There was Natural Selection, Science & Industry, and Knights, Pirates, and Vikings (may have messed up the name sequence on the end one there). They all had their moments, but, out of all of them, NS had the most visceral experience. The first few times I played it, I ended up as one of the marines, and we got annihilated. It wasn't until a veteran commander came in that we started to win. He had a mic on, and started barking out these orders and everyone just hupped too. The aliens didn't stand a chance. It was the first encounter with true online co-operation. Strangers working together fluidly and without squabbles. It was beautiful to behold. |

NS2 contains all of these things, and that's not including the alien class that teleports or the monster that can send marines flying. One of the most innovative things about NS1, to me, was that while the marine team had a commander directing them, the aliens had a limited wallhack which allowed them to organize -- almost organically. From my understanding this is changing somewhat.. hopefully not too drastically, but we'll have to see. And for those of you who tried NS1 and found it too confusing and/or got steamrolled too fast, my understanding is that the dev's have heard these complaints and are trying to take steps to make the game a little more forgiving for new players -- the base alien class is a little slower and tougher for instance. So easier to control, easier to hit, but can handle a few more hits as well. It's one of the few games I've played where "vicious" can be an accurate description for some of the attacks and ambushes that happen, and when a team gels it can be simply amazing. Of course, I've already pre-ordered so I could be a bit biased. |

What are you talking about? |

No, it's not. I guess that's the reason they can make us pay for it. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 688 Joined: 22 Dec 2008 | Heh... I fall into probably that one percent of people who was in desperate need of this news. Long ago I had discovered the world of mods and probably played at least thirty different half life mods in my freshman year of college. A few stuck with me, but it wasn't long before I was overwhelmed with work, and soon after the necessity of a new computer became apparent as I had no chance of running any new games anymore (and could barely run Day of Defeat at the time as it was). So I dump the old one for something brand new... but a few years later I could not remember the name of that one mod, you know, the one where one side plays the aliens and the other one is humans, and they're fighting for resources, no, not Starcraft, it's a mod for Half-Life... And then, years later, when I've all but forgotten about it, this news comes along. Thank you! (I edited this thing three times to make it shorter. Brevity be damned!) |

I never heard of mod but after watching the videos it has me interested in it. |

It was uploaded to youtube this year, but I'm sure I saw it like two years ago, if not earlier. I am looking forward to NS2, however, as the original NS was one of the most polished HL1 mods around. |

Trust me, if you ever liked Alien vs Predator of any of those sorts of games, NS is an absolutely awesome mod. So much fun, so much strategy needed to win. Easily the best mod to come out of the first Half-life game. |

Like Assassin's Creed II! Maybe worth it, doubt it the only good commercial mods are TF and CS |

THAT'S THEIR ALPHA?! I'm officially interested in this mod. Btw, trailer appears to be fairly old. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1798 Joined: 29 May 2008 | I never got massively in to Natural Selection, but i could see the quality of it at every turn. It really is in the upper echelon of mods, mods that pretty much have become as worthy as games in their own right, like Counter-Strike and Desert Combat, possibly even surpassing their originals. |

If you have Half-Life I would recommend you download the original (its free), the community is likely extremely small at this point but if you can get a game going it will give you a feel of what to expect. |

Basically, some guys play as big aliens who can eat the marines whole, and theres the commander who plays it RTS-style, and ofc, the marines who get the short end of the stick. Being, of course, eaten alive by all the aliens. Good times. I was super excited about this, having always said this great mod needs a source port, until of course, I saw it Wasnt source, and it wasnt a free mod. Phail. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 547 Joined: 8 Jul 2008 | I LOVED the original, I think I might preorder this as my birthday present :D |
Press Junketeer Posts: 455 Joined: 15 Feb 2008 | Natural Selection was fucking brilliant. Along with CS and DoD (and MANY more) it should give you a pretty good idea of what mods can turn out to be. This is why mod tools always should be available for games. |
