Has the world gone mad , EA as a champion of the underdogs ? What next ? Microsoft making an open-source OS ? /puzzled Note : oh and i hope they stick it hard to Langdell
Did I read it right when he said he wanted to sue EA because Mirror's Edge has Edge in the title? If everyone did that then what we call the f*cking games?! What an idiot.
What a wonderful world we live in.
Oh boy, EA is going to bury them. About time too, this was getting preposterous...
Good. Right on cue. | |
Yeah I know. Although EA has seemed to be pulling its act together as of late, what with Dead Space turning out to be rather bloody good and the first bf2 update in 2 years. If it can pull this off and win the fight against Langdell, thereby winning it for the underdog too, they will earn a place in my heart forever. I've had frequent email feuds with mr Langdell, who, hilariously defends his position that he's the innocent one suffering.
woohoo I actually hope EA wins this one....wow I can`t believe I said that.
MIRRORS!!! I love that pic, makes Tim seem so....petty XD
I think the devil gave them back their souls when he took control of Activision. Perhaps every dveloper in the US should release a co-developed game called Edge, or to be really obtuse, Ej? Langdell would explode in a cloud of righteous indignation and bile... ...never thought I'd say this, but go EA.
i read this earlier today and thought it was great, i love that EA is stepping up to the plate with their army of lawyers. it's not fun having an 800 pound gorilla charging at you i don't see how he can keep this trademark, i can understand only the word edge but not holding it over "mirror's edge" cause it's different
I honestly hope EA crushes him so bad that he is forced to live in a cardboard box. EA probably has more lawyers than Edge has employee's.
It seems ever more so. I remember EA being the ire of the gaming community for it's DRM. Now that hate has apparently switched to Activision, while EA tries to rebuild community trust. I also really hate that picture.
Faith in corporations +1: Your faith now stands at -272.
Although I did see this coming (as did everyone else, probably), I had hoped Langdell wouldn't be stupid enough to go against the corporate megabehemoth that is EA. Here's hoping he turns up to the inevitable hearing wearing a T-shirt with "I WANTZ MOAR MUNYZ LOL" written on it.
You go EA!! | |
I hope they win as if they don't I may be knackered as my name is Edge, not in the pretend bassist from U2 way but in the it's my Surname and I was born with it way!
If i read that right they didn't actually sue EA, just threatened to (probably hoping for a "here's a check, now shut your stupid mouth" settlement) It's EA that went after edge Kinda reminds me of a 5th grader bullying a 3rd grader, then getting his ass kicked by a mafia hitman with a baseball bat (that's probably how it feels like getting trampled by EA)
Good for EA. Nail this guy to the wall!
No, check out the "cancel several trademarks" link in the OP. They've filed with the patent office, and paid the $5,400 fee. They're serious enough about this that it's not just a letter. I'm willing to bet that the Mobigames case has given Langdell's actions enough attention that it's become worth their while to take him out, not only to remove an annoying thorn from their side for their Mirror's Edge line, but for the positive publicity.
You can do it, EA! Kick Langdell in his big hairy balls! Ahem. Sorry, I just loved Happy Gilmore.
Hahahahahahahaa! EA are becoming the good guys! Wow, that's... Awesome. Maybe next they'll sell off the yearly sports franchises and use the frankly silly ammounts of cash they'd get on original games. Of course, there's about an equal chance of Activision games being made for fun any more...
What? EA actually doing something...good?! THE ENTIRE FABRIC OF TIME AND SPACE WILL BE RIPPED TO SHREADS!!! AHH! IT'S HAPPENING NOW. *holds out hand* No, wait, it's just rain. False alarm.
Good. That psycho loony shithead Langdell deserves to take it in the ass by EA. *Flips middle finger* Fuck you to hell Tim Langdell!
No Langdell...EA has more than enough money to take care of this...judging by their statements made earlier in this article, this is a PR stunt. One that will probably bode well for the publisher considering how much angst Langdell has garnered.
Seriously? What does he have a PHD in?
The villain in Modern Warfare 3 should be named "Hedge"...but with the "H" silent as they are in some countries. (I think that is a loophole...)
I hereby trademark the word "The". Use it and you have to pay me royalties.
Unfortunately, the idea that Edge Games will loose their basic trademark is in question. I just looked at their site and Langdell has taken some steps to make it look like Edge is actually developing games. Of course, I'm not sure games developed for the 360 or PS3 are all that easy to port to the iPhone as the list suggests. . . but I'm not a programmer. I could be wrong. Racers for Wii, PS3, 360 and PC Considering I've been to this web site like 2 weeks ago and just noted the change today, I think it is safe to say that Mr. Langdell is very much aware of what he needs to prove at this patent hearing.
One step at a time, friend. One step at a time.
What are Edge claiming "Mirrors" to be, anyway? There's nada about it on their website, and clicking "pre-order" pops up an email to "express interest". Also, RACERS, a game they're claiming to have released recently, doesn't seem to have any reviews attached to it at all. This is intriguing too: http://chaosedge.wordpress.com/2009/09/09/the-myth-behind-mythora/
EA. A generation ago they were the gamers most hated company. Now in this generation they have completely changed. EA are awesome now!
Actually that information has been there a while. When Shamus posted about Tim's efforts to sue Mobigames I noticed all of that. All their software appears to just be vaporware. There are no real screenshots or video demos available for any of the games they have mentioned. The bit with "Mirrors" has been there for months as well.
When the dust settles EA will be back on the douche list don't you worry.
Its not just that they are getting rid of a patent troll a guy who managed to patent the word EDGE 20 years ago and hasn't done anything with it for decades. EA are suing him because he isn't using the name to make games, he's using it to STOP people making games. Also, picking up Brutal Legend when they were dropped by Activision, then being sued by Activision was pretty sweet. Activision didn't want the game so were stupid to try and sue EA for picking it up in the first place. They've been pretty good in general recently. Sorry, my writing is pretty poor tonight. Hopefully you get what I'm on about.
I certainly hope EA wins this, I support them all the way. This whole edge deal is beyond ridiculous.
I never thought I'd hear myself say this but...Go EA. Grind the pretentious git into the dust.

EA Gets Tough With Edge Games
2009 isn't getting any sunnier for Tim Langdell: In the latest blow to the Edge Games honcho, Electronic Arts has filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel numerous trademarks currently registered to his company.
Langdell has earned a reputation in the game industry for his zealous protection of the Edge trademark; his Edge Games website claims affiliation with everything from gaming magazines to PC manufacturers and even movie studios. But trouble started brewing earlier this year when he picked a fight with French developer Mobigame over its release of a popular iPhone game called Edge. Perhaps unexpectedly, Mobigame fought back tenaciously, drawing a lot of attention and shining an unwanted light on some of Edge Games' less-than-savory tactics over the years.
Now, like the Italian army charging into France, EA has leaped into the fray, asking the PTO to cancel several trademarks currently registered to Edge Games: "Edge," "The Edge," "Gamer's Edge" and "Cutting Edge." The matter was brought to a head by Edge's reaction to Mirror's Edge, the primary-colored parkour game that came out in late 2008. Edge Games has "continuously threatened" to sue EA since its release, the company said, and now it's decided to push back.
"While this seems like a small issue for EA, we think that filing the complaint is the right thing to do for the developer community," the publisher said in a statement. "A lot of small developers who are faced with this situation settle claims because they don't know how, or can't afford to fight for their rights. We hope that as a result of this action, other developers will be less intimidated by unwarranted legal threats."
Obviously EA's motives aren't entirely altruistic but if other developers benefit as a result, I don't think anyone is going to complain too loudly. Except perhaps Dr. Langdell himself; in a statement to Gamasutra, an Edge Games representative said, "This petition by EA is clearly a desperate attempt by EA to see if they can win the right to use Mirror's Edge by forcibly removing Edge's legitimate rights to [the trademark] Edge. None of EA/Dice's claims in its petition have any basis in fact and their petition is thus certain to fail."
