Someone Is Actually Making a Minesweeper Adventure Game

image

Veteran adventure game studio Revolution Software is creating an adventure game based on Minesweeper. Yes, that Minesweeper.

This one gets filed under "Wait, what?": When G4TV blogger Patrick Klepek spoke with Martin de Ronde, co-founder of the charity OneBigGame, he apparently wasn't expecting the guy to informally announce - of all things - an adventure game in development based on classic Windows freeware timewaster Minesweeper.

The title is in development by the adventure game veterans at UK-based Revolution Software - best known for titles like Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword - and helmed by respected adventure designer Charles Cecil. Cecil has been hard at work on the project already, says de Ronde:

"[Cecil has] come up with a back story for as to why the mines are there, he's come up with characters ... It's turning out to be a really, really cool game in terms of mechanics and also in terms of the setting and the universe..."

What? The setting and the universe? It's a freeware game where you click on little boxes to uncover numbers to plant flags on mines! Is the little smiley face guy going to be the lead character here? Does he put on his sunglasses at the end like he's David freakin' Caruso in CSI Miami? Though, to be fair, I guess if the College Humor guys could do it, it isn't that unbelievable. The real question, though, is whether any of us could ever hope to actually take this thing seriously.

(Thanks, Mr LS!)

Minesweeper is so satisfying once you now how to play.

And by 'Adventure game' I hope they don't mean 'Point and click adventure game loosely based on Minesweeper but has no relation gameplay-wise'.

Well, that'd be cool anyway.

What?
No.
No.
Just no. That's plain thick.

>You are standing in a minefield. It is dark, you are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Lol, it took me ages to figure out how to play the damn thing on my Windows 95! What hope have I got for the adventure game?

If it's similar to the Minesweeper movie, it will be the first game I've preordered in over a year.

Stole my god-damn idea! I've genuinely been pondering over how minesweeper could be taken to the next level. Or.. several levels.

Damn, ninja'd by the article itself :P

Though, really, if you think about it. Broken Sword is a point-and-click game; you move your cursor over stuff and click to interact with the environment. In Minesweeper, you move your cursor over a square, and..... you get the idea.

.....okay, seriously, 'fess up now. Which one of you hacked Revolution's computers and set the date to April 1st?

Wow! That sounds awesome!

I want one!

Oh my god. I feel that smiley face is,indeed, going to put on the sunglasses like he's David freakin' Caruso at the end of a game.

YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!!!

You can never learn how to play!
My review speaks for itself.

More on topic, this is pretty interesting. I'm intrigued, to say the least.
We'll have to see what comes of this...adventure-style Minesweeper.

Microsoft will never sell this IP. Too valueable.

Oi can bloody well try!

*tries*

It was awful.

That review is brilliant btw.

I am very much intrigued, Odd thing is I don't know why...

I'd play that! :)

*BOOM* It looks like that last mistake...

*puts on glasses*

...was mine.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhh!

Makes you think about what other old games thay would make into adventure games..Solitare, pong etc.

If it's anything like the College Humor movie, then it will be an awesome game.

I actually want to play this game so badly it hurts. I'm a sucker for punishing, unforgiving sadistic games.

It's why I continue to play Dungeon Lords.

I smell a movie script in the making! MINESWEEPER... a Michael Bay film. Starring David Caruso, Paris Hilton, and Jean Claude Vandamme. "They're just one click away from /destruction/!"

I chortled.

Interesting, my only question is how the hell are they going to characterize the Main Character? Is it going to be like that College Humor episode? Or perhaps a game based on a person playing the game, based on a person playing the game, based on a person playing the game... never mind...
