Spirit Tracks Trailer Reveals Zelda's Secret

In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, there is more to Zelda than meets the eye. No, she doesn't transform into a car.

This new Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks trailer shows us that Zelda will co-star right alongside Link for presumably the entire game, partially taking on a companion role similar to that of Navi. However, Zelda will also have the power to do much more than fly around your head and yell "Hey!" In Spirit Tracks, Zelda can possess enemies to help Link get through certain parts of the game's dungeons.

In the trailer, Zelda gets zapped by an enemy's powerful magic, turning her into a sort of spirit. Part of Link's goal in Spirit Tracks is likely to change Zelda back to normal, though Zelda's form does allow her the power of possession. This power could be limited to only the phantom knights shown in the trailer, but it would be very cool if she could inhabit other forms as well.

It's nice to see that Spirit Tracks will be more than Phantom Hourglass with a Choo Choo Train. When Zelda is in the body of a phantom knight, she is able to block streams of fire so Link can pass by, and can carry Link across dangerous areas. New items are also shown off in the trailer, including the whip (that looks like a snake) which gives Link the ability to swing across chasms, whip enemies, and pull switches, and a brand new item that fires off a whirlwind.

I always look forward to the creativity that comes from every high profile Nintendo title. Fanboy or not, I even enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine. This holiday season will only see the release of two: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but they are both looking great. Now, if I can just finish Phantom Hourglass before Spirit Tracks' December 7 release date.

I'm still on the fence with this game. If it's too much like Phantom Hourglass then I won't bother with it.

They did something like this is the horrible TV series of Zelda. Except Link is spiritised and Zelda has to do his work for him. God that show sucked.

All together now: "Excuuuuuuse me princess!"

...if I had a DS or whatever console this runs on (Yes, I'm a pc gamer mainly why do you ask?) I'd buy this

The game still looks ugly. (... And why am I reminded of Golden Sun: The Lost Age when I hear the music?)

Oh, god dammit Nintendo...

Yeah, I think the whole idea of the train sucks, but the game actually looks like it could be good now.

Why do they always do this to me with Zelda games? DAMN YOU! *raises fist*

Wait wait wait, you now have a companion that possess enemies for you? Nice.

I got more excited with the fact that you have a whip in this game. I just started playing Castlevania. So....Yay!

And once again Nintendo proves it can add new mechanics to its long-running franchises and thus keep them fresh. You'd think after almost 25 years of this people would learn to stop doubting.

Random argument man:
Wait wait wait, you now have a companion that possess enemies for you? Nice.

I lol'd at the part that while in a giant suit of armor she screams at what looked like a spider or a rat.

but actually this looks pretty good, dont know how great having a steampunk-esque train to help you on your journeys will effect gameplay, I know with wind waker you had an entire game by itself with your boat, maybe you can take goods to different towns? maybe passengers? probably even defend against train robbers.

Zelda does not transform into a car? Booooooo! We want originality!

Seriously though, adding a bit of new mechanics can be very helpful to such a long-running series. But still...

WHY DOES NOT she transform into a car?! That would be,like, totally awesome!

Hmmm.
I shall now add this game to the "I may want it" list.
The Spirt mechanic looks like i could have some interesting uses.

The game looks fun, I mean I prefer Zeldas pirate forme though.
I would also prefer a wii Zelda game, like a lot more...like a lot lot more.

I hope the whip also lets him snatch a fancy fedora before it gets trapped behind a stone door.

Lol, it's nice to finally see Zelda as one of the main characters in a game named after her. Can't wait for this game, gonna get it for Christmas.

Well this game has an interesting look to it and i would try it but sadly i no have a DS so until i get that first i wont be able to play it. On a side note..i cant help but notice that when Zelda was the spirit ball she looked a lot like Navi. I hope she's not like that throughout the game and yelling at you "HEY i can posses this guy"

Ugh.

The Legend of Zelda: Fast Travel Gimmick #3

We don't talk about that piece of television fecal matter 'round these here parts, compadre.

That said, I can't stand the look of this new one, much like I couldn't stand the look of Phantom Hourglass and Wind Waker before it. Is there any reason those two games couldn't be the graphical equivalents of Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time? Maybe this is the reason I started to hate the anime art style, but mostly I just can't stand how they made a realistic-looking fantasy (Oxymoron! Hooray!) series look so stupid. Twilight Princess at least made amends, but then it had to have Wii stick-waggle controls. I'm getting off topic, so let me just say this: Stop with the stupid anime-style look and stick-waggle/stylus-touching and get back to the quasi-realism button-mashing!

Ooh, now I'm REALLY interested in this game. Phantom Hourglass was a work of genius (no matter what Yahtzee thinks) so I knew in advance that this would PLAY well, but now the plot sounds really interesting. This will be the first time that Link has teamed up with Zelda for his entire adventure- could this possibly be the first real Link/Zelda romance story?

On the other hand, I am just the TINIEST bit disappointed to find that this isn't a further direct sequel to Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass. I thought it'd be nice if, just for once, there was a Zelda story arc that went for more than 2 games (Zelda 1/2, Link to the Past/Link's Awakening, Oracle of ages/Oracle of Seasons, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass).

I'm having flashes of Mother 3 when I hear this part...
And that's not a bad thing.

The Legend of Zelda: Fast Travel Gimmick #3

Would you rather travel everywhere by foot?

I saw this picture a few days ago and it's too funny to pass up: http://www.kdingo.net/champ/pics/main.php?g2_itemId=9705

And who needs to transform into a car when they can just possess it?

Well, even so, I probably won't get this. Zelda seems like it's going a bit to the gimmicky side, and after Phantom Hourglass, the only Zelda game that I couldn't be bothered to finish, I don't have such high hopes for this.

So it was Zelda who took control of the Phantoms in the E3 trailer. I was interested in how Link wasn't getting sliced to shreds. Either way, I said this before, and I'll say the concept again: "Indiana Link". Nintendo had better not pull a fast one and put this as a DSi-only title.

Meh. Though I was actually fond enough of Phantom Hourglass to complete it once, this game immediately lost my interest when its hook was that Link gets a train. This concept has yet to appeal to me, regardless of the Ghost Zelda concept not being that bad.

Really? I kept anticipating the song to be "The Scar of Time" from Chrono Cross (the one from the intro). It was really throwing me off.

Re: the game...

I hate the bobble-head Zelda series, they've been one suckfest after another. This one looks good, and may be the one that changes my stance on Zelda's DS lineup, but I'm not holding my breath either. Zelda + DS = Gimmicky crap that detracts from gameplay.

Man I wish they'd just port Zelda 1, 2, and 3 onto the DS. Link to the Past was the best of the whole series. If I could have that on my DS, I'd never put the damn thing down.

Damn it! You beat me to it! *sulks away and changes his name to Snake Rope*

OT: The game still looks amazing. And I guess it's now a toss-up between Spirit Tracks and Dragon Age...hopefully I'm able to get both.

O.o

I WANT THAT GAME!!!

too bad the graphics looke like ass... but still seem really fun!

Oh come on, I can see right through you to your true intentions...

You just want to play it so you can have Zelda possess creatures, so that you can kill them, and in a small way, feel like you're getting back at her for the countless years of questing she caused you. Teach her a lesson for constantly being captured (or put into a deep sleep), rescued, then not putting out. Right?

That or you just want to possess someone and make them attack chickens, so they don't zerg rush Link for the abuse.

While I'm waiting for this trailer to load, I think I'd like to point out that a venerable snail could laterally cross the entire former Soviet Union faster than Gametrailers.com loads a 5-minute video.

Now then. I can't really say much about the trailer itself, standard Zelda fare. The cel-shaded cartoon graphics are still as offensive to the eye as ever. But I think the thing that stands out the most to me is that Miyamoto is now resorting to stealing plot ideas from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

Magnatek:

Is the internal structure of the DSi really so different from the original as to make this game an exclusive? I mean, what possible use could a Zelda game have for a camera?

Wait, where does Zelda go once she's not needed? She seems to reside in Link's, err, pocket.

My god, I hope Link has pockets...

I agree one hundred percent. This is why Nintendo gets away with their franchise whoring, people.

so long as its not more super saiyan retardedness, its cool.

I've never understood people's hate on the whole train concept. I actually kind of like the idea. I hope that Nintendo utilizes it to its fullest potential, but there's quite a bit of potential there.

That said, I'll be picking this up.

I started off doubtful of the train thing, but now I realise that there's nothing wrong with it after seeing a few trailers.

This game looks awesome! I really liked Phantom Hourglass, but I'm also hoping that this has a definitive end. I hate games that leave you on an endless day, like in Hourglass.

Khell_Sennet:

God, that song was depressing. That's really what I wanted to say...

This does look good, I haven't really touched the handheld Zelda titles since the Oracle series, though.
