This shouldn't cause much trouble. Then again, it's happening on the PC version... again.
I was going to get the game until I found out about the price hike. Instead I got Dragon Age: Origins.
poor, poor pc users always getting screwed over because some people do not see you as a sutible platform, perhaps it the idea that the pc was not ment for gamming a much as it was for typing or web browsing, but still it's a little unfair what keeps going on. ( I own a wii so I kinda know what it feels to be screwed over)
Ha-ha. What do they have against PC version? No,seriously. It looks like they are deliberately shooting PC-gamers - and themselves - in the feet. With a rocket launcher.
This could well have been a deal done with brick and mortar distributors who wanted to find some kind of way of hurting digital distribution on a very specific high profile title. Gamestop in particular is very much against digi distribution since it cuts them out of the picture entirely. This is, of course just a guess.
Oh, that sucks. Good thing I prefer having a hard-copy over digital downloads. Go me! But seriously, I get the feeling that this game will be the beginning of the end for PC gamers, especially since it will still be horrendously popular (while I hate what they've done to the game, it doesn't actually worry me all that much, because the single player was fantastic, and I'm going to avoid the multiplayer like the plauge).
At last the tides have turned! Now we, the console owners get to brag! I don't mean that in a serious way. That's somewhat random, what with there being no rhyme or reason to this.
What's next? They will be making it so that servers are open only for 8 hours a day? 1. Higher price. And now this. I ignore the controversy, because it's on all consoles, but come on.
I think this is just another breach of conditions. They said it would be available at a certain time, yet again DRM aka Steam is preventing legitimate users playing a game they have purchased. DRM clearly punishes legitimate consumers. As a protest I'll buy it from a retailer on the 360, it's only £26 in the main supermarkets and unlike digital distribution, Activision will only see a fraction of that money going to them.
Quoted for truth. | |
Get me Bad Company 2! God, when Bobby Kotick said he was taking the fun out of making games, I didn't think it was for gamers too.
Infinity Ward doesn't care about PC gamers.
EDIT: Whoops, hilarious misinterpretation is hilarious. I lost track of the dates involved. I'm going to wait for further info: odds are that to release the game late, there's a damn good reason involved.
Are they trying to get everyone who uses a PC mad at them? Are they getting back at the pirates of the original PC game?
Gutted. I'm getting the feeling more and more that I'll only be buying MW2 for the Single player; Activision/ IW really dont seem to give two shits and a fuck about the PC online play, almost deliberately crippling it, then delaying steam users. I reckon I'll be getting my online kicks from Bad Company 2 instead. Roll on 2010!
Do they want PC gamers to play this game?
Malygris, given the coverage of the PC release how can you arrive at any other conclusion? The Ustream podcast announcement, that Ars Technica article, it's so thorough and effective it can't possibly be accidental. I mean, in a live chat, where the question was whether or not pc gamers would get console commands, custom server options, very basic customisation options that the answer should be a straight for 'yes'. Nevermind the now infamous answers: Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version? Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings. Wow, mouse control, way to rock my world. As well as: DudezTY: Since we cannot kick people in ranked matches, how will we stop hackers who get past VAC? Mackey-IW: Our goal is to ban hackers from the game. It's so obviously aimed at sabotaging it's PC release to give Actibliz an excuse to avoid pc developing in future without annoying the share holders...
the release is two days after the originally stated one - dick move by Activision. Valve are also realy bad for abiding by release dates, they shouldn't make a promise of release if they can't keep it. This simply comes down to M$ and Activision wanting to scrape as much cash and unit sales as possible for Xbox 360.
This is "news"? I remember reading something a month ago about how the PC version was released a day or two later then the console version for some stupid reason... Doesn't surprise me at all with having to wait weeks after consoles for the map packs for World at War...
No, they want their money but don't want any piracy. They want you to go out and buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 and a copy of the game where it's easier to sell you DLC.
This, more than likely. I've become pretty convinced that IW/Activison simply want an excuse not to bother with PC versions in future MW games 'because of piracy and we can't milk enough money out of it' as they'd phrase it.
Its like PC gamer hell, they couldn't kill the Wii so now they have turned on the only other platform for gaming the PC. What happened to the time when a games launch meant it was out everywhere? Also what happened to testing a game to the breaking point before releasing it? I'm over reacting but still, I think if it wasn't for CoD4 MW2 wouldn't be doing this well, its almost like a conglomerate of unpopular choices on the PC, and i think just like the economy its gonna get worse before it gets better (if it gets better)
Hey, its only paranoia if its not true ;)
I would care but I'm too busy playing games from companies that actually support PC users.
Wow, this kind of stupidity deserves a medal. All they are doing is convincing people to not use Steam as a digital download platform. Or bother with the PC version altogether.
To be honest I'd rather have valve's titles than their's ^^
But the disc copy you can get in the store seems to be working right now. Two days before the Steam bough version works. And both versions use Steam... This doesn't make sense really. I have to say, those in charge of this release and game have really proved their intelligence... I think I have to see what else they are going to release the next few years. Hope they don't have anything I want, 'cause I really don't want anything to do with them ever again. (Not that I am going to buy MW2 anyway)
Just suck it up and get the 360 version then. PC gaming is dead anyway.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHAHAH! *wipes tear* Hah...hah...heh... Oh god, you're serious?
Personally if that's the case i think out of spite a lot more people are gonna pirate the game, every action has a reaction and if they are trying to force us into the console market then everyone is gonna get to the point where they are just gonna say screw it.
I've kept out of the MW2 discussions so far, since I didn't feel like jumping into that shark-infested pool of hate. I was gonna give IW the benefit of the doubt (and I still am), since for me MP is an interesting extra, not necessarily an integral component of the game - if it was SP-only, I'd buy it anyway. That said, I'm starting to get pretty pissed off myself. I pre-purchased the game on Steam about two and a half weeks ago, for the full €60, expecting to be able to download and play it on the 10th. This was before I knew about the controversy. Then I started seeing more and more "IW is screwing you over!" threads here on TE, with more and more talk about the PC version having gimped MP. But like I said, MP is an additional bonus for me, not a primary requirement, so I let it slide. Then I hear about stores selling it for about half as much as I paid for it, before the release date. And now this bullshit. I'll still give IW the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the SP campaign, but really, I'm starting to believe the conspiracy theories about IW/Activision gimping the PC release on purpose. The SP campaign had better be pretty damn good.
Oh noes! It's a troll!!! Anyway, as far as the topic is concerned, they are just begging us to pirate this game. I am deeply considering it, just to gibe them the same middle finger that they are giving us. PC Gamers are not a crowd you should screw with, and we are still a valuable part of the market. I think Activision/Infinity Ward need to be reminded of this...
Well if activision want to drop the pc as a platform i only have one thing to say to them... Don't let door hit your ass on the way out! The last game i actually bought for pc published by them was doom 3! So i won't lose any sleep about no more pc games from them.
Damn Right Good Sir. All my money has gone to buy L4D2 by Valve. A company that started on PC like, oh lets say... Infinity Ward. And Still Care about the PC unlike, Oh lets say... Infinity Ward.

Steam Users Can't Play Modern Warfare 2 Until Thursday
Bad news for people who purchased Modern Warfare 2 over Steam: Valve has confirmed that the digital version of the game will remain locked and unplayable until Thursday.
The PC release of Modern Warfare 2 is already a mess, but that's not to suggest it couldn't get any messier. In fact, it just did, at least for those of you unfortunate enough to have purchased the game on Steam. Folks who trundled off to their local game dealer to pick up a copy are probably happily playing it at this very moment, but anyone who decided to take advantage of the ease and convenience of Steam are screwed until Thursday.
"Those who purchase the retail copy will be able to activate and play the game on November 10 via Steam," Valve told Kotaku. "Those who purchase on Steam will be able to activate and play on November 12."
Nobody seems to know exactly why this is the case but making it even more irritating is the fact that the retail version of the game uses Steam for DRM. In other words, you're using Valve's digital service no matter which version of the game you have but if you thought that laying down your money and preloading the game would have you playing it the very moment it was launched, well, you guessed wrong, son.
I don't want to be accused of paranoia here but I'm honestly starting to wonder if Activision and Infinity Ward aren't screwing up the PC launch of Modern Warfare 2 on purpose. Unless Valve pleaded with Activision for a two-day break so its servers wouldn't be crushed under the pressure of the launch (and if so, then perhaps Steam should have been reconsidered as the DRM of choice) then what possible reason could their be for putting a limitation like this on a digital release?
