Random Nintendo Trivia With Shigeru Miyamoto

image

Ever wondered what Kirby was originally going to be called, or what Nintendo of America thought about the name Wii? Well, now you can find out.

Speaking at the Digital Contents Expo, the same place the VR Buggy came from, Shigeru Miyamoto delivered a keynote speech that let us in to a load of interesting Nintendo trivia.

Amongst the 'revelations' were such gems as the fact that Kirby's original name was "Tinkle Popo" or that - surprise, surprise - Nintendo America and Nintendo Europe weren't all that keen on the name Wii. All the same, it's interesting to hear him say that the GameCube controller was a "little failure", or how Nintendo initially opposed the creation of Legend of Zelda.

You can read it all for yourself here, provided you can read Japanese that is.

...can we have a translation?

edit: nvm, I didn't notice the other link had one.

Shigeru Miyamoto is the exact same age as my father. Same birthday, same year.

He's a great man...also, The translation was rough but still an interesting read.

GameCube controller was a failure?

Gamecube controller? Failure? It had my favourite design along with the Super Nintendo. At least the small ones.

You guys are stuck on the controller thing? Tinkle Popo Really? Really?! That's just as bag as Wii... and sounds just as gross.

Tinkle popo, I died a little inside

Thats a new fact about Kirby for me. The only interesting thing I know about Kirby is that he was named after a japanese vacuum cleaner. Also the GameCube controller rocks.

Anywho... Really? Nintendo opposed Zelda?

I don't even like Nintendo all that much these days, but you gotta be heartless not to love Shiggy.

Hah, Tinkle Popo.

Quadtrix:
GameCube controller was a failure?

It is my favorite out of all the Nintendo controllers, and my Favorite of the Gamecube generation. I loved it.

No, he was clearly named after the vacuum cleaner from The Brave Little Toaster image

I don't know if that's anachronistic or not and I don't care.

Also, I honestly liked the GameCube controller.

wow.
Also I remember when G4 did a interview with him and said he got a lot of LoZ ideas from the caves he explored as a kid. That was back when G4 was good

....Tinkle Popo?

*laughs uncontrollably*

i sorta understand being against legend of zelda, the hero in the game is link, link does all the work, we relate to link, we love link and they choose to name the game after the frozen girl who does nothing, any way im going to play the peach brothers 2 now.

Wow, so he IS left handed? Nice. I do so love trivia <3

Quadtrix:
GameCube controller was a failure?

yeah tons of people complained about it and how it was shaped and the controlling issues surrounding it

Adam Sessler on XPlay loved to complain about it

Quadtrix:
GameCube controller was a failure?

Yeah, what kind of broken statement is that? That thing fondles the contours of my fingers every time I pick it up. I honestly don't know which controller is better between DualShock and that one.

Good to see the trivia, cheered me up for some reason.

Wrong. He was named after some lawyer guy that helped Nintendo back in the days.
His name was [Something] Kirby
