Fox & Friends Shoots at Modern Warfare 2

Representatives from /gamer and Common Sense Media debated Modern Warfare 2's controversial terrorist mission on Fox & Friends this morning, with what has unfortunately become the typical result.

This morning on the talk show Fox & Friends, the hosts discussed Modern Warfare 2 with Jon Christensen from /gamer and Jim Steyer, Founder of Common Sense Media, an advocacy group for family-safe media. The tag from Fox before the commercial was, "Modern Warfare 2, a game that lets you play as a terrorist. Is the game going too far? We're going to have a fair and balanced debate to find out." The discourse predictably leaned toward inflammatory statements regarding violence and videogames.

Steyer started off by claiming that his personal opinion is unquestionable evidence by saying, "There's no doubt there's a link between violent video games and kids." Apparently, Steyer has not seen any studies or scholarly assessments which refute the link between violence and videogames.

The hosts then attempted to draw the gamer representative, Christensen, into a trap regarding the mission where you play as a terrorist. The gambit worked. "You're not actually a terrorist. You're a CIA undercover agent," he starts off explaining before unfortunately getting lost in the details. "You are infiltrating a terrorist organization and the game specifically says, when you go into, uh when you work with this terrorist organization. You are um... [pause] You are a a a uh a a a CIA operative. [laughs] I'm sorry," he apologized. Couldn't the gaming community have gotten a more verbose spokesperson? *Raises hand*

The segment ends with a stern reminder that parents must be responsible when purchasing games for their children. This, at least, is something that I can get behind. The only way a small kid could play an adult game is if a parent were to purchase it and leave it around the house. The same is true of pornography, but you don't hear about Fox News clamoring for the ban of all porno, do you?

In fact, they're using it to attract viewers.

Update: Added YouTube video of the segment. It is just as awkward as you thought.

I don't watch fox (mainly because I'm British), but it seems extremely unfair that they didn't even bother getting an actual gamer to debate. It was all horribly one sided.

Fox can kiss me on the pooper.

Siiggghh... I was waiting for this to happen..

*sigh* So many ill-informed American (and even the BBC) stations snipe at video gaming, hell im British and I know Jack Thompsons a dick, I cant wait for when the internet kills T.V and we dont have to listen to there flawed research data.

I think Fox need to learn that just saying something is a "Fair and balanced debate" doesn't necessarily make it so.

My thoughts exactly

I stopped paying attention to this crap. Gamers don't care, and they can't really do anything about it. EA could probably buy out FOX in the decade if Sims expansion packs keep going on

What a shocker! Turns out they don't know what they're talking about nor do they understand the subject matter about which they are madly ranting. As per usual with anything Fox News has ever done in the history of creation.

In conclusion, fuck Fox News sideways with a rusty poleaxe.

That's it, VIVA LA REVOLUTION, BITCHES!

That's funny because I'm sure a lot of young republicans bought the game. I'm conservative leaning and I'll probably buy the game in the future.

Wow, well that cements my views of fox firmly in place between The Sport and lol cats.

Aside from the previously pointed out untruths surrounding gaming violence, it does say a lot when the best they could get for an interview was someone from a sight which has only been running for around a year and has little in the way of actual standing with the gaming culture(aside: does anyone else think that website was terribly designed?).

Huh, the game's been out for over 36 hours. I'm amazed it took them this long, frankly!

When even gamers are bitching that a level's gone too far, you just know Fox is gonna jump onto it.

Awesome! I give Fox News a giant pat on the back. I'm pretty sure that report convinced at least a few to go pick up the game. So let's all just thank Fox News for the free advertisement. Fox has been going on about the evils of video games long enough that anyone who did take this report seriously, wasn't thinking about buying the game, anyway.

They should be celebrating the level as a brutally honest depiction of a terrorist attack from the point-of-view of a terrorist, bringing to us a whole new perspective on the panic, pain, and carnage the victims of said attacks experience.

But then we might be acknowledging that video games can *gasp* serve some kind of good for us, and we can't have that now can we.

I played the level. I almost skipped it a few times because it was intense and disturbing, but I had too much respect for Infinity Ward not wanting to sanitize something that is a terrible reality. I played it to the end.

Was anyone surprised?

I mean everyone knew that scene would attract some controversy, it was only a matter of time.

I'm surprised Jack Thompson hasn't showed up yet... maybe his head exploded.

"/facepalm" more or less covers my reaction when reading this article.

There are two parties at blame here:
- Fox for doing these kinds of stories all the time
- and the rest of us who credit the network as a legit source of information by commenting on their stories and "issues".

I called this. It's going to escalate, just watch.

"SO uhh THEY BE TERRORESTS DAT BE TTAKEN ENAMEES, DEN uhh U BE AGENT AN EET BAD FUR AMURCA CUZ U BEE SPORTIN DA BAD GUYZ"

seriously why do people pay attention to fox news :(

We all knew this was coming, and we all know what happens next (nothing), so lets just move on with our lives already.

fox is about as far from fair and balanced as you can get, and any time somebody says its going to be fair i automatically assume they are lying to me.

EDIT:
all news programs are skewed tho, so i don't hold it against them too much

I'm American and honestly nothing about the end of the game bothers me. The reason for killing them makes sense within the story so I couldn't care less what nation they are from.

OP: Fox News and others like it continue to make me embarrassed to be a conservative.

Actually, Fox and Friends isn't news. Fox itself stated that it's news programming was only during a certain time segment, and everything else was opinion based entertainment. This is why I watch the Daily Show.

Don't want to ruin anything for anyone, so spoiler alert!

"We're going to have a fair and balance debate to find out." Come on Fox, at least be honest.

Well look on the bright side. At least Fox isn't trying to ban MW2.

Meanwhile IW laughs all the way to the bank, as none of the people upset by violent games were going to be playing this anyway, and the controversy generates interest.

i don't watch FOX news after I watched one of their male news anchors hit on one of their female anchors and even though she rebuffed him, he wouldn't let up. I wanted to see the news. If I wanted to see guys fail at picking up women, I would head over to my local bars and clubs.

It's fox news, the least credible source of anything ever. Anyone who still takes Fox seriously is either mentally challenged or doing it wrong.

That said, par to the course really... It's like that one time in Japan when a heavily disturbed guy killed, raped and cannibalized 4 children, and since he happened to like anime, all anime fans instantly became dangerous murdering perverts. Because why not really. Things like credibility, research, impartiality... they're bad, they get in the way of ratings!

2 things:

1. I don't believe video-games makes kids violent, i think naturally violent kids enjoy violent video-games.

2. As said in the article, I'm sick of hypocritical bullshit about how video-games are corrupting our kids, then it cuts to a commercial where it pretty much states "Buy our pills, women will be shaking to ride on your newly enhanced penis which we guarantee will grow up to 20 inches or more". It's absolute non-sensible bullshit that needs, not has, but NEEDS to stop.

That's pretty much how Fox "News" works, man. Fair and Balanced my ass.

'Common sense media'?

I smell irony.

"It's fox news, the least credible source of anything ever. Anyone who still takes Fox seriously is either mentally challenged or doing it wrong."

You are a moron. As someone who watches/reads/listens to FOX, CNN, MSNBC, WSJ etc. The only news outlet that is even remotely unbiased and credible is FOX. Are they 100% unbiased? Of course not, but there is no comparison between them and an organization like MSNBC. You are the type of dumbass who probably gets their news from a hack like John Stewart.

Beyond the idiocy of your statement. They had a fluff piece about an extremely violent video game that is not intended for children. Nothing they stated about the game was even slightly off base. Parents should be aware of the situations depicted in the game. It is very graphic in its depiction of death and violence. The fact of the matter is that there is a VERY graphic section of the game involving a massacre. No one should take that lightly, that was not the developers intent. To deride FOX because they ask the question, "is it too far" is simply ridiculous.

I bought the game on Tuesday at midnight. I stood in line with hundreds of people. I saw a whole hell of a lot of clueless parents standing around with 11 and 12 year old kids salivating at the prospects of playing the game.

To say that any criticism/concern of the things depicted in the game are unfounded attacks on a harmless medium is laughable.

I usually like to watch Fox News, or at least Glenn Beck. But *that* show has always been shit, and loves to jump at anything.

Did someone register to this site that actually thinks Fox News IS a reliable source of SLIGHT bias? Welcome to the escapist dude. You're in for a learning experience about Fox news.

No Youtube footage yet of this spectacle? Dammit, my formula for how long it takes a video clip to get to Youtube must be off then.
