Super Street Fighter IV Brings Eight New Challengers

The rumors from yesterday are true - Capcom has announced Super Street Fighter IV for 2010, a stand-alone update of SF4 that brings eight new fighters to the table.

Gamespot has the full skinny: SSF4 will bump up the existing character roster of 25 by adding eight new fighters, three of whom have been revealed thus far. Juri is a new female character, a nimble Tae Kwon Do practitioner from Korea, whereas Super Street Fighter II combatants T. Hawk and Dee Jay will be making a return.

This, of course, leaves five unannounced characters, and while it's possible that some of them could be original fighters like Juri, it's probable that some of them will be fan favorites from other games as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dudley and Ibuki from Street Fighter III, personally.

SSF4's pre-existing fighters will get an overhaul, too. New Ultra attacks will be added, and balance issues will be addressed based on feedback from the community and testers - so hopefully Sagat won't be quite so overpowered anymore. According to producer Yoshinori Ono, the game would include a superior online system (including a long-awaited lobby feature) but consequently would not be compatible with plain ol' SF4.

That, of course, is the crux of the matter - unlike, say, Fallout 3, this won't be a simple DLC update for people who already have Street Fighter IV. Super SF4 will be a retail-disc release, though it won't be a full-price game. While I'm glad to hear that it won't be sold at full price, any and all enthusiasm will be tempered depending on how much it will sell for.

After all, didn't gamers get tired of buying the same game over and over again back around the time Super Street Fighter II Turbo rolled around?

Good god I hated SFIV... with a damn passion. That game is extremely broken.

...however, I'll probally get this just for the sake of having it.

I'm not buying a Street Fighter game until they meet my demands and release the Super Street Fighter IV Alpha Extreme Turbo Producer's Edition Critereon Collection Platinum Hits Deluxe Gold-Disc Game-of-the-Year version. I never invest in anything until it's 10th or 12th reiteration. That's when it starts to get really good, like the last season of a TV show.

The time when I was able to purchase every update of the Street Fighter franchise is long gone. I can see some Street Fighter 4 owners being fairly upset about this, unless they're all used to it already.

I'm so glad I'm only renting IV now. And since this won't be full price I can just get that. :)

Up until they do something entirely stupid like, say... put a SFIV disk check in.

But then again it's a standalone "expansion". Practically is a Gold Edition of the game.

That video was awesome. As for the other stuff... it's cool, I guess. I'm not a fan of Street Fighter so I won't be getting it.

Hence, the "until they do something stupid" Activision stylee.

You know, become customer hating arseholes.

Saw it coming, but this is still a pleasant surprise, what w/ the 8 new characters and such.

Watch them only knock £5 off the full retail price.

If it's got Ibuki and it's $40 or less, I'm sold. Otherwise, forget it.

Im actually more interested in Mokoto and the black kid. I like the change in styles.

Thanks Crapcom for hating people who bought your game.
Although we all saw this coming, I'm saddened that this will be a stand alone, I would have gotten this if it was on the Xbox marketplace even it went for 1,200 points.

I do not like the way they are going with this. Especially since they are basically making you pay for game balancing and such that should effectively be free as a general update. "Oh well we know it's broken based on feedback, but we're going to make you pay for the fix as we release it as a part of our new disc-based expansion".

These are the guys who made us pay for the RE 5 multiplayer mode.

I'm a Street Fighter fan, but I'll skip this one. Truthfully I was so underwhelmed with Stret Fighter IV and it's myriad issues that this doesn't sell me.

To an extent I think Capcom and Namco/Namco-Bandai need to get their stuff together. I'm tired of feeding their greed, and supporting stuff like this even further is just going to encourage it.

*thinks hard*

New character?

AFAICR, Juri sounds very similar to Juni and Juli, part of the original team that included Cammy. It was part of Bison's clone army of magical girls knowing Waif-Fu, so you he's not all that bad.

That's what I thought too, except she looks nothing like either of them.

Oh man this is great news! If Dudley came back I would officially go insane! Not only was he fast, he was strong, had good combos, good priority, and his moves were perfect for mind games. Good to see it coming to the PS3, there's just not enough difference in the online capabilities of SF4 to warrant the price of LIVE. Come on 2010!

This being sold on a disc is better for people like me, actually. I don't exactly feel comfortable spending over a hundred dollars for a few more characters.

Also, I must wonder if they'll fix up Seth in this expansion.

And thus the reason why I didn't purchase SFIV is revealed.

I like the SF series, but not a salivating like that some present.

This iteration I will gladly purchase, undoubtedly complete with the overpiced costume packs as well. Yay for waiting and using hindsight to base your purchases.

You forgot Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Sounds good............. but cant they just remake the 3rd street fighter being the best and more pro then the 4th. Soooo many time sagets spamed his way 2 the top. I hope this even it self out. BUT WHY DO I STILL PLAY THE GAME

I love SFIV, but it is a little unbalanaced. There are a few fighters who are vastly superior and a few that are completely worthless with a few in between. I'm still playing Sakura online because I like the character but it's definitely a disadvantage vs Ryu, Sagat and Ken.

Based on the amount I've played SFIV I think I would probably pay up to $40 for the championship edition, although if it's around $30 I'll get it on launch day.

Hey, fuck Sagat, they need to balance Seth, the cheap bastard.

Colour me disappointed. This is something that could easily be sold via DLC. As much as I do enjoy SF4, I won't pick this up, unless, or until it is budget priced.

Well, then. I might pick this up. I mean, I never really liked fighting games, and with all the praise SFlV is getting, I was kind of on the fence.

I hope all these balancing issues people are talking about are sorted, however.

It actually is supposed to be a budget priced title. At least, so the guys at Capcom are saying at current. But hey, color me excited. I loved SF4. And I'm pretty satisfied with what I've heard about it so far.

No arcade release is kind of strange, though, but I guess that ties into what Inafune was saying.

Glad it's not going as DLC, not every country in the world has ISPs nice enough to give it's subscribers a decent download cap.

I hope they bring Eagle back, but I realised like last month that I suck at Street Fighter despite being a fan and just gonna get Tekken instead.

Hit Seth with a Super Combo. Job done.

I'd rather get no rebalancing at all, it throws all my strategies out the window, but Sagat could do with it.

And Makoto or nothing. If Makoto isn't coming, halt production and burn the existing copies.

Rebalancing characters, 8 more characters, and adding moves onto existing characters = A hefty download and a broken game, especially if you're delving into existing code and tweaking every character. Better it's done right and stuck on a disc, than a 12 GB download that's riddled with bugs.

Christ, Eagle. I completely forgot about him. What SF was he in again? I only remember him from CVS 2.

Watch the public cry shenanigans and skulduggery if they're in the game and others don't make it. Too weak to be standalone characters, too unbalanced to be put together like some alpha games had them.

Then again, they're adding Deejay and frickin' T.Hawk, so I guess them (separate) being bottom tier doesn't stop them from being added...

Makoto or bust.

The very first Street Fighter. Actually that was the only Street Fighter he was ever in. It's also where Gen comes from, who is in Street Fighter IV.

Actually Eagle is also in Street Fighter 3 Alpha for the GBA, as well as Capcom vs. SNK 2 I believe. But yeah, they need to use him more especially since they started basing him off of Freddy Mercury. And I'm not just saying that because I got bored one day and synced up fight footage of Eagle in SFA3 Alpha to "Don't Stop me Now"

I hope they use Posion as one of the new characters. She didn't get enough time in the older Street Fighters, and now gaming has matured to the point where we can say "Yeah, that whole transexual thing from the older SFs was just a stupid play to stop people from freaking out about hitting girls. She really is a woman this time around."

Gen's also in Street Fighter Alpha 3, though. And he's still obscure as hell. I still haven't seen a high level Gen player yet.
