The Prince of Persia Movie's First Trailer is Surprisingly Good

Judging by this trailer for the upcoming Prince of Persia film starring Jake Gyllengarbleflitz, the movie won't be taking home any Academy Awards - but it might actually be pretty decent.

Okay, let's get this out of the way: Though the movie is called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, if you go into watching the trailer with the idea that it will be a completely faithful retelling - or even a retelling at all - of the beloved last-generation title, you're going to be disappointed. It seems to be loosely based on an amalgamation of the four most recent PoP games (the trappings of the Sands of Time trilogy, with the interaction between the Prince and the girl a bit more like that of the Prince and Elika in last year's installment), with the idea of "Okay, there's a Persian Prince, and there's a Dagger of Time and the Sands of Time. That's everything, right? We can make the rest up as we go along."

True, this movie isn't going to be groundbreaking, and there's plenty of action/adventure movie tropes and cliches visible in just the trailer alone, but it actually doesn't look too bad at all. Jake Gyllensomething, though not being Persian by any stretch of the means, is a perfectly fine actor, it's clear that Jerry Bruckheimer has been able to wrangle quite the special effects budget, and Harry Gregson-Williams is doing the soundtrack.

Best of all, if the trailer is any indication, the movie might at least try to replicate the acrobatic climbing/running/jumping that the series is known for. Because wallrunning (and doing a flip over some chump to stab the aforementioned chump in the kidneys) is completely awesome.

Will it be Best Picture of the year and change your worldview forever? No. But does it have the potential to be a genuinely good videogame flick? ...yeah. Yeah, it kind of does.

Looks good:-)
Not great art, but who really cares about that anyway:-)

looks alright

no, it will suck, I'm certain of that

Oh dear, Jake Gyllangelo so does not look right in this role.

its too early to call. Wait a couple of months for more footage and then we will see.

Alfred (f*cking) Molina = atleast glance worthy.

looks...lame

Mmmmmm, Miss Arterton, might be worth going to see this thing after all

HUBILUB:

Yeah, but it looks like it will suck less that most video game movies.

also, he looks like the "Warrior Within" prince.

More faithful than I expected (as in not at all) but not faithful enough.

I don't understand why they couldn't have taken the script directly from game to movie; there's already a great story there!

In fact this is one of the few game's I can think of that could be communicated perfectly into a movie, un yet they just decide to take elements of every game and make what looks like quiet frankly a mess.

meh... A wise man once said "You can't judge a film by its trailer, any more then a game by its hype" or something like that.

Huh. We all know that a good trailer is about as good an indicator of the movie's quality as a coin toss is, but from what it shows, it won't be horrible. Hopefully. To the cast and crew: Keep Uwe Boll the hell away from this. Thank you.

Well Jordan Mecner, creator of the original game and the primary scripter for PoP: The Sands of Time did write the story/screenplay for the movie so hopefully it won't be that bad. Still, Jake Gyllenhal is very, very white.

Hey, it can't be worse than the voice actor in the new game...can it?

I dunno. It looks like another overblown CGI fest devoid of spirit, at least to me. And Jake Gyllenheimer Schimdt does not at all seem to fit the role.

Looks decent. I'd probably wait for the DVD release, but it's still early days to judge.

Looks ok, but I'm not going to get excited, if the Resident Evil movies taught me anything it's that no matter how much you like a game or how popular it is, odds are it wouldn't make a good movie.

The trailer did its job in making the film look alright. That's not to say that the film will be, but it looks far more promising than almost any other game to film adaptation I've seen.

I'll wait until I see more before I pass judgement...

Agreed, the story might be decent but it seems a bit Mummy-esc in humor, a very bad thing.

I'll watch it but I won't go to the theaters and waste my money. I'll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD.

It'll be shit. All videogame movies are and ever will be.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been my favourite game since the day it came out. This trailer looks pretty okay. SoT admittedly didn't have a storyline worthy of a movie (the characters were the highlight of the storytelling, after all) so I'm okay with them taking it in a more cinema-worthy direction.

The humour in the trailer isn't very good, though.

Anybody else think that the bit where he's rewinding time looks like an homage to the bit in the Two Thrones where the Prince spirals around as he turns into the Dark Prince?

EDIT: Music by Harry-Gregson Williams is an automatic super-plus.

Hmm...

Funny story; As soon as I saw the Pirates of the Caribbean logo, I forgot this was Prince of Persia and expected Captain Jack Sparrow to arrive.

I'll put this in the films I will not go to see but maybe rent five years later.

Looks like a fun popcorn action flick at worst. Honestly, so much negativity here.

What, am I the only person to have enjoyed the dystopian bent given to the Mario film?

Hey Tomb raider was okay.... This actually looks really good.

Sigh... I would be happy as long as it doesn't suck, but only so slightly. The annoying thing is that now the story is going to suck, and people will be saying "Well it's based on a video game, so what would you expect," but the story of the game, the story they FREAKING SHOULD be telling, was amazing. Sigh...

tbh they should've kept the original story, it was epic.

it will never match the awesomeness of the games.

It looks like a moderately entertaining action adventure flick with comedy moments. I'll probably enjoy it.

The woman is fucking annoying already though.

We need Yahtzee to give his opinion on this in the nect Extra Punctuation.

Gay cowboys in Persia with revealing outfits?

Count me in!

It looks like "Pirates of the Caribbean", and no that is not a complement. Unfortunately it looks like they didn't get what made Prince of Persia so good.

I dunno... from that trailer, I'm not optimistic. Acting/writing seem a bit poor. Story doesn't sound promising. Art direction, while vivid, is a bit ridiculous.

But, who knows? Maybe the trailer people are to blame.
