On September 19, Telltale is making the premiere episode of Tales of Monkey Island® a FREE download on their website (http://www.playlikeapirate.com/) all day.

In addition, today through September 21, LucasArts is offering a virtual treasure trove of deals on several versions of The Secret of Monkey Island®: Special Edition titles, including:

50% off the iPhone and iPod touch version of LucasArts' new The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition via Apple's App Store

50% off The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on Steam®, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC and Direct2Drive, IGN Entertainment's digital download store

Best ye' jump on these offers smartly before they expire!

LucasArts will also soon release a free "lite" version of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPod touch as well as a sound board application for iPhone and iPod touch that features 16 witty and ridiculing sound-bites from The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.

Taking place each year on September 19, Talk Like a Pirate Day was officially started in 1995 by two Oregon-based pirate lovers and has since become a pop culture phenomenon celebrated by would-be scallywags all over the globe. The event has evolved beyond simple pirate speech with people inserting piratey activities into their everyday life by eating, drinking, dressing, blogging, laughing, Tweeting, and gaming ... like a pirate!

The Monkey Island pirate game phenomenon all started in 1990 with LucasArts' The Secret of Monkey Island, a graphical adventure PC title featuring an aspiring pirate named Guybrush Threepwood. The game was an instant critical success and has since spawned three additional titles, making it one of the most enduring videogame franchises of all time.

The new wave of Monkey Island excellence kicked off this summer with two new projects. Telltale premiered the Tales of Monkey Island game series on PC and WiiWare™, in July, delivering a completely new epic storyline and swashbuckling flair that is unfolding across five monthly episodes, which are available for download on Tellale's website, http://www.telltalegames.com. Wii™ users can also download episodes individually from the Wii Shop Channel.

The Monkey Island celebration continued when LucasArts published The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, a completely re-imagined version of the first game in the series that adds updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC via Steam and Direct2Drive, and iPhone and iPod touch through Apple's App Store.

What if it's pirated on Talk Like A Pirate Day?

WHAT THEN?

Arr! Me thinks I'll be takin' dem up on der promise o' plunder.

Where's my Curse of Monkey Island LucasArts?

Still a cool offer, I do love free stuff.

...So it's my birthday, Talk Like a Pirate day, AND I get Monkey Island for free? Life is good.

It's already that time again, huh? Better fish out my pirate hat and Jolly Roger and wish my friend a happy birthday.

Also as much as I want to take advantage of this offer, I doubt I will be able to 'cause this isn't my computer. Shame...

It's also Rosh Hashanah! I'll wear a skull-and-crossbones pin to the synagogue.

What be this?! We get ta experience the adventures of the great pirate Guybrush Threepwood for free?! Rejoice, me hearties, for on September 19, we be gettin' a feast of piracy!

Too bad I despised these games. Interesting concept, though, I like it.

Alas, can't afford one. My next two, maybe three paychecks are already spent.

Heh, that's cute. And also convenient, considering that I have not yet procured these piraty things...

Never played Monkey Island before. (Don't kill me) Can't wait to give it a try on Saturday!

I'm surprised at how much Talk Like a Pirate Day has been taking off. I remember reading about many, many years ago in a Dave Barry column.

I guess we have the internet's pirate saturation to thank for it's survival.

The game will be for free? legally?

I'll try to get everyone in my class to get this game. Hopefully, this will get them into gaming and spread my nerdy joy.

Would it be accurate to say that this applies exclusively to the PC versions?
Its a shame cuz I wanted to play the new ones on my Wii, but I'm not about to pass up an opportunity like this.

that's pretty cool tho it's only one episode of it, not sure if i'll dl it

I just read the small print too and was pretty disappointing. However I think it's the full games Tales of Monkey Island, but that game is one of 5 new Monkey Island games:

Tales of Monkey Island Chapter One: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is the first episode of its five-game revival of the classic adventure franchise.

I'm not really sure though.

WHAT THEN?

Pirating will be gone forever.

It like negative times negative is positive.

I hope it won't be a temoral download (or atleast for a few weeks)

Wait. Is this one of those timed free downloads or is it the real thing?

If so Lucasarts are really rising on my "awesome game developers/publishers" list.

Yar, Ye' little Meshiganae!

Well, this would be a good time to decide on whether or not I want to purchase the full 5-episode game, then, if I can try the first episode for free. Good show.

I'm not sure, the wording isn't exactly clear on that. It says "Free one day only" so it could mean anything.

Are all 5 episodes already available for purchase?

... how glad am I now that decided not to buy this game yesterday? VERY, that is how. This is very awesome of Telltale. I can't wait. :D

You can pre-purchase the whole set at once online, download them as they're released, and get a physical copy of the game once all episodes are out.

Hoist the sails, mateys! Pluderin' time!

'Tis time fer a party! So hoist the colours up high, trim the sails an' set course fer tha Telltalegames.com

Crac' open tha grog and whiskay! Tis here be a partay, mateys! Sing! Be merry! Woo the wenches! And ere mornin' comes an' sun rises, be no man left standing!

So yeah, giddy as a schoolgirl. Even though I'm a guy.

Curse ye land lubbers, I'm settin' a sail tonight so I won't be here to claim my share of the booty! Somebody better save me a piece of eight or I'll get REALLY mad! Arrrgh.

Hell yes! Kinda glad I didn't get around to buying these ones yet.

From what I understand, it's the entire first episode, free. Of course, they're probably gambling on people liking it so much they'll buy the next ones, too. So while consumers get a free game, Telltale gets some pretty nifty advertising, especially word-of-mouth. It's pretty darn clever of them.

Avast! Bumping this tale for all te' see, booty of such wealth shouldnt be missed by even the scurviest of knaves or lubbers.

GLORY BE FER THIS GLORIOUS BOOTY!

What be this? Me skip one day of visiting the Escapist and almost miss out on free plunder!?

Uhm, dude. Check the dates. All the other posts are 2009. This was last year.

Looks like there is still a deal involved for today, though. You can get all 5 episodes of Tales of Monkey Island for $4.95.
