Netflix Confirms Interest in PlayStation 3, Wii

image

In spite of his company's relationship with Microsoft, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he wants to expand the online movie rental service to include the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

Netflix is currently an Xbox 360 exclusive, although rumors have bounced around since early this year that the company was looking to broaden its horizons. In March, Netflix conducted a survey strongly suggesting that a move to the Wii was in the works, while in April it posted an ad for an "Engineering Lead" with experience on all current consoles. Now, in an interview with Reuters, the chief executive of Netflix confirmed that the company wants to spread its wings and fly.

"Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs," Hastings said. "So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven't characterized it more than that."

The company is also eyeballing mobile options, including Apple's iPhone, but Reed said that while it's "likely" to happen in the future, there's nothing planned for the near future. "We are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles," he said. "We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone."

So have patience, PS3 owners. (You too, Wii guys.) Your time is coming!

it would be awesome if netflix came to the ps3

Then I guess you better gird your loins for some awesomeness.

I wasn't even aware that the Wii could play movies.=\

I wonder how they would work it in on the PS3. Would Sony remove the rental service they already have in place and replace it with Netflix?

Yep, but it's mainly through homebrew. Hell it can do everything through homebrew from radio, emulation, DVDs and all kinds of other crap you'll never need.

I think this is cool, but if they can't do that group theatre function that the 360 can do, I might end up giving it a pass.

Meanwhile, Playstation 3 owners deny interest in Netflix.

sadly i doubt this will be available in Canada

I live in Holland so it means f*ck all to me.

That's really cool. This would just be another reason for me to get a PS3.

Did they remove Microsofts buy a movie service?
Nope.

Sony's Store offers basically sony movies & companies alligned with sony, aka the blu-ray team. Adding netflix to Ps3 wouldn't disrupt that.

Take it from someone who actually has netflix watchnow! The selection of 'watch now' is god awful! The real stuffs in what they send home!

The real problem I forsee is, orginally Netflix used a custom flash/webinstaller for netflix, meaning with an 'install' on the ps3, and updated flash they could run netflix.

Now netflix is using silverlight (I'm assuming the 360 can use silverlight assetts)
Which basically means they have to completely re-work there streaming 'code' for the Ps3...

No thanks. I'd rather have physical BR discs.

Question: Is it just me or is alot of Xbox specials moving to multi-platform? For instance, Netflix and Fallout3 DLC are going that way.... my consiracy theory will be complete if GTA DLC did the same.

Those were all timed exclusive, this was bound to happen. As for GTA, who knows, when Microsoft gets an exclusive they want they will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.
