an impressive escape.

That said, doing so does not bode well for him.

Thereafter... Why don't prisons hire people like this guy to TRY and escape? If you had an entire prison brimming with people trying to figure out how to break the system, I think you would likely find the vast majority of the loopholes before filling it with a criminal population.

"Wait a sec... let me just go plug in my game shark real quick..."

must......do.......this......at.......school........ if security guards cant find them a guess a teacher cant....

oh man. i'm so going to get arrested and try this.

I suspect it's a coverup for a more powerful accomplice...but this escape was simply awesome.
If it took that long to decide whether he had a buddy in the crime something is pointing to him not getting a fair trial anyway as they dismiss the other evidence.

He MIGHT be a killer but he is not stupid.

Yay a murderer escaped from prison.

Populus89:
This man has earned his freedom.

I say let him go.

(Or make a super-soldier out of him)

That's a little over-generous - he is a murderer after all. I say shoot him in the knees (because nobody likes a runner), give him a round of applause (because I concede that he deserves that) then lock him in solitary for the rest of his sentence. Everyone has their bit of fun, the status quo remains.

I'm surprised the French prison service didn't find him in the box though... they scrutinised every British farm animal for years, you wouldn't think they'd ignore 12st boxes marked "The Big Easy"...

Wow, the justice system doesnt cease to show me how incredibly lame they are, 1 for letting someone escape in a box and 2 not giving him a proper trial

man the French are stupid! they cant even monitor a single person or the Treiber guy played allot of MGS

or should star in a MGS movie

But it's still hilarious, considering I'm watching doomsday episode 1 but obviously, this just shows how shit the guarding of prisons are lol

LOL Epic Fail.

*TreiberLives*

I will totally help you, dude.

Jerich0:
oh man. i'm so going to get arrested and try this.

And now every time someone criticizess the Metal Gear series for being implausibly gimmicky, I can point out this article, shrug, and say "Hey, if it works in France..."

To all of the people saying this is awesome and commending the man on a job well done:
Let me remind you all that this man is not Solid Snake. He is not some hardened soldier hero trying to save the world from a bipedal tank, he is an escaped convict accused of murder. Whether he's innocent or not may remain to be seen, but in breaking out of jail, he has committed a(nother?) federal offense.
Not to say that it isn't totally fuckin' sweet. I just want to remind everybody that this guy may not be as heroic as the article jokingly suggests.

Fox News: SEE! video games are evil and should be banned and are ruining America and,and,and...

They'll probably to a documentary or something ugh...
